World has to be THE best 2D Mario game. 3 is really good, but World expands on the ideas from it so well. The music is great, the fluidity of the gameplay is awesome, the graphics are pretty decent for being the first game on the system. I could go on.

But I think what puts World up above 3 is how easily people picked the game apart. I mean, thinking about 3 for a second, it's an NES game, and while ROM Hacking for the game is possible, I feel like World being a more advanced SNES game is why people tend to do hacks for that instead. There's more you can do with it. And the modding tools such as Lunar Magic have been around for almost 25 years now.

Honestly though? I think Mario stopped being interesting for me after the Wii, and really Nintendo in general. There's a really noticable drop off in quality once the Wii U hit imo. And none of the really good games afterwards are Mario titles except for maybe Odyssey and 3D World. I did like Wonder though.
Imo new super mario bros ds is probably the best 2d Mario game (unless wario games are included then it's wario land 4)

I don't like either because I actually haven't liked a single Mario game
::angrygenjin HOW DARE YO-

since the very first one.

I just liked how straightforward and simple the original one was, which was something largely forgotten in later entries.

Both are great, but I prefer 3. It's challenging and has a lot variety with its power-ups and level themes.

Although I played a lot of World, including hundreds of romhacks, 3 has always been a fairly superior game to me. Even back when I was a kid I felt that SMW was kind of a downgrade, less power-ups, no tank and airship levels, no card games and weird secrets like the flute, less level themes and easier difficulty, way less satanic subliminal messages, etc. And yet its still a solid 8 for me.

Super Mario World because it was the first videogame I ever owned. Also Yoshi was one of my favorite characters growing up. As great as Mario 3 is, it still can't compete with that kind of nostalgia.

I'm going with WORLD. I played both of these games, but interestingly their GBA remakes/ports. I enjoyed World due to it being easier to progress through. 3 I found it to be hard at times which isn't bad, it gives levels a challenge, but after beating both games I just go back to WORLD more than 3. WORLD is simply comfortable to play through compared to 3 in my opinion. I do miss the power ups from 3 though, or the better themes of each world.

I remember Mario 3 more than Mario World because of the power ups and the music, while I mostly remember Mario World because of its graphics which are still crazy good for the time, the introduction of Yoshi which became a staple in the series (Sacrifice him for extra boost jump was a hilarious strategy at the time) and the insane romhacking scene that surfaced from it. Also Mario Combat and Super Mario Bros Z used stuff from Mario World, so Mario World inspired more fan creations.

So I say they are mostly even, I can't decide one over the other, I like Mario 3 more but objectively both are the same quality.

this is tough! the power ups in 3 are so charming! but the ost and overall sound design in world is magical! i think if i had to choose, probably world.::peacemario

This is the “content VS polish” debate. Both of these games are goated, but I think World is a bit more refined. I keep thinking, when going back, that Mario 3 could have been even better if it was more focused on speed using the P system.

Just as always, it's a personal choice and I respect anyone's choice, but I have my own reasons to have a clear winner here. And for me that's an easy pick... Super Mario Bros 3 was the real best among them two.
I find it comprehensive to new retro-players to go to SMW, but I started playing videogames with a NES instead of a SNES. Think about the slight quality differences between SMB3 and SMW and now do the same with SMB3 and SMB2 USA or SMB The Lost Levels... SMB3 was the real mind-blowing game at its time, so mind-blowing that SMW did not really surprised anyone that played SMB3 before. It's something similar to Zelda BOTW and Zelda TOTK... TOTK expanded and polished it all from BOTW, but BOTW is considered the real best Zelda game of all time.
Big questions apart, I hate Mario's desing from SMW when the cap turns up when jumping, almost falling from his head (exactly the same with Super Mario Wonder). Please Nintendo, fix Mario's cap for the sake of god... :cautious:
Besides that, when talking about levels designed in Super Mario Maker 2 with the SMB3 engine, I find them much prettier than the ones done with the SMW engine.
And of course there is one of the best remakes of all time in the contest, which is Super Mario All Stars. The amazing re-work done with this quadrilogy is a piece of history of the pixel art. I'd still pick SMB3 from All Stars over SMW.
Maximum respect to SMW (A.K.A. Super Mario Bros 4 in Japan), 4th place in my list of best 2D Mario retro-games, but that's my humble opinion.

Mario world, it's birthed some of the best romhacks ever made. The vanilla game itself is fun and challenging.

Honestly if a mad lad could actually mix the best of both:

SMB3 but you can go back to the previous levels if you want to, having all powerups from both games, having the possibility to have a Luigi with his own control style (like SMB2 The Lost Levels), enhanced graphics (because SMW, being an early title, was simpler compared to the more complex late NES SMB3), Yoshi included and many other QoL improvements from both.

3 feels more like the culmination of years of hard work creating and fine tuning the platformer genre. I like World a lot too, but it feels more like it was made purely as a reason to get people to buy a new console (didn't it come out like only a year or two after 3?)

Maybe?

The Yoshi franchise is in a weird situation where it's in the Mario universe yet is its own franchise.
Even though, the Yoshi games carried OST wise and gameplay wise, delivering a solid Super Mario World sequel and cool mechanics, but I never got around the wool story game for N64.

I dont think we will ever get a new yoshi game like the original one on the SNES since it seems like nintendo thought the character fits way better for a preschool audience and therefore cannot make more complicated levels and mechanics

Weren't there a DS sequel?
