Mega Man Megathread

On a semi related note, I’ve been wanting to rant about Megaman’s design in smash bros. (Why the fuck are so many images online an avif file?! Anyways…) View attachment 52195It’s by far one of the worst pieces of 3d modeling i seen in my life and I plan to lovingly and hatingly tear to shreds once I find the time <\3
What's the issue btw? Same as Sonic's?
 
The issue is that he looks like a bonsai kitten (i.e. he looks "compressed").
I do think its because he’s supposed to be a 3D depiction of the sprite first and foremost (also why he has those big dark eyes I always imagined). It only works halfway though because no other Smash character does that, so he kind of feels off-model for it.

I disliked it since day 1, and each passing year vindicates my dislike for it.
Ton already said it, so I’ll do my best not to repeat too much. But who the hell approved this?! It’s a very clear misinterpretation of Megaman’s design (an outsider misinterpreting Megaman?! More likely than you think!), it’s also another display of smash worship. Similar to Megaman, Sora’s model always bothered me and looked like a fan render. I guess you can’t be mad at fan requests anymore because the actual main game itself creates significantly worse stuff than the fandom.

I was actually prepared to agree completely with you, but the more I thought about it and read this I kind of understand where they were coming from. I wouldn’t go as far as to call it a misinterpretation since he clearly states the intentions (which confirmed my suspicions that its the sprite in 3D), but then again it doesn’t mean I have to take it as gospel (or treble).


(Sora on the other hand I think just looks ”fixed” compared to his PS2 KH1 version as he looks like the original art but 3D but that’s not this thread lol)

The bizarre part is that this sounds more like an American misinterpreting his design, considering the whole “super fighting robot” shit, but I’m pretty sure the Bandai Namco staff is predominantly Japanese- OOOOHHH so that’s why… man, I keep forgetting Bamco are the kings of “fucking everything up”, i should’ve realized sooner ::dkfacepalm (Context: they’re the devs for smash 4 specifically, where Megaman debuted)

Oh, this is the same issue with Classic Pit in his Melee trophy model.

I think is more that they saw this

and only went for it, which I think is a novel idea since it makes it feel ”game first”, but as I said it also makes him feel kind of off-model because its a sort of new take.

Sakurai seems to have pretty specific ideas of certain characters. For good and bad.

I only just now discovered that the PS1 had rereleases of the classic MegaMan series, up until 6. I’m sad they didn’t go to 7, especially since Capcom wasn’t a stranger to releasing SFC games on the system, but still.

I would be looking to own 3, since it’s my favorite of the 8 bit games, possibly 6 since it’s my second favorite. Also, way down the road in life, I think owning the book series releases of 1 and 2 would be fun. My only question is: are they poor quality? Do they have the same emulation issues that the later Anniversary Collection does?

They're pretty good.

I think they could be fun to own for the novelty of it, but I don't think I'd play them over the originals/more faithful ports. They have a weird mishmash of mixed styles with remade music (which I think is worse, and some levels have altered music. Top Man's stage has the intro stage from MM7 for some reason) while still keeping the NES sounds, and certain UI elements look like MM8 so it kind of clashes.

The gameplay itself seems alright, though.
 
I’ll have to try it via the repo first. Compare the input delay with the original releases.

Also, I’ll try to see if those changes are options or forced. I’d imagine the music is, but perhaps the “nav mode” is just a mode like in Anniversary Collection.
 
I despise the fact my heart skips a beat anytime I see capcom logo in a nintendo direct.
Yeah, I know how you feel.
Capcom will always be the ones not making any announcements.
It’s all just SF, RE and MH now.
