Have you ever tried Mario & Luigi?
My baby…

Mario and Luigi hurts. It’s the formative version of the Mushroom Kingdom’s characters for me, being the version of the Mario world I use as the basis in my head. I loved BIS and Dream Team, but then… Paper Jam.

I heard many mixed things, a lot of negative things, on Brothership, but I’ve been meaning to get around to it. I WANT to love that game so badly. I miss Mario and Luigi. I also want to play the games I missed (Superstar Saga and Partners in Time) at some point! I watched a playthrough of Partners in Time, but that’s not the same thing as playing it.

Bro, you're missing out!
I'd recommend starting with Superstar Saga since Partners in time features a returning character from that game.

I have to play Newer Super Mario Bros but first I want to redo the Super Princess Peach and original NSMB.

Whenever I feel like I need a comfort game, I always run to Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64, and one of the Mario Karts. But I’m always eager to try games I never have before!

Currently playing Super Paper Mario on Wii! Slowly, but it’s a fun game! Loaned to me by my beloved partner~

I’ve also been thinking of doing a more modern playthrough of Super Mario Sunshine. I beat the game, but over a period of YEARS and that was when I was a kid. I’ve also been wanting to play NSMB Wii, but it’s so squished on my CRT! Niche collector problems, I’m sure.
I've been thinking of replaying Sunshine and NSMB Wii someday.

…so… uh… we all know Fawful is in Partners in Time, right?

That’s literally the one thing I knew about that game for years was his one cutscene. People are VERY obsessed with Fawful. Not that I can blame them because he’s so good, but people kind of act like he’s all that Mario and Luigi is, when he’s moreso just the most developed new character from the sub-series.

I have horrible, haunting memories of playing NSMB Wii with my friend and his little brother. He would run ahead like an jerk, trying to make his little brother so frustrated that he would give up and go away, but the six year old just kept playing, dying, crying, and being mad. I was trapped in the middle, because I agreed the brother was bad at the game, but I didn’t want to see him fail and be upset! So I just kept trying to help the little brother out as my friend just kept jetting ahead.

Don’t be too upset. My friend was 15 at the time, I was 14, and the kid was 6. That kid is now 13 and is going through his “edgy teenage suburban white boy phase”. I pray for his soul that he doesn’t do anything TOO cringeworthy that he regrets later when he grows up.

My friend is now an accountant. And has a wife. He still runs ahead in NSMB Wii. Pain.

NSMB Wii's biggest issue is how skill disparity makes it harder to play and how you can still throw people in the void.

Also when you have to balance a fifteen year old and a six year old fighting… when you’re 14.

That's why I mostly spent my time solo-ing the game but then you notice that the level design is too wide for SP play.

I loved 3D World. It feels so meaty and ”complete”.

I didn’t feel that for the original release, but Bowser’s Fury does feel that. It’s probably the most and best Mario for your buck on Switch!

In my opinion, it’s what that original release should have been, just from the quality of life updates to the game system alone. Not even accounting for the whole extra campaign you get. Good game they made right here!

On Wii U, my main Mario game was Mario Maker. Online only game, I know, but it was a total hoot back when it was active, and everything about the package just felt so right.

I appreciated 3D Land.

3D Land and 3D World felt much better than the NSMB games on both consoles imo.
Don’t think you’ll get much pushback for that.
I am the poor, young fool who actually has a nostalgia bias for NSMBU. The original Wii U release. It was the first Mario game I really got into and kickstarted my massive fandom of the series. I was around 10 or so.

The game is also not very exciting. Like, straight up. Possibly one of the most “yup. That sure is a Mario” games of all time.

my favorite super mario world since i did play it alot with my brother and sister

super mario bros 2 is really great since you can play as different character and i like that its different from the other mario nes and snes games

mario is a really old favorit game i am not the biggest mario fan but i like the fact that the game has survive and evolve with each new game consol

for me mario is one of the immortal games that do get old but never dies

I think NSMB U is better appreciated by someone who hasn't touched DS nor Wii before.

I am just a bit sad that NSMB 2 on the 3DS didn't try more than the money gimmick because it just felt yet another NSMB Wii type of game with the same OST while Super Mario Bros USA, 3 and World all had unique soundtracks.

I also dislike how NSMB was retroactively seen as not good (especially the DS and Wii entries) because of that staleness when they're still good games.

It’s a sad fate indeed. They’re well designed on a gameplay front, but I’ll be first to say that PRESENTATION MATTERS. It matters a lot, especially when you can’t immediately demo something. I have more issues with the gameplay of Wonder than the latter two NSMB games, but I will always say Wonder is better because it feels like there is a soul there.

NSMB U and 2 feel like “get your foot in the door” projects, which it turns out is partially true. Also, shoutouts to Coin Rush. I think that would have been a better system to design NSMB 2 around, but it just wasn’t meant to be…

Great DLC though! It’s still a very robust mode.

Personally I think gameplay should matter the most or else it'd be style over substance.

Wonders is great because of variety but it's basically New Super Mario Bros. 5 to me (or 6 if Super Luigi U counts as a separate title).

With the money gimmick they should've created a "Super Wario Bros." with Wario and Waluigi but that's just me.

I'll share that video again as my main NSMB DS propaganda:

And I love the Super Mario 64 engine being used for a side scroller (and a Karting game as I think MK DS uses that engine).

PS: I wish I had access to the actual beta which looked radically different.

I don’t know if it was the “64 engine” as much as it was the original dev tools for the DS. But, I agree, I love how the DS game looks. It’s even cooler to see beta footage still have moves intact from 64 DS!

Nintendo in general dropped the ball with exploring the options for Wario platformers. Not sure why. They sold well. Not amazing, but whatever.

The handhelds got great platformers for Wario, DK, and even a couple of the not talked about Yoshi games! It’s a shame that most Nintendo fans, let alone gaming fans, dismiss many of these games. DK King of Swing is amazingly fun! So is Wario Land as a series! And Yoshi’s Touch and Go is a fun, older DS title.

Oh? You mean that the Super Mario 64 DS engine was probably the default engine used by Nintendo's in-house devs? Kinda like the Source Engine having Half-Life² as its default template. I wish NSMB kept 3D Mario movements like how Donkey Kong '94 on the GB had the backflip and triple jump that Mario 64 would reuse later.

Because it didn't sell well? I dunno but Wario Land 4 wasn't that big of a game sadly.

I find it interesting and funny that Donkey Kong had DKC1 for three separate gens of handhelds with DK Land 1, DKC GBC and DKC Advance. And yeah, platformers worked surprisingly well on handhelds.

If you want to, you can count 3DS and Switch for DKC1.
Wild.

Mario 1 on the NES was one of the first games I ever played. I was... not very good at it, mainly because I was... like, 1 and a half years old? But I love 1, 2 (US, not so much 2J), 3, World, Yoshi's Island, 64, Sunshine I'm pretty mixed on, Galaxy 1, 3D Land and World, GB Land 1 and 2 (Do I count Land 3 even though it's the first Wario Land?), DK '94, Paper Mario (N64, TTYD, and Super), Mario and Luigi (GBA, PiT, and BiS), the Tennis and Golf games, even Strikers is a pretty fun time. Yeah, Mario is one of those franchises I can't remember not being around.

Why was Mario different in the first release? But now changed to red and blue? Just curious.

I’m watching the new Summoning Salt video and I’m seriously so nostalgic for Super Mario 64. It’s THE nostalgia game for me. I want to fire that game up again but I have schoolwork and sleep to do…

I liked his The Human Limit video.

Weirdly enough, I have nostalgia for Mario 64, I played it during childhood yet I still haven't had that "spark".

Super Mario Bros 2 has really climbed up the ranks of my favorite Mario games the last few years.
USA or Lost Levels?
