Fire Emblem Megathread

congrats on beating the game. now it's time to play the sequel.::megadancebaby
yeah, sedgar and wolf are 2 of the most broken characters in the game, especially if they are in the general class. they basically become walking demon walls from final fantasy after 2 level ups.
Thanks ::peacemario I will play the sequel, but not right now. Gonna rest from FE for a while.
Yeah, I didn't know how broken Sedgar was in Shadow Dragon. He basically saved my run a lot of times, especially at the end.
I got curious: gameplay and story wise, is New Mystery of The Emblem better than Shadow Dragon?

i'll get back to you on new mystery of the emblem. i tried it out, but that was mainly with testing emulators. this is where the "avatar" character thing starts up though. you get a fairly customizable player character who is part of the story.
i think, as part of it being a port/remake, they probably tweaked some stats for characters. i don't think you could swap classes in the original, and a lot of characters end up sitting on the bench most of the time. it seems like most characters were buffed a bit to encourage more replays with different builds, primarily for the multiplayer mode.

Neat, didn't know the customizable character started in this game.
In essence, it close to Shadow Dragon, but with some changes here and there. I saw some screenshots from New Mystery and the characters still have the same stoic faces from earlier ::eggmanlaugh
I gonna give it a shot someday, before that i want to play some good FE, the ones that are high regarded in the community, like Awakening and Path of Radiance.

i've seen some discussions on some fire emblem videos that the ds games might have been testing grounds for later ideas, like casual mode and the custom avatar character.
it should be like shadow dragon, but according to some notes that i read while checking out the shadow dragon: full content patch, they adjusted the stat growth rates, and they seem to be higher in the sequel game, since using the patch version with the new emblem growth rates makes shadow dragon easier.
awakening is pretty good, most of the game can be made super easy with the buddy system they implemented, where characters join up to fight alongside each other. you get extra damage and enemy attacks can be nullified by the partner character. it also helps speed up support bonds.
path of radiance is one of the best ones, but make sure that you play through it on at least normal mode. you can transfer some clear data to the sequel, but the game crashes if the data is from a save on the easy difficulty.
i was quite pissed the first time i played radiant dawn after just clearing path of radiance. it kept crashing so i just skipped it and played through on a clean file.

Since they finally put PoR on Switch 2 I'm finally playing it more there since it's much more comfortable in my living room. I did tried the game on Dolphin. Here it runs pretty good, constant 60fps and no sign of framerate drop or of bad emulation.
I really like the narration of the game and imo it's how more of the games of the series should do: present the main characters from the get-go. Listen, it's cool to have lore and geopolitics explained, but I rather wanna have it...progressively, y'know. When I first started the game and got introduced right away to Ike and his mercenary allies I felt already involved in the Tellius world and slowly discovering kingdoms and such.

You do a way better job explaining why the game is so good better than I ever could.
Happy you're having fun! It's my fav..

The OVA is far from being perfect but I like the aesthetic

Currently on chapter 9 of Path of Radiance. I have few questions that I feel are no-spoiler:
  • this isn't exactly a question, but more a trivia confirmation: I discovered that the burning house in chapter 1 can't be saved at all, it's indeed fully scripted. Hacking it to forcefully save it apparently freezes the game.
  • hqdefault.jpg

ok, so I was thinking: I checked the "Info" segment (which was full of interesting dialogues) in chapter 9. Could have I missed something out in Chapter 8 (when technically the base gets unlocked)? Hopefully nothing...
  • the beach coast houses seems very hard to save from Daein soldiers and pirates...which units should I send to save them?

for right now, i don't think you missed much, if anything. i think you missed out on some character bonding. later you can get weapons, items and money. and i believe a skill scroll from a hidden character with bullshit recruitment requirements.
off the top of my head, i don't think there is really anything important. i would check a guide for stuff you can get from houses. it's usually a weapon, staff, money or an item. you won't recruit anyone from houses in this game.
Post automatically merged:

i found a map of the chapter. there is a small spoiler for a potential recruit, so be cautious when reading it. but like i thought; the rewards from the houses are kind of mid.

Two years ago or so, I started Fire emblem for GBA and I was quite enjoying it on my 3DS. Unfortunately, because of an accidental format of my 3DS while jailbreaking a DIFFERENT 3DS, I lost my save. I was probably about 15 hours in. Not too long after finishing the 11 chapter "tutorial".

I'd like to experience more Fire Emblem on handhelds, especially the 2D titles. However, I absolutely cannot be asked to go through all those stages once again just to get where I was before, especially with a gargantuan backlog. Kinda wanna watch an extensive youtube essay coverage instead while I rest/eat.

How essential is finishing Blazing Blade before trying out something like Sacred Stones? Is the mechanical gameplay evolution a big step up? I'm aware of Binding Blade, but after some of the things I've heard - I'm not particularly interested, and I like to have my RPG journeys relatively hassle free.

Regardless of my conclusion as a result of this thread, I'll be tackling Path of Radiance this year on Dolphin.

It's too bad there's no level select thingie for Blazing Blade, as I was having a damn good time with those stages.

Open to advice/suggestions,

Thanks!

The two aren't really connected at all as far as the narrative is concerned. The mechanics are mostly the same as well, but Sacred Stones has branching paths when you upgrade a unit to their next class, so instead of going from one class to the next, you get to pick from two classes with their own advantages and drawbacks.

honestly you can skip fe7, the story kinda sucks and while fe8 is easier difficulty wise, it is a more complete experience. including a postgame (one of 2 fe's with one)

if you really want to play it you could potentially put in a request for a save file or something maybe?

If you want a true experience of what FIRE EMBLEM is (a tactical/strategy RPG with management of LIMITED resources, troops/characters, experience acumulated, time) and a good story, then, FE7 is a great choice for you.
Sacred Stones, lost a great part of the "management limited of resources", because there is no OVERWORLD (that able the griding effect) in FE7, only the chapters to fight and the missions, and has a poor story too.
FE6 is a great game too. In truth, he is the sequel of FE7, but was released before. But he is much more difficult than FE7, has a lot characters and mini routes to follow. Its post-game has a lot to do.
AND HAS THE WORST LORD EVER!!!

actually i went back and checked my save data on it and i actually have a save at the start of chapter 10 which is the last chapter of lyn mode. ill attach a copy for you but what i said earlier still stands: fe7 is the most skippable fe game

Finally planning to beat Path of Radiance very soon, being at Chapter 25 and actually having Radiant Dawn ready there, just in case. Not that I'm planning to go with that right after by any means since I do feel the fatigue from the games, but I did liked what I saw from the Tellius games quite a lot. Easily way more memorable to me than anything post-Awakening (if we exclude Echoes/SoV).

Anyways: what was I thinking back in late 2000s when I sold Shadow Dragon for DS to Gamestop?? Replaying on Desmume made me realize how actually awesome the game is. Sure, presentation is whatever, and it blew my mind that the character design is done by the same dude who worked on Ghost in the Shell.

By curiosity: does anyone knows where I can find repro cartridge for DS games? Especially ones that never got released outside of japan and fan-translated? I wanna avoid Etsy since prices there are outrageous.
...and, yep, it's mainly for FE12 aka New Mystery of the Emblem.

fe12 is in the repo, and if you have a new3ds model 3ds; you can play ds games on it. twilight menu uses the native dsi software to play the games just like on an official handheld.

I'm actually very fond of reproduction cartridges. I have plenty for the SNES (including FE4 and FE5) and GBA (FE6). So with FE the only unlocalized one I miss are FE2 (if I'll ever get a NES) and FE3 (SNES).
So, welp, why not get the only other one for DS that sadly didn't got officially localized? I know that with R4 and what you mentioned (appreciate the suggestion btw, don't get me wrong) it's much more cheaper while feeling legit since it's played on original hardware, but there's that charm I can't help it.

i don't know if fan translations can get put onto reproduction cartridges. i've never heard of that happening, but i haven't gone very deep into that territory yet. it could be very well possible to do that. otherwise, you'll just have to dedicate a single R4 just to replicate the feeling of having a legit cartridge.
hopefully someone who knows more about this will come along and help you out on that.

Man desert Elibe maps suck, whenever I'm playing one of the elibe games i go thru at a preety good pace until i hit that desert map and then just stop for a bit before picking it back up again.

anyone have similar experiences?

i had to look this up because i didn't recognize the name off hand.
yeah, desert maps suck in fire emblem in general. other games can handle them well like mario, star wars and star fox.

Welp, immediately started Radiant Dawn (legit copy played on a Wii btw) right after PoR beside the burn out I felt. And the game already captured me with a really great presentation. I love that it doesn't mess around right from the prologue and if one unit dies then it's Game Over. I really wish there is this possibility with every game, I really do want to keep every single of my units alive 'till the end.

Anyways: from what I've gathered, the only games direct-sequel related are:

FE1 - FE3 = FE11 - FE12 (with FE13 aka Awakening being the same timeline/world).
FE4 - FE5
FE6 - FE7
FE9 - FE10
Three Houses potentially with Fortune's Weave.

FE2 and FE15 coincide, FE8 aka Sacred Stones I'm sure it's is own world. Engage is a weird case but I'm not gonna count connected it with every FE in a similar BOTW fashion that is at the end of every timeline in Zelda.

thats about right, the only thing i'd clarify is that fe5 is more of a (potentially alt universe) gaiden game that is intended as what would happen in one possibility of fe4's pairing system. also fe warriors three hopes is an alt universe what if to fe16.

also of note is that kaga wrote fe4 and fe5 and stated as such in dev notes that they are distant prequels to fe1/fe3b1/fe11. though its not really relevant to the stories of either

oh and also fe14 is a sort of sequel to fe13
