Fire Emblem Megathread

thats about right, the only thing i'd clarify is that fe5 is more of a (potentially alt universe) gaiden game that is intended as what would happen in one possibility of fe4's pairing system. also fe warriors three hopes is an alt universe what if to fe16.

also of note is that kaga wrote fe4 and fe5 and stated as such in dev notes that they are distant prequels to fe1/fe3b1/fe11. though its not really relevant to the stories of either

oh and also fe14 is a sort of sequel to fe13

Interesting for Thracia being a What If from FE4. Reminds me a lot of SMT If (that one also known as "Persona 0") being a sequel to SMT 1 in the scenario where no nuclear strike happened. I wouldn't count much games like the musou, just like as also Heroes.

Fates is a big stretch since apparently it's just for a DLC matter.

its not just a dlc thing. 3 characters from awakening reappear in fates: owain, inigo, and severa under alius' and the are from after the end of awakening.

I want to start this series...as i hear so many good things. If im going to put 60+ hrs into a thing does anyone have recommendations for which one to start with?

i would suggest fire emblem shadow dragon, path of radiance, or awakening. those games are a bit more forgiving in terms of difficulty. the gba games autosave every move, so if a character dies and you hit the reset button and continue, it just loads up the character dying again, so you would have to restart the whole chapter.

"60+ hours". Yeah, that's an exaggeration. Sacred Stones is like 21 hours long, unless you're slow at reading dialogues (more or less like me), but they're not necessarily all that long, but neither short. Then there are games like Three Houses which are objectively very very long.
Welp, I just gave a suggestion since that game is very friendly for newcomers (or Blazing Sword aka FE7, in alternative. But that one is definitely not a short game or still as short as FE8 or even Path of Radiance for GC).

the gba games or awakening are great places to start

We could say "basically anything beyond FE7". Any game prior to FE6 is definitely way more on the old-school side. But there are definitely more polished, eased-down versions of those games as well thanks to the hackrom scenario.

i disagree, fe6 was the second fe i played and it wasnt that difficult once you got passed some of the jank with the hitrates

For the record: I play all these games while keeping every single of my units alive 'till the end ahah, so it's definitely my masochistic side that is convinced about it. I wouldn't still recommend FE6 as the first game since FE7 is basically done on purpose for newbies. Lyn's story acts as a full 11 chapters tutorial after all.

Holy crap, I'm having so much fun with 4 FE games I'm currently rotating. ::happy-harkinian
I'm definitely focusing more on Shadow Dragon for DS (luckily recovered at a reasonable price, rn at chapter 6), but I was also playing Radiant Dawn (which I'll return after, still at the Dawn Brigade arc) and FE7 (chapter 16).
...and Tokyo Mirage Sessions (done chapter 1). At least the SMT core on the battle system is there, whic is what I was mostly interested anyways.

And yet Kirbo can't hold an actual keyblade because Nomura told Sakurai "don't".

Finally beat FE11 aka Shadow Dragon DS remake. Man, this game was really intense. Certain maps felt ungodly frustrating (looking at Chapter 12, 13 and 21...). When you get Falchion and basically want to permanent-buff Marth for the pure lul, you basically pulverize Medeus or the remaining manaketes between chapter 24 and the final one, especially with the hidden shop being generous about it.

The game may not have support conversations, but I saw it registers every dialogue cutscene. And there's a lot, many impossible to get in a single playthrough for plenty of scripted reasons.

I feel I would probably get into FE4 and 5 later, but I still want them since I know how much important they are. But I do wanna play Echoes, FE12 aka New Mystery of the Emblem, Radiant Dawn and the Elibe GBA games first.

I've only played Three Houses, Sacred Stones, Thracia 776 and Echoes. Out of those four, Echoes is my favorite, with Three Houses at a close second.

a bunch of the event scenes come from the gaiden chapters, which require you to have less than 15 units alive when you get to them, save for one chapter, which only opens up when you fail the main objectives of getting falchion and the starlight tome. and each gaiden chapter gives you a new character as well.
and no, they are not really worth it as far as i can tell. there's also 2 endings to the game as well.

The 2 endings is decided if Shiida/Caeda is alive or not at the end, correct? Yeah, I feel I'm done with most of what Shadow Dragon has to offer. I guess I'll see those units on YouTube and be ok with.

yeah, the ending you get is whether caeda lives or dies.
that would probably be better than actually going through the maps to get them. only the recruitable character in the first gaiden chapter is interesting, the rest are rather mundane. even the replacement character for one of the main characters is just okay.

I actually did chapter 6x and it was so funny how they translated Athena's speeches ahah. So I basically got the best from this game then. I already moved on to other stuff already (Tales of Phantasia, my beloved), but I'll 100% go after Echoes and New Mystery of the Emblem in consequence sooner or later.

I think I finally realized I really dislike Three Houses instead of just being "disappointed" by it.

Also, I will admit...I started playing Engage because of Lumera--BUT I'm actually enjoying Engage...

I just had to mod Alear's hair because that blue and red make my eyes hurt!!!

There’s a lot to like about 3 Houses, but there’s also a lot it just fumbles. Story wise I think it can be very fun, but there’s a lot about the gameplay mechanics - especially the hub world and how classes are handled - that I feel miss pretty bad.

It was a game with a lot of ambition, and probably the most ambitious FE since Geneology. Unfortunately, to me, it gets overly complicated almost every where.

I still adore Three Houses even with how messy, and repetitive it can get on repeat playthroughs. I'd love a Switch 2 Edition that fixes up the visuals, and adds some extra stuff to the monastery.

Seeing as the game already takes plenty of inspiration from Persona, I always thought it'd be cool if a "Definitive Edition" of Three Houses introduced a day/night cycle, with unique activities, and characters to interact with. I feel like that would spice the monastery up a lot more.

I definitely agree on how they handled classes though, especially with how some are bizarrely gender locked. I'd like to see that adjusted as well.

Just getting into this series - I literally just started -, but I can confidently say that I both already like it and believe it's perhaps the game series that benefits the most from having ROM hacks... Vanilla is rough.

Just got to the route split of FE5. This game is incredible. I absolutely adore how much it pushes me to step outside my comfort zone and try out different strategies.

The gameplay/story integration is top notch, too. Every chapter feels appropriately dire, and like an uphill battle because of the narrative circumstances. Just an excellent game all around. It can certainly be very frustrating, but when it clicks, it's rewarding in a way that no other FE game is.
