What's a clone you enjoy more than the game it's copying?

Ms. Pac-Man is the one for me, if it counts as a clone.
Her speed-up feature gives the game higher spirit.
Though strangely, the game does not behave as intended when the controller bears six buttons... at least, within Genesis realms.
I think if you turn your console on while holding "Mode" it sets your controller to 3 button mode.

Serious Sam > Duke Nukem. Which is ironic, as he did start off as a Duke parody in his very first game.

Yes and no... and yes.

I prefer Sam's humour over the greasier Duke one yet I also think that Duke 3D had a better level design because Serious Sam is more like an arena shooter than a proper retro FPS ; you'd spend more time backrunning while shooting at enemies than finding keys in a maze like level.

The best would've been having a Serious Sam game with a more Doom 2016-like level design (or Quake in the best case) but I haven't done 3 nor 4 so far.

I know the difference. I just have a bigger preference for Serious Sam and the level designs for most games. I didn't like 3BFE at all.

Play Shadow Warrior 3.

haven't done 3 nor 4 so far.
Skip Serious Sam 3. It plays too much like a generic military shooter for the first half of the game. It was supposed to be some unnamed military shooter at one point that copied COD. But the deal didn't go through.

Play Serious Sam 4, and it's stand alone expansion, Siberia Mayhem. 4 especially got updates a year after it launched and it plays a whole lot better.

I shall try the first two at some point.

So the Duke 4ever syndrome?

I guess like Postal the third is the skippable entry.

I'll give it another chance but the level design should get some complexity.

The first game of the reboot trilogy is just okay. So many better throwback, first person shooter games have come out since then. The second game is love it or hate it territory. I didn't like it personally, and I didn't like the shooter looter aspects at all. The writings seem to be a step down, but that's another case of your mileage may vary. I would recommend just watching a playthrough if you're not sure.

Both 4 and Siberian do try for a bit more complexities to better effects compared to 3, but you're still gonna be in large arenas. Siberian does mix it up the best of all the games, if you are looking for a reference.

Back when I was still going to college, our game room in the common area had a Pac-Man cocktail table. On it was an incredibly sped up version of Pac-Man, played that shit for hours and it gave me an incredible high that only Pac-Man Championship Edition can match

As good as both of those were, Ms. Pac-Man is far better

I can't say it's a better game, but Pac Guy is a low low budget unauthorized spin off of Pac Man and it was pretty awesome when I was a kid. Being able to pick up a power pellet and use it as a projectile to permanently knock out an enemy from the level is a fun twist.

Some of my favorite Knock-Offs were the ones done by CHAMP games for PC. They had a wealth of arcade game clones that had enhancements that really made them shine

Most of the Sonic All Star Racing games I find better/more entertaining than Mario Kart.

Evil Within 2 I prefer over most Resident Evil titles. The only exceptions are really Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Ghost Rider video game to original God of War. While GOW was a slog to get through with same encounters over and over for 6 to 8 hours. Ghost Rider was a short and sweet game that knew what it did well and didnt bothered to make it drag. Game is also filled with bosses (9 or 10 I think) for a 3 hour game compared to GOWs only 3 ok at best ones. Bosses are simple but fun to fight, the motorcyle fights are especially exciting and cool. But it lacks heavly in the enviroment and story which are I think GOWs two of the strongest points. I played the PSP version on an actual PSP since I like handheld gaming more so I might have a bias but I overall enjoyed the GR much more than original God of War. Also Blade is so much fun to play he feels a lot like Dante from DMC1 with faster combos.

just got this game Astalon: Tears of the Earth.
it is kind of a clone of ALL those old platform adventure
NES games we all know and love.
Is it a "modern retro" game or a "retro modern" game?
Who knows, Who cares it kicks-ass, just play it.

Etrian odyssey is meant to be a Wizardry "Clone", more specifically a spiritual succesor, guess which series is the one i have poured more hours into
I'd even dare to say that it does SMT better than SMT currently.

Speaking of GoW, I prefer Evil West over the Norse Duology. I like those games too, but Evil West has much more satisfying, arcadey, combat. When talking about Greek era, I always preferred No More Heroes and MadWorld over any of the Greek GoWs.

Also chiming in to say I like Dragon Quest Builders better than Minecraft. I generally need some kind of goal to work towards, Minecraft is too directionless for me, too much of a blank slate. DQB2 especially got me hooked enough to actually want to build things on my own just for the sake of it.
Same. Find it more fun than Minecraft. All DQB2 is missing is a good modding community.

Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 are more so spiritual successors, mainly to Far Cry 1 and Instincts, but I find both much more engaging than any of the Far Cry games. These games are fun, stealth, FPS games with open-ended level design. Better than just another open world in some part of the world with an over hyped villain.

Not really a clone, but I like the My Time At series more than the newer Story of Seasons and Rune Factory games. Love the weird optimistic post-post-apocalyptic world it takes place in. The series is often compared to SoS and Rune Factory.

saints row the third - just the right amount of over the top open world action
