On a side note I also wish that previous versions of Brutal Doom (before it got bloated imo) were more easily available. I really enjoy v17 and v18 over the latest ones.

PS: My favourite page of the Doom comic

Tried the new v22? A lot has been streamlined such as the arsenal and there's more options go customize to your tastes, I think it did a very good job at making the game feel less bloated and more cohesive.

Been playing Bastardos, a western WAD that made me miss LucasArt's Outlaws. Highly recommend it.
Bastardos oh boy, I think that is the only wad I actually came out with a bad taste on my mouth, good to know you are enjoying it, because I tried but it surprised me with bad aspects every new corner, bad new weapons, bad and inconsistent new enemies, very weird sprites that are probably p*rn used as an png.

On a positive note, I recommend to anyone who likes wads and western Cactus Creek, very underrated (and kinda unfinished to be honest) but very very good, the levels are big and have nice amout of details and little corners to explore, the enemies are literally from Outlaws with some new ones on a simmilar style, and the fact that is made for the gameplay mod Gunslinger only makes it better, the guns feel amazing and the pacing of the combat is fast and brutal, highly recommended it!

Honestly, I've lost motivation to even download the latest build of GZDoom (sup Le salty chicken) and BD.

I'm more into playing vanilla-esque stuff (or at least Boom-compatible/MBF) rather than what I (in my simple opinion) is a facsimile of what Doom is.

When a sourceport alters a game's fundamental mechanic so much can we consider that it's still the base game? GZDoom had so many features I woud consider that it's its own engine (thus why we see sold games on Steam using it) so that vanilla Doom is much more of a port/remaster than the original (like NightDive's Kex engine for their remasters or Half-Life if it had Quake's maps in a mod).

Brutal Doom changes the game heavilly as well to the point I call it almost like a fangame using Doom's assets and universe.

If people like that it's fine but media outlet acting as if a mod of Doom manages to do something impossible in the original engine is impressive they're just misunderstanding how this works. I'm much more impressed by a vanillla (well, limit-removing) wad like Auger Zenith rather than one using all of the fancier Decorate/Z-script that can make floor on floor and other advanced features like MyHouse.wad (which was a nice creepypasta but not as impressive as Lilith, that one using Zdoom's flaws on purpose).

Same when there was that pregnancy test display having Doom when it's just a visual output and not calculated by the device itself.

I finally got around to playing Eviternity about half a year back and I think it's dethroned BTSX E1 as my current favorite wad. The 6 episode format really keeps any one level theme from overstaying it's welcome, and Map 31 Imperator is probably one of my favorite Doom maps overall, largely owing to its killer midi.

I need to tackle a Megawad soon but I'm often discouraged from the idea of having to play through 30-32 levels.
It can definitely get a little sloggy if you're not feeling it. I tried getting into the Community Chest series but couldn't bring myself to finish the first two, they had really bad "Magnum Opus Syndrome" lol

As in trying to do even more each time?
Basically, in community Megawads, you sometimes end up with every person trying to make a big sprawling super level instead of making the mapset flow or escalate more naturally. You'll randomly get 1 or 2 hour long maps in weird spots like map 12 lol. CC1 is infamous for "Citadel at the Edge of Eternity", a map that comes out of nowhere that's like 6-8 hours long (the WR speedrun is around 3 hours lol)

I'm watching a video of it and oh God, over 1000 enemies. I would have kept something like that for a single map wad or a secret level.

And I thought that Go 2 It was long.

I played a Doom-based game that had comic book aesthetic. The main character had voice over in the cutscenes, and it was that kind of deep voice you hear from action movie protagonists. Also you could freeze people with an extinguisher.

I don't remember the name.

Sounds like Action Doom 2!

This thread and replies are a nine of gold for me <3 when I return to home I will start downloading the recommendations u guys posted

What sort of gameplay mods do you guys enjoy? I personally like Final Doomer+

It adds weaponsets based off of Final Doom and popular Megawads. It strikes a good balance between being something new and fancy but not straying too far from Doom.

I also like Nobody Told Me About ID

It basically serves as a "What if Doom were a Build Engine game instead" and makes the gameplay, aesthetic, and vibe closer to games like Duke 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior.

Final Doomer is indeed one the best and goes very creatively with its many classes, I particularly like the TNT one, turns Evilution into less of a slog due to the guns hitting harder (but I still like TNT more than most it seems).

For gameplay mods there's many I love in all kinds of styles.

High Noon Drifter is probably my all time favorite, Combined Arms and War Rooster are close second and third respectfully, and I really recommend giving a try to other mods by the authors of these three.

There's other mods that I like more for the theme, like Omerta you play as a 30s era thug from the italian mafia, has my favorite .38 revolver in all of gaming, Gamma Vektor has a really cool artstyle but is kinda too overpowered for my taste, Voyage Infernal has a very culty vibe to it.

Randomizers are always fun to mess around from time to time, Pandemonia is the top of the list for me, but others like Colourful Hell and Complex Doom are always there.

I’ll play dark ages on game pass.

I really need to do Heretic, Hexen (maybe Strife too) but first I want to play FreeDoom Phase 1&2 just to see how it is.
Oh I absolutely recommend playing through both phases of Freedoom. They're pretty fun. I only don't really like Double Impact (the 4th episode of Phase 1) and how some stages in Phase 2 can get pretty large and long, leading me to get lost. I get lost easily.

The only thing that made me not attracted by Freedoom was simply the look of enemies and the whole "bootleg" feel of the iwads but I'm still interested in the level layout.

Edit: this reminds me to update my Sourceports and do some Megawads like Jenesis.
