Forum Masquerade?

... Around 1000 people joined since this post went live O.O!

Better start picking names, everyone xD

So how it's going to work?
Users would guess who is an alt of who?
If so, how the guess is verified, and is there a limit on the number of guesses?
We can brainstorm it.
How about this?
Each player can post their guess about all other players once every 3 days.
One guess for each of them, not multiple guesses.

If a player guesses correctly about another player's alt, that player will lose the game.

Ho ho better start my new me hehe you never knew.

Some ideas here, obviously these can be tweaked:

The concept of the game is that everyone participating makes an alt account and posts on it as if they're new, and the objective is to guess which accounts are alts, and who is behind them.

In a range of 2-3 days, on a designated thread people can say that they are participating (obviously don't reveal what your alt is, though!) and make their alt accounts and begin posting. After this range is up, no more people can join. We can also discuss if we want to make known which accounts are alts so the game is to guess who is BEHIND the alt, or if we want to make it so that deducing who is an alt and who is just a new person is part of the game, we can play that way instead.

Once per day, each player can guess the identity of one player [GUESS: X player is actually Y]. If a guess is correct, it is confirmed in the thread. We can even discuss rules such as if non-participating players can guess, too.

Continue until either a certain date, or until there's only a few people left. Really depends on how many people join (I don't remember ever having very many players).

The only main issue that remains is guess confirmation. We can just rely on people to be honest about who they are and assume that they'll check the guess thread for their name somewhat frequently. Or, if we have somebody trustworthy who isn't playing, perhaps they could have a spreadsheet and moderate the event to prevent cheating? A lot of this is up to moderator decision.

Moderators have access to ip adresses though, don't they? That might complicate things a bit.

No idea, but if they do I don't believe it's that much of an issue... Sam may be the only moderator participating (maybe we'll end up with more) and all the mods around here are trustworthy enough. It's not like you accidentally glance at an IP address and instantly know who someone is. You'd have to intentionally cross reference IP addresses to discover someone's real account vs. their alt.

As I said, there's definitely a few small issues that will need to be addressed, and rules that just need to be under discussion, but for the most part we're looking pretty good.

We do, but there's no cross-referencing tool.

I was planning to use that ability to confirm or deny guesses.

(I, of course, plan to be completely transparent about my own account in the competition).

Sounds good to y'all?

Well..... if anyone feels they can't trust everyone, why not have one moderator who is in on it, and everyone DM them with their alt? This way, there's no way anyone could just deny it.

That's an interesting idea! Though since I'm nobody it probably doesn't make sense for me to participate.
Can non participant also join to guess without participating in the masquerade? If so maybe I can join as just the "spotter" instead.

Also "masquerade" makes me think of vampire, I imagine the peoples disguising is a vampire trying to expose each other to eliminate rivals, and a "spotter" is a detective trying to expose them all.

Though I'm still not familiar with anyone yet so I doubt I can guess who is who ::biggrin

That's interesting — how would that be?

At some point, we'll have to do this as well. It's somewhat common, "Anonymafia" is what I've usually heard it called although I've never actually gotten to play it myself.

I never play something like this so I don't really know. And thinking about it I start to see problem with that idea, participant can be eliminated but non participant cannot be.

For me sounds to make up

I appreciated you suggesting it anyway ^^

Well yeah...... not really knowing the reg's around here, it would be quite difficult to spot someone cosplaying as a new user.. as it where.

And depending on how well they can pull it off, it might be difficult for people who interact with users every day to even tell, to be honest
