Mega Man Megathread

It's funny how some people complain about the Charge Shots making Special Weapons less useful, when MM1-MM3 are filled with useless pointless weapons.
MM5 is the definition of useless in its entirety. Nothing matters because of how brain dead the enemy design is. Why bother thinking when all the enemies rush to their death all the time?

Fake, what Mega Man games do you like?

MM1, MM3-4, MM6, MM&B, MM11, MMX1-2, Mega Man X Command Mission, all Battle Network games except 1, 4, 4.5, and 5, Mega Man ZX, Mega Man Star Force 1 and 3, all Mega Man World games except 2, Mega Man Battle & Chase.

There's a lot more, too.

No.
Yet it's seen as one of the best by the fans many times I see tops (along with the first X).

I kinda understand that MM1 is really archaic because it was the first and MM3 had some weird filler-ish areas like that one robot recreating the previous fights by making you redo 4 of the levels.

And?

Mega Man 2 is a good sequel, but IMO, everything after is more enjoyable, even games like 5 and 8.
Maybe Megaman 2 is popular the same reason why Sonic 2, Mario Bros 3 and even Kirby's Adventure are loved for dramatically improving what was done before. Mario Bros 2 was more of a 1.5 (or a romhack) while SMB3 was a true sequel to Super Mario Bros.

Sometimes a vastly improved sequel gets popular because it introduced new staples that would be kept in subsequent games (like having 8 robot masters instead of 6). The first episode often suffers from "early instalment weirdness".

I should try Megaman Powered up someday, I find it cute. Shame they couldn't have made the same with 2 and 3.

Also is the Willy Wars interesting to try? I heard the gameplay was not exactly the same in the same way Mario All-Star had altered physics for SMB 1&2.

MM2 didn’t dramatically improve anything. Made things worse, when MM1 had a great foundation. MM3 is where the improvements begun, then they were perfected in 4, then another misstep in 5, then another rise in 6, then a big fall in 7, and a bigger fall in 8…9…10….. but hey 11 was good!

I need to understand why Megaman 2 is the most successful entry among Classic fans then.

MM3 suffered from filler areas imo but I liked Protoman and I even prefer him over Zero himself.

8/9/10 were a fall?

Because most Mega Man fans are stupid. Next question.

When Megaman 2 was localized, it received a gigantic update that changed the whole game.

It added a “normal mode” which was a deceptive name anyways because the “hard mode” is just the original Japanese version.

“Normal mode” is almost literally a different game. All enemies take double the damage they normally would, which actually breaks some enemies like that specific “four cans” enemy that’s supposed to fall apart and explode on you if you shoot it once, but it dies instantly in “normal” mode instead.

Everyone just takes so much damage that it renders your entire arsenal moot since everyone just falls over backwards if you so much as sneeze on them.

MM2’s popularity was spread around the early 2000s to mid 2010s internet, an era of disinformation and poorly-informed takes. Many people spread MM2 like gospel, despite most fans unknowingly (and sometimes willingly) play on the “wrong” version, which was the baby easy mode. You can’t propely gauge just how poorly designed MM2 was. I think the rumor about it being developed during devs free time does not make the game look better, but rather vindicate criticism against.

I also hate that argument because it’s only ever used to further fuel MM1 hate and feed into the false narrative that MM1 was this gigantic failure when from what I could gather, MM1 still sold decently and was fairly popular. Megaman fans like to say any game they dislike was a failure, probably something they borrow from sonic fans.

It’s also really common in fandoms to not play past the first few entries. I know many of my friends who stopped somewhere between 2 and 4.

For the record, MM2 being developed during devs' spare time from developing another game is not a rumor, but a confirmed fact.

I’d also like to add that difficulty is not where the debate ends either. Even disregarding that aspect, 2 was just an overall “unfinished” game. Many aspects feel underutilized or outright forgotten. It feels like they added a lot of things in it that they wanted to remove but left in the game anyways. So many gimmicks that come in and go, and so many levels that really don’t feel playtested at all or just feel random.

That’s neat, I need to look up sales figures for MM1 as well. I get conflicting answers on that one. (I really hate the Megaman fandom sometimes…)

On a semi related note, I’ve been wanting to rant about Megaman’s design in smash bros. (Why the fuck are so many images online an avif file?! Anyways…)

It’s by far one of the worst pieces of 3d modeling i seen in my life and I plan to lovingly and hatingly tear to shreds once I find the time <\3

That said, im more interested in talking about something I do love!!!

In the upcoming Megaman 3 review I’ll go in more detail but for now I would like to briefly gush about Topman for a moment cuz he’s a lovely guy! Mainly small notes from my script. I would love to talk about his theme also, but I have a hard time discussing music, as I have little to say beyond that I like them and that quickly created filler (although for the record, some filler is fine, you can’t have a review be just a series of bullet points with no elaboration)

Anyways, I love Topman 😍
