They don't look badass, they simply look like they slept first in the sleepover, if you want to make a girl look badass and give her a fitting hair, just make her hair look messy and make it simply short, like you know someone that has frequent fights for her life.

Even women in the military aren't shaved that close to the scalp (as long as hair doesn't go below the neck and the forehead it's regulatory).

Ellen Ripley in Alien and Aliens is a great example (Alien 3 had her shaved but in the context everyone had to get that shaving, it's not just her deciding she didn't need any).


I'd even say that it's a massive shame that writers and designers assumed that for a woman to be a strong character she had to forfeit anything remotely feminine (which can almost be seen as an unconsciously sexist mindset from those writers).

Modern writers haven't understood that you can write a female character who's more nuanced than just being "strong" (which is also a relative term because it's not all about physical strength) so nowadays we have "unidimensional" characters and I also think that it has done harm than good.

Just check how Mary Sues are and how characters lacking any flaws can be detrimental to a story.
