DOOM THREAD

YES FOUND THE THREAD! Wait... is it a Heretic and Hexen safe doom thread? xd

I loved Quest for the Crystal Skulls for Heretic not long ago and I've also played through some very very excellently good Hexen wads like Realms of Cronos! Can't get enough of sweet 2.5D fantasy first person hacking&slashing&shooting

Oh! Are you a fellow Heretic enjoyer? Nice! It was one of my first FPS games, and I thought it was really awesome.

ye tysm I kinda dreamed about being a doom-tuber for a good 15min lmfao

Should we set up like... a Doom server? Maybe Megaman 8 bit deathmatch and/or vanilla Doom as some sort of community goal? It's super doable, Doom servers aren't very resource intensive.
that'll be rad a f. Maybe a crispy doom deathmatch to start very vanilla? Idk what the current best multiplayer sourceport is tho :P I would host myself but my ISP sucks ass xd

more people should try doom mods thy can be so fun one of my favorites is reelism an the golden souls series they are pretty whole diffrent uniqque games by this point lol

Hey, does anyone here have anything good to say about Doom Eternal? I liked Doom 2016, but I heard the sequel was just more of the same, so I never felt like I needed to play it. Is the console version worth a buy if I can get it on sale?
It's Good, it's DOOM, i really enjoyed it myself.

I wasn't able to get Doom Eternal until like 8 months after launch. It's one of my all time favorites. The gameplay loop is so satisfying once you get into it. I would say it's leagues above 2016, although I love that game too. The gameplay is almost like chess, you have your smaller demons that run around and try to catch you off guard, your bigger demons like the Caco or Pinky that keep you on your toes but aren't too difficult, your super demons like the Cyberdemon (he's a regular enemy in that one) or the Marauder that force you to adapt to whats happening while keeping in mind the rest of the playing field, they can make or break a run, and the Bosses that are some of the best in the genre. The game is all about using your arsenal to your advantage, it isn't like Classic Doom where say the Super Shotty replaces the regular one, every weapon has it's uses and weaknesses. I can't speak for console as when I played I played on an old DVR Xbox One and it was blurry and tough to control. I played through it like 18 times on PC though. I still every once in a while try to go back and run it through on Ultra Nightmare. Farthest I've got there is level 6 before dying. The game is hard but rewarding once you figure out the loop.

Doom is one of my favorite franchises. I love every game, even Doom 3. I think 3 gets a lot of unnecessary hate because of the style, but I feel like even 1, 2, and 64 had it's fair share of slow moments. Really excited for The Dark Ages, I gotta try to get the collector's edition of that because I couldn't get the one for Eternal. I think 1 and 2 are still the kings because of the mod community, but Eternal isn't far from those two for me because of how fun the gameplay loop is.

I have a vague memory of some masterpost of the 3 most important ones from my previous life as a doomworld lurker. I think it said Odamex was the best vanilla-friendly / boom-compatible one and Zandronum (previously Skulltag) was the best one based on Zdoom. It also mentioned ZDaemon but I don't know what that one's about.

yeah zandronum with foomseeker is still the main one

I need to replay Odamex. I haven't played much after Decino's Stress Test.

I prefer vanilla personally.

Zandronum is my go to.

I don't know how much of an unpopular opinion this is but I think that Doom 64 is one of the best Doom games.
It has a really cool atmosphere, it feels unlike any other game in the series, well maybe except Doom 3.
Of course I am mostly talking about the PC port, I don't think it's too fun to play on console.
Def not unpopular. DOOM 64 is magnificent in all regards and I think that's consensus even though most prefer DOOM 2. Actually my favorite DOOM game of all time. The map puzzles feel so much more alive, the atmosphere is drenched in fear, the enemy designs are really nicely redone. No Archvile, thank God for that.

Why do I prefer DOOM 64? Well, in honesty, I can't fucking stand the Archvile even though you sparingly see him. Some of the more experimental maps I just couldn't stand like Downtown. Tricks and Traps was... eh. With all due respect to Sandy Petersen and I appreciate he experimented with map structures frankly but it really just... yeah.

DOOM is one of the few franchises that's been with me throughout nearly my entire life. From playing it on DOSBox when I was 8 to ZDoom at 14 and now I use Crispy Doom if on PC.

I dont recall the last WAD I played either but I enjoyed Equinox enough.

It set a standard for FPS games early on; to me everything after must measure up to it. A masterpiece of a series in quite literally every single way in my honest opinion.

DOOM 3 and the newer DOOM games don't appeal much to me frankly. Especially the newer "I'M SUCH A BADASS MURDERING DEMONS I'M FUCKING AWESOME" tryhard gory shit. DOOM was never about that to me. It's the mix of so many things. The satisfaction of solving a puzzle, the anxiety of being a lone Marine walking through dark corridors where enemies can easily fuck you up, and the joy of tearing through them with buckshot.

To me it feels like new DOOM will only really appeal to those who would enjoy Brutal Doom (in fact I like calling most shooters in new DOOM's style "Markshooters"). DOOM was never a power fantasy to me at all.

Usually the consensus is that Doom 1 is the best over 2.

It's quite a rare take but I cannot disagree with it at all.

While I love games that are made for unwinding after a long day of work I also find that Doom 2016/Eternal is mostly what the general public thought what Doom was about.

Doom 1 had some areas that weren't just about action and it was also inspired by the first Alien movie which was more horror than action.

I'm also one of those that think that the Doomguy being just a marine that managed to survive Hell and back twice is much more badass than a chosen demigod that is already powerful.

Yo lets talk about WADs, what are your favorites?
my absolute favorite custom WAD of all time, is Auger;Zenith. Cyberpunk themed, vanilla compatible Doom goodness, with extremely creative stages, good combat and BANGIN' midi soundtracks.

Top tier wad. I love how vanilla it still is in most aspects.

Yeah I think that GZDoom's Decorate and Zscript are a bit cheating.

Also try Amorphous Euphoria from the same guys.

PS: If you got any vanilla/Boom compatible megawads I'm all ears.

I also prefer playing wads on vanilla-like sourceports over ZDoom tech. Yeah, those mods are cool, but the wads were designed and planned for vanilla mechanics and whatever other modifications they themselves baked into the wad.

Dang, vanilla compatible... I made one such post looking through most of my downloaded wads a while ago in the Fediverse, let me try to find that one again... have this nice Halloween video by the nice Matt Eldrydge while I look for that damn post.

I sometimes play DOOM deathmatch via Doom Explorer online, it's quite fun and exhilarating! Super fast-paced like Quake. As for wads/megawads, I recently played this small wad called Phobos by Roger Ritenour (1998) which wasn't really good, it was considered impressive for it's time visually (I guess by 98' standards sure?) but it looks kinda drab, plus the enemy placement is random and unfun. There is another one he made called Earth, but I sadly don't think I'm too impressed to check it out.

Also, as for some really good wads, Scythe was really great! Challenging, mostly short and sweet, very difficult by the end as it becomes a full blown slaughter wad. Deus Vult by Huy Pham was also really cool, I've played it a couple of times and it's very huge. There's a lot of strategy involved which I like. I've yet to check out the sequel, which I should do soon. The most recent one I played was the Japanese Community Project megawad which is pretty interesting! Very varied between ideas, some slaughter, some puzzle, it's neat. I haven't finished it yet. It's amazing how widespread DOOM is all over the world. I'm no expert on DOOM, but I like checking out DOOMworld and seeing what wads interest me. I should probably check out more, there's probably many gems out there!

P.S: For the sourceports I usually use either Crispy/Chocolate DOOM or GZDOOM.

This is one of the reasons why Brutal Doom cannot replace the original game, the maps are not made with the newer balance in mind.

Same with many other gameplay mod so that's why I prefer bigger and more expanded maps for these.

Thanks. I think there should be a proper tag for non-Decorate wads (maybe 1994 wads? It's generally a pejorative term for newbies in mapping).

On another note: master levels for Doom II in the Doom 1+2 collection was made as a single wad, I didn't dislike it but it made the balance different.

Oh yeah, worth noting also about the new Doom1+2 collection and it's mod browser, a friend of mine called ElfAlchemist has been curating several wads uploaded there, particularly his own version of a "Complete" Master Levels pack, adding in other levels from each of the creators that contextualize the previously included maps with more stuff. Definitely recommend checking that one out.

Now, I didn't find my other post about "vanilla" wads, so I'll just scroll through my doom explorer and list off any good ones I remember: BringBackThe90s, Perdition's Gate, Abscission, Liminal Doom, Alien Vendetta, Hellbound, Infinity-Eternity-Serenity, The Darkening, Anomaly Report, the various Doom the way id did, Into Sandy's Cities, Machete, Nostalgia, Requiem, Reverie, REvolution, Speed of Doom, Deathless, Rylayeh, Sunder and Sunlust, UAC Ultra, Whitemare....
and last but not least, Freedoom. I quite like it.

Now, I'll be honest, I don't usually go for vanilla/boom compat. I usually like going for the more advanced stuff like MBF21, I really like the advancements in capability of the engine, and my favorite sourceport is Woof and DSDA-Doom.

DSDA replaced PrBoom+, I love having it next to Crispy Doom (Chocolate when I'm feeling courageous).

You should play Dimensions.
