I've never really liked Half-Life itself, but my entire teen experience was the non-stop playing of Half-Life mods. Anything multiplayer specifically.

I remember playing this American Revolutionary War mod where reloading meant slowly putting gunpowder in the barrel of your rifle, then a ball bullet, then pounding it down with the ramrod before you could fire again. Most conflicts involved people jumping around each other in circles while waiting for their rifles to reload. It was hilariously stupid and a ton of fun.

It's battlegrounds?

Yes dude! Holy blast from the past! Man I had some good times with this game.

Have you played Firearms? It was a modern military mod. It was kind of shit, but I got a bot mod and would spend hours just holding points and killing bots. It was surprisingly relaxing.

Or The Specialists. God that was such a cool one.

I hope it counts even though it's a fangame (albeit a fangame that received Valve's blessing and permission to be sold commercially) but I played through the entirety of Black Mesa a few weeks back (last time I tried it they hadn't finished Xen) and holy moly, I was completely blown away.

Straight 10/10 game from beginning to end, absolute masterpiece. By far the best fangame ever made out of all the ones I've seen, and probably my favorite Half-Life game out of them all now, OG versions and sequels and whatnot included.

My thoughts here:

You could say I owe them part of my childhood.

I've always had a deep love for Valve's worldbuilding, ever since first playing Half-Life back in like 2010. Maybe the stories themselves aren't the deepest, most convoluted tales in gaming, but the way their games make you feel like you're a natural part of the world itself.

I missed the launch of Half Life Alyx, mainly because I didn't want to buy a headset for one game. But a year or so ago when I finally bought a headset for one game, man, that game really makes you feel like you're there.

Seeing the Combine Strider walk over your head in the opening on the rooftop had me gushing, I knew I was in for a treat.

Or the way the music changes depending on what's chasing you in Left 4 Dead. Really awesome immersive way to tell you some shit is going down.

Also the distinct personalities of the Mercenaries. Maybe that isn't the biggest thing compared to the other two examples, but it really goes above and beyond to make a multiplayer focused game feel like a real setting, and it humanizes the "products" so to speak so it adds to the little story TF2 does have.
