Any other Linux users here? And has anyone fully migrated?

the best software i found in linux (i've started using linux recently, sorry) are from KDE team, i really liked dolphin, haruna and kdenlive. so i was thinking a KDE distro maybe will be better for me, and found about kubuntu (fedora looks to be harder to learn and neon they say has many bug).
I think this is a very good reason to switch distributions. I use KDE Plasma as well (although on Arch) and I agree, I think their software is among the best. Switching to a KDE Plasma desktop would likely be a better fit for you then, most popular ones have it as an option.

Neon looks to be a good option too, but i read it is full of bugs.

If you're already familiar with Mint/Ubuntu and happy with it, then Kubuntu would be a good choice. It's been years since I looked at Neon, so I can't speak on its bugginess, but the main difference between them is that Kubuntu is an Ubuntu-based distro which uses the Plasma desktop from the Ubuntu team, and KDE Neon is the an Ubuntu-based distro which uses the Plasma desktop from the KDE team. Personally, I would give Kubuntu a try.

thank you for the answer. i will backup my emulator's saves and try to install it.

i didn't know that difference you mentioned, i was thinking there were only one kde, not different versions from different devs. but i still hope the kde software will work better than it works in mint, even if the system itself is not from the kde team

So there's 3 main linux baselines that most people use, these are debian, fedora and arch, mint and kubuntu are on debian, with the main differences between them being their update schedule, though arch has the AUR and debian and fedora have flatpak, though arch can use flatpak as well if setup for it.
There are a few other baselines like gentoo but if your asking questions about desktop environments, your not ready to know about those, those are the ones notorious for their difficulty because they are made more for linux pros, people who can live in the terminal for example.

Anyway KDE is a desktop environment, not a distro, as such it's technically possible to install it on any distro that has wayland support, as such there are plenty of debian based distros that can run kde plasma, debian itself has it in it's install options for example, other linux desktop environments with a bit of a reputation are GNOME (though personally i think the gnome devs are a bit crazy), XMCE, cinnamon (what linux mint uses) and MATE (basically gnome 2 or 3, i get the number wrong fork).

Kubuntu i found to be generally unstable for me, though that might have been unique to me, plus it was like 3 years ago i tested it.

I will say this, KDE is more common on fedora and arch based distros, especially arch, but it's not totally unheard of for it.

If you want to try a debian distro designed around gaming that has KDE, you could always try PikaOS:

Mentioning this one because it's the one i know has a kde version.

i'm using mint but sincerely i'm not liking it very much.

does anyone use kubuntu? can you tell me if this one is good?
Sounds like you're after a KDE environment. I have a bias against Ubuntu based distros as I'm team Fedora. Will definitely recommend against KDE Neon since it's on life support being maintained by one guy in his spare time. KDE Linux is KDE's new distro that they're going with and focusing on but it's still in Alpha and is an immutable but will be the experience the KDE devs want Plasma to be. Leon above did mention PikaOS which comes with a bunch of gaming utilities/fixes. Of course I would end up recommending Fedora since that is what I use especially if you want up to date packages with a GUI app store which is the main thing stopping me from using Arch. But hey, it's all free so nothing is stopping you from distro hopping if you try something and don't like it, that's what I did a lot of when I first started :p

I’m only a recent user though so I’m still getting my bearings. It’s very fun though. Feels really “game-y” and “old-school” in a way.
It's what I love about Mint...it feels like old school windows in a way and it's what I'm used to when it come to PCs.

I'm happy with Plasma in Mageia ::cirnoshrug
You did send me down a rabbit hole to try to find out more about Mageia. Sadly not many recent youtube videos and their website is down due to something with their datacenter. So instead I might put Pop! OS on my secondary OS SSD to try out Cosmic Beta

This video is a good watch for people who are interested in linux in general.

Again, bazzite is rather suggested in the video, but as i said, it's BECAUSE it doesn't change alot until big kernel changes, which is 100% needed for benchmarking, if you want that bit more performance, you need a arch distro, but if you want 100% stability, bazzite, pika os, and anything debian based is your preference.
For intermediate or higher users who are gamers, i'd go arch type, no question.

Debian Linux is such a beautiful distro, I've been using it for over 5 years. Linux mint is awesome too, and have many friends that use it successfully, but debian Linux is truly "set & forget" if you're willing to put just a little extra effort into setup. I've have installs, server and desktop, running for over 6 years, multiple dist upgrades, and updates never broke. Just figured I'd share my debian love for my first post

I'm sure mageia is a fine distro, but I remember nothing but pain and suffering using mandriva >_< I only used it because I was learning and that's what my friend used, even though this was after things were going downhill for the distro >_> Anyway, that's why I never gave mageia a try.

lol, speaking of mandriva (brought back memories): Debian is what I went to after I was done with mandriva. I enjoyed that, but then went to mint. Then manjaro. Now I use Garuda.

what was wrong with mandriva ? only real problem i have with it is maybe not a lot of softwares in the repo but I learned to live with it

(and also i think the mesa version is a little bit too old for my 9070xt might try to compile a newer version later idk)

I remember it being a nightmare to get wifi to work. Things would break after updates etc. I think also the package manager urpmi would give me problems? idk, this was long ago. Probably my fault, since like I said, I was new to linux. After mandriva was pretty dead, I tried Debian next and remember that wasn't as frustrating.

I have to ask, was this mandriva or open mandriva?
Open mandriva is more or less a continuation/fork of the abandoned mandrake project while mandriva linux was another branch continuation, i can't remember if open mandriva is a continuation of the abandoned mandriva but either way it's a apples to oranges comparison, mandriva linux hasn't been worked on for years, on the other hand everything i hear about open mandriva is that it just works, the main complaint being what vulonkaaz said, lack of programs in it's software repo, open mandriva is updated fairly regularly.

Last official release of mandriva linux was in 2011, open mandriva, which is a much more evolved version of it, is still worked on.

I'm talking about mandriva. I don't know anything about open mandriva.

After mandriva died, many went to work on mageia which is why I brought it up.

Thinking about trying it myself when i upgrade my pc, but i need to figure a few things out first.

i suggest you do it before upgrading actually the mesa version is barely recent enough to handle 2025 gpus
(unless you install the rolling release idk)

i always go rolling release, the reason i'm considering it is i prefer arch based distros for this reason.

first, thanks to everyone for the help earlier.

installed kubuntu here, it is working way better than mint, even my generic bt joystick worked.

i have the impression it is a bit heavier, but i'm able to run it fine.

life goes on

Decided to finally run Linux on the main machine, went with CachyOs, it has been mostly frictionless, to be fair I have been using FOSS for ages and I'm too anti-social for the fucky anti-cheat games, so, very painless.

Honestly the switch is generally easy, barring a few oddities or if you have the rare hardware that won't work on linux due to drivers.

It's certainly a far cry from 5 years ago where the switch was much harder, especially for gaming.

kubuntu user here. i just turned my 6 years old laptop in to a "smart tv" with kubuntu as its os. so far, it's a good linux os.

kubuntu too huh? lol. yeah, it's good. it's actually fair to navigate, especially if you want to customized the whole theme.
