I’m only a recent user though so I’m still getting my bearings. It’s very fun though. Feels really “game-y” and “old-school” in a way.

It's what I love about Mint...it feels like old school windows in a way and it's what I'm used to when it come to PCs.

You did send me down a rabbit hole to try to find out more about Mageia. Sadly not many recent youtube videos and their website is down due to something with their datacenter. So instead I might put Pop! OS on my secondary OS SSD to try out Cosmic Beta

This video is a good watch for people who are interested in linux in general.

Again, bazzite is rather suggested in the video, but as i said, it's BECAUSE it doesn't change alot until big kernel changes, which is 100% needed for benchmarking, if you want that bit more performance, you need a arch distro, but if you want 100% stability, bazzite, pika os, and anything debian based is your preference.
For intermediate or higher users who are gamers, i'd go arch type, no question.

Debian Linux is such a beautiful distro, I've been using it for over 5 years. Linux mint is awesome too, and have many friends that use it successfully, but debian Linux is truly "set & forget" if you're willing to put just a little extra effort into setup. I've have installs, server and desktop, running for over 6 years, multiple dist upgrades, and updates never broke. Just figured I'd share my debian love for my first post

I'm sure mageia is a fine distro, but I remember nothing but pain and suffering using mandriva >_< I only used it because I was learning and that's what my friend used, even though this was after things were going downhill for the distro >_> Anyway, that's why I never gave mageia a try.

lol, speaking of mandriva (brought back memories): Debian is what I went to after I was done with mandriva. I enjoyed that, but then went to mint. Then manjaro. Now I use Garuda.

what was wrong with mandriva ? only real problem i have with it is maybe not a lot of softwares in the repo but I learned to live with it

I remember it being a nightmare to get wifi to work. Things would break after updates etc. I think also the package manager urpmi would give me problems? idk, this was long ago. Probably my fault, since like I said, I was new to linux. After mandriva was pretty dead, I tried Debian next and remember that wasn't as frustrating.

Open mandriva is more or less a continuation/fork of the abandoned mandrake project while mandriva linux was another branch continuation, i can't remember if open mandriva is a continuation of the abandoned mandriva but either way it's a apples to oranges comparison, mandriva linux hasn't been worked on for years, on the other hand everything i hear about open mandriva is that it just works, the main complaint being what vulonkaaz said, lack of programs in it's software repo, open mandriva is updated fairly regularly.

Last official release of mandriva linux was in 2011, open mandriva, which is a much more evolved version of it, is still worked on.

After mandriva died, many went to work on mageia which is why I brought it up.

i suggest you do it before upgrading actually the mesa version is barely recent enough to handle 2025 gpus
(unless you install the rolling release idk)

i always go rolling release, the reason i'm considering it is i prefer arch based distros for this reason.

first, thanks to everyone for the help earlier.

installed kubuntu here, it is working way better than mint, even my generic bt joystick worked.

i have the impression it is a bit heavier, but i'm able to run it fine.

Decided to finally run Linux on the main machine, went with CachyOs, it has been mostly frictionless, to be fair I have been using FOSS for ages and I'm too anti-social for the fucky anti-cheat games, so, very painless.

Honestly the switch is generally easy, barring a few oddities or if you have the rare hardware that won't work on linux due to drivers.

It's certainly a far cry from 5 years ago where the switch was much harder, especially for gaming.

kubuntu user here. i just turned my 6 years old laptop in to a "smart tv" with kubuntu as its os. so far, it's a good linux os.

kubuntu too huh? lol. yeah, it's good. it's actually fair to navigate, especially if you want to customized the whole theme.

for Linux Mint that is not that new kernel friendly, I resorted to Xanmod kernel that takes better advantage of resources compared to 6.8. I notice some less slowdowns in some Retroarch games for example

I use the LTS 6.12 version because anything above that simply does not boot.

Add also that some Nvidia drivers are finicky with an external vga crt monitor, one reason I stuck to 580.07 and do not update. Laptop is over 8 years old and gtx nvidia support will end soon.

Struck the best balance between old and new.
