What's a clone you enjoy more than the game it's copying?

Mmmm I really loved Dante Inferno over God of War.

In fact, I never finished a single God of War, tho I owned the collectors edition of Omega (it was a gift)

You can put me in too for Dante's Inferno as well. I am barely half way through the game and got to finish it.

Shadows of the Damned I find much more satisfying and a better game than Resident Evil 4.

Streets of Rage is a clone of Final Fight, and all of the games are better than the arcade game or the sequels on SNES. Rushing Beat Ran and Rushing Beat Shura are better than Final Fight 2 and Final Fight 3 respectively.

7th Dragon series >>> Sekaiju no Meikyuu/Etrian Odyssey series
Bare Knuckle series >>> Final Fight series
Star Ocean series >>> Tales series
Garou Densetsu/Fatal Fury series >>> Street Fighter series
Toukiden series > God Eater series >>> Monster Hunter series
Nioh series > Dark Souls series
Gunvolt series >>> Rockman/Megaman series
Metal Wolf Chaos series >>> Armored Core series
Dead or Alive series >>> Tekken series >>> Virtua Fighter series
Godslayer/Crystalis >>> The Legend of Zelda (Famicom/NES)
Cool Cool Toon >>> PaRappa the Rapper
Athena >>> Makaimura/Ghouls & Ghost series
Final Fantasy series >>> Dragon Quest series

On the top of my head

Oneechanbara Z2: Chaos is pretty much the Devil May Cry 4 of the franchise (even though it is the 6th mainline entry), and I actually love it more than DMC4 or 4SE. Granted, the game itself is technically a mission pack sequel to Z1, but has more than plenty of new assets and levels to make up for it. I am not gonna lie, I enjoy the pacing of Z2 more than Bayonetta 1. Both Z titles have heavy Bayonetta influences as well from the way it score system works.

I like Chasm: The Rift a whole lot better than Quake.

I enjoyed Shaolin Monks a thousand times more than God of War saga.

If being a soulslike means being a clone, then Black Myth: Wukong is much more enjoyable to me than any of From's games.

Black Myth is not a Souls-style game. The only thing those two have related to each other are the camera angles, and even, that is not unique to either. As it's been the same standard 3rd person rotating camera since the 6th generation days.

Tbf, they both also share a stamina system, the ability to retrieve resources upon death, tough bosses, levelling systems, optional areas, obscure NPC side quests etc. I think Soulslike is a nice, broad catch-all term which fits Black Myth.

Stuff like that existed before Souls games even became thing. Albeit, not all in the same game, but still. Also, it is mostly superficial comparisons. The devs and on those who really got deep into the game's mechanics have proof it is not a straight up Souls games. Some influences? Yes, but Wukong clearly goes into its own direction and clearly an action game overall.

A problem I noticed since around 2022-2023 is how quickly people are to label things a Souls-like/clone/whatever without much evidence or constantly assume, because the 3rd person rotating camera angle. Which again, it is not unique to anything to what the series, nor FromSoftware did. People were either hoping games like Onimusha: Way of the Sword or Phantom Blade 0 to be Souls style games, either for the sake of clout or clicks. Then some threw a fit or were "disappointed" they got it wrong when both respective developers set the record straight immediately.

I guess it's like when every FPS game was a DOOM-clone for a while. They're distinct enough to be their own things, but I do see some overlap between them. I wonder if the next Black Myth title will be a big departure from the first.

Demon's Souls back when it was new wasn't basically an Action RPG?

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand the question.
I mean why the term "souls-like" is a think when the first Souls game was already an action-RPG?

Maybe it's a new subgenre that got made and that the term was coined when other also got inspired by it.

I mean I suppose you just use Action-RPG as an even wider net term yeah. I think it's quite an accomplishment for any game to become widely considered a pioneer of a genre/category of game. Not many games can make that claim...off the top of my head I can only think of Rogue, DOOM, Demon's Souls...though there are probably others.

Sea of Stars is by far my favorite Crono Trigger "Sequel"

The TakeOver and The TakeOver 2 (when it comes out this September) I do enjoy more than Bare Knuckle III/Streets of Rage 3.
