DOOM THREAD

Have you considered exploring the Doom Wad scene? There's a ton of high quality stuff like Ancient Aliens, Back to Saturn X, and Eviternity 1 and 2 that provide a higher challenge, or go for Sunlust or Sunder if you really wanna test yourself.
Sunlust? I've seen that one before. Decino played it! Imma have to look at it!

Do you consider me a Noob for doing this or should I stop playing DOOM 2 for a while and let my skill rust a bit?
Never quit a game just because you feel, somehow, obligated to do so.

That being said, I wish I had your abilities, lmao. Honestly, I still need to take some time to test out a few of the most popular Doom WADs, but I feel it's necessary to mention the famous MyHouse.WAD video that went viral a couple of years ago.

Honestly, I felt compelled to test that out, just given the sheer quality of the video's script alone. What a masterpiece.

Probably a silly question, but have you tried Final DOOM? Both wads, Plutonia and Eviternity, are excellent in their own ways (imo). I think you'd appreciate Plutonia's difficulty - It's a cut above what DOOM II offers. Some people don't like Eviternity because its levels are sparse and sometimes quite unintuitive, but I appreciated them alot.

In terms of custom mods, I'd also strongly recommend No End in Sight, and echo Ranmyakulchi's recommendations, especially Ancient Aliens. ?

If you got to that point, you should star playing wads by the community, normally those are more challeging that the base game with the same quality or even more. You can spend your whole life just playing community content.

My apologies, but do you mean TNT Evilution as the other half to Plutonia?

I definitely meant TNT Evilution yep. Wow I can't believe I named the wrong wad twice haha. Yes TNT Evilution, Plutonia and the Master Levels comprise Final DOOM, and even though TNT Evilution has its nay-sayers I reckon it's still well worth trying.

No worries mate! And i think you're right, TNT Evilution is a good time, and the fan sequels like TNT Revilution are pretty great too!

Yes, These ones for sure. Straight heat. also try out some slaughter maps like Okuplok. Those are a real challenge.

Lately i've grown quite bored of Doom 2's base game difficulty. I feel as if it has become far too easy. But it's ridiculous because the entire time i've played Doom 2 it was always on Ultra-Violence. So yesterday. I went through The Slade3 editor and modified the ZDOOM.pk3 file which basically houses the sprites and such. And I modified the Health stats of both the Player character and the Demons. Although the Demons i've modified to be higher [Cyberdemon now has 5000 HP rather than the 4000 HP as it did before] so that it offers more of a challenge. I wanna know your thoughts on this. Do you consider me a Noob for doing this or should I stop playing DOOM 2 for a while and let my skill rust a bit?

There's nothing wrong with that. Definitely try Sunlust, though

I think this would've been great to have the PC or retro but it's nice.

Despite the feelings I like Hell on Earth more than Doom I.

I really need to do Heretic, Hexen (maybe Strife too) but first I want to play FreeDoom Phase 1&2 just to see how it is.

Oh I absolutely recommend playing through both phases of Freedoom. They're pretty fun. I only don't really like Double Impact (the 4th episode of Phase 1) and how some stages in Phase 2 can get pretty large and long, leading me to get lost. I get lost easily.

The only thing that made me not attracted by Freedoom was simply the look of enemies and the whole "bootleg" feel of the iwads but I'm still interested in the level layout.

Edit: this reminds me to update my Sourceports and do some Megawads like Jenesis.

Well, if I had a beefier PC, I'd play The Dark Ages, which is coming soon. But I'll watch an Ultra Nightmare playthrough instead.
It's cool that we'll be able to control mechs and ride a dragon, but I'm worried these sections will overstay their welcome.

I love that there's still a really dedicated community of people making level packs and mods for DOOM and DOOM 2. I actually follow the Doomerboards community packs since they always release a big one for Christmas and I've made it a tradition to play one with friends in co-op now.

I LOVE this one. It's maybe my favorite of them all still and I've gone through it like three times.

Also you gotta get SELACO

It's made with GZDoom. This is technically a massive Doom mod!

i really enjoyed my last foray into gzdoom with VoxelDoom https://www.moddb.com/mods/doom-voxel-project

pure blasphemy for oldskool doom enthusiasts, but for some reason just feels right to me. i've always had a mild like, annoyance is putting it too strongly, ESPECIALLY when there is vertical freemouse movement, when you see the sprites kinda squish down a little to emulate perspective. that has always looked wrong to me and VoxelDoom fixes that feeling completely for me

played a tiny bit of the kex Doom 1 + 2 port, its really quite good preconfigured out the box, very little adjustments needed and lots of extra goodies etc. a very polished package, as it should be in current year for a doom release really. i think i still mildly prefer my experience with gzdoom and open modding it as a whole, but for something that essentially 'just works' the kex Doom 1 + 2 is perfectly acceptable imo.

I'll be that annoying purist Doom fan but GZDoom is its own engine and you don't need to own Doom to be able to run it therefore I'd consider it more like a GZDoom game (like how Ion Maiden/Fury is a Build Engine game not a Duke3D mod).

Ashes 2063 and its sequel and prequel are everything I could want in a post-apoc WAD (well, mostly missing energy weapons >_>), and all three are even in standalone format now. 😎
Indeed Ashes was AMAZING, right from the start I was hooked. To think someone can make stuff that quality... simply amazing, Vostyok did an amazing work ::biggrin

Sometimes I ask myself how people can make mods and their own fully fledged games by themselves, as someone who has tried to do both things and actively progresses on it... It's one hell of a challenge, one they somehow have mastered.

I forgot to say that I've finished the first Episode of FreeDoom: Outpost Outbreak.

It was a bit boring in the first levels but I find the latest two quite interesting. It still has that bootleg feel but ultimately the Freedoom monsters scares me a bit more than Doom's.
