Myrient is closing March 31, 2026

I agree, but my gov tried last year to block me out torrent sites. I mean, these sites are under attack for a while.
VPNs are almost essential these days. Easiest way to avoid any regional regulations, especially when it comes to torrents. Used torrents for years without a VPN but would not risk it now.

Realistically, how would a small website fight against this?
1a. Throttle VPN download speeds to KB/s unless they sign up and cough up money.
1b. Wouldn't stop someone from downloading dozens of games at once, which still adds up if many people are doing this.
2a. Go back to torrenting only.
2b. Seeding requires port-forwarding (to the best of my knowledge,) and many reputable VPN providers do not support it to because of past legal action against clients.
3a. Install some anti-automation tools to make it more difficult to download en masse.
3b. Said anti-automation tools could be coerced legally to pull support from these """illegal""" websites. Also, would become an arms race where whichever side that has the most money and manpower would win (the AI bros.)

Massive Blow for the Gaming Archive Society

But it also shows I reckon why Torrents are very Important as they can then have these Packs as Torrents so people can still download and share. Also would not have to worry about Ratio's

Also show how Important to have more then 1 Place that you get Retro Games from and not just 1 Place.
Torrents are great and all but the problem with torrents is that you still end up relying on a handful of people to store all the files. I used to torrent a lot of stuff and the more obscure the stuff was the harder it was to find a reliable torrent with enough seeders that had all the files. I feel like even if Myrient archive is preserved with torrents over time the more obscure stuff, especially the stuff with larger file sizes, will still disappear as seeders with the entire collection slowly vanish and only partial copies are left.

I tried to DL some stuff from Myrient, but I get only 500kb/s. Is it always this slow? With these speeds it takes me ~4hours to DL a 9GB game. 😒

Today I had an anxiety attack when I found out about this (I haven't had one in ten years).
I already had 300 GB with almost all the No-Intro directories except for the heaviest ones.
I just bought a 5 TB external hard drive to try to save the DS, PS1, Saturn, and Dreamcast romsets.

I never used Myrient before this, aside from downloading some touhou stuff a few months ago. Not hating, but like... there's nothing on this site.

Was looking for a Saturn copy of Pu-Li-Ru-La earlier, and when I finally located the Saturn directory, it had like 20-30 games on there. I must be using the site wrong, since people are speaking about it like it was the most comprehensive archive online.

EDIT:
Hello @DaveTheMan I'm sorry my post upset you. Could you please give me some guidance on how to use the site if I am making some kind of mistake?

FWIW I found the game you mentioned within a minute or two, and in its collection it seems to have nearly every Saturn game released. You probably were looking in the Non-Redump directory within No-Intro. Seeing as the Saturn is a disc-based system, its games are more likely to be located in the Redump set. IME Redump is for discs, and No-Intro is for cartridges. This is probably an oversimplification, but generally I find it holds up. I've never messed with the other directories, so I'm not sure about those ones.

I just found out about Minerva Project a while ago, so I've stopped my downloads to avoid making things harder for them. Anyway, JDownloader was telling me it would take somewhere between 400 and 4000 days to download the entire PS1 romset. I'll see how I can help the project.

I think at this point it's probably doomed. I mean, the download speeds are so slow over at Myrient right now because of the vast amounts of people trying to archive it that I don't think they're gonna make the deadline. But I hope.

To kinda add to it. I think the biggest tragedy right now is Xbox 360 stuff. If Myrient's collection doesn't get backed up. Most of that stuff is gonna be gone forever, the 360 store is down so no official way to get some of that stuff, especially the Indie games. Real sad situation.

DL speed dropped to 250-300kb/s. I'll try it again at a different time when America sleeps. If it's the same, I'll give up. I don't see this DL speed improving when knowledge about the site spreads even more, day by day.

He/they self should've capped the DL speed from the beginning. Before the site exceeded the upload limit, or so.

Capping the download speed isn't a silver bullet, and would still add up over time.

Yes that's true, but it will give you at least some control on the DL volume. The other option is that you've to pull the plug on it, so to say. Disabling it completely. Or do nothing and lose $6k a month. ><
Anyway, speaking of dl speed. It improved a lot on Myrient today. Could it be that the Minerva guys are done downloading?

completely fucking gutted. devastating loss. one million billion plagues upon silicon valley. ai companies deserve so much suffering that it is fundamentally impossible to quantify it in the fabric of reality
So ture bestie.

Also people lets like make a list for games (and other stuff) that we can download from there for that we can keep safe at least somewhat

Ok so the consoles i had already finished personal archives of are
snes, n64, gamecube, wii, wii u(really just xcx and kirby rainbow curse), gb, gbc, gba, ds, 3ds, ps1, ps2, psp, saturn, dreamcast

stuff that is on my todo list
-classic sega consoles (genesis/mega drive,sega/mega cd,32x,game gear,master system/mark3, sg1000)
-psvita
-some microsoft consoles (msdos, msx, original xbox)
-nec consoles (pc88,pc98,pc-fx, pc engine/turbografix-16, turbografix cd)
-wonderswan
-snk consoles (neogeo, neogeo cd, neogeo pocket color)
-nes

im currently working on genesis/32x/segacd and then am going to do other classic sega consoles, out of that list what is the highest priority in terms of most danger of being lost
ok so weekly update, i have done the classic sega consoles, msx 1 and 2, and wonderswan

i dont think myrient had much stuff for xbox or vita but ill have to double check

this week ill try and get the turbografix and snk consoles, and maybe the nes as well

all that is left is the following
-original xbox
-msdos
-pc98
-pc88
-vita dlcs. im holding off to make sure i actually have enough storage space

-also some 3ds backups as well

also good news myrient has been fully backed up by minerva team, though it will take them a while to get their own site up and running so still an indeterminate amount of downtime

Seeing things like these is utterly dissapointing for me, but watching you guys and other people keeping the files circulating might be the most heartwarming thing i've ever saw. When people ask me if piracy is bad i always tell them this story:

When my father was a wee lad back in the old times, there was this thing called a library, were you could consult any kind of information using books, he used to visit there very often, and the librarian let him borrow books because he wasn't very rich to buy some, then one day the library was closed and demolished to build a hotel, and you know what the librarian did?, he donated the books to many schools and people like my father, just because he could, and he said this to him:

"Boy, take these, because someday, people in high places will want you to pay for something every person in this world has the right to do without paying, reading"

I know recent games must be bought to support the developers we love, and i 100% support that, but with old media, be it books, movies, and in this case games, why is it now that we can't have even the simplest joy of knowing that we can just start the program and play old games, without some asshole thinking we are BREAKING THE LAW (OH GOD WE ARE SO EVIL!) by enjoying something for free?

Aren't most or all of them owned by an Israeli company? I wouldn't want to give them my data, it's not worth it.

There's so many VPN providers to choose from. There's no way that's true.

Just got my first ever copyright notice last week. Gotta finally pick a VPN and get it set up.
