for Linux Mint that is not that new kernel friendly, I resorted to Xanmod kernel that takes better advantage of resources compared to 6.8. I notice some less slowdowns in some Retroarch games for example

I use the LTS 6.12 version because anything above that simply does not boot.

Add also that some Nvidia drivers are finicky with an external vga crt monitor, one reason I stuck to 580.07 and do not update. Laptop is over 8 years old and gtx nvidia support will end soon.

Struck the best balance between old and new.

Switched to CachyOS for gaming and love it.

Been using Debian on my non gaming laptop for years. It just werks.

Recently made the hop to ManjaroKDE on my main laptop after windows completely wrecked the partition-scheme in an update and the laptop decided that 16GB ram was just too much and killed it's second DIMM Slot. Been using plain Arch on a work laptop with XFCE and wanted to try something that's stupid simple to use for free-time gaming and side work.

Been solid! Riced it to look vaguely like Windows 7 and called it a day.

your window decoration looks weird because the icons are set to small, there should be an option to make them larger

my own kde desktop in case i never posted it before

Yeah I had them larger but, to me, I like clickable things on my computer to be pretty small

Never really went for perfection more just what's familiar from past machines and intuitivity above all else

I do also eventually plan on switching to OpenBSD or a version of XFCE like my work machine

tried omarchy
- none of the 3 versions of teamspeak on aur launched ootb something about qapplication
- getting pip errors after just a few boots, i barely touched anything

it seems to me its better to run the base distros

linux setup update!

- back to awesome window manager after a couple months
- new colorscheme
- two wallpapers for each monitor although you cant see my other wallpaper in this
- tmux-centric setup
- custom colorscheme

many more stuff under the hood and i plan to implement a bunch of functionality in this, its a setup that i want to stick to for a very long time

Windows users: begone!
Mac normies: avast!
This thread is only for the REAL nerds, who think the computer is not just a tool, but a form of art and expression!
No room for bloat here, and beer isn't as free as you think!

Title says it all. There seems to be a general anti-Windows sentiment going around lately, so I wanted to know what you guys use.
Pick an option in the poll and fight to the death in the replies!

I use Arch, btw.
I like the idea of arch but I don't like how every now and then an official update breaks everything
Also I think it must be the only distro ever to have malware submitted to its repository thanks to the AUR lol

on my gaming PC win 11 because im forced to well kind of. But honestly I don´t mind win 11 as my version is so clean from shit I don´t even have edge "some times some application like Purple wanna open edge when you log in but then my PC is like Explorer 11 does not work. But honestly I have 0 issue with my install of Win 11.

But on my Laptop I use Linux mint xfce as the XFCE is very good version to use for older tech like my 2013 Sony vaio.

Unfortunately I do have to use one Windows based PC, but that's a work thing.

I use both Mint and Arch (by the way) and Bazzite and Batocera, depending on what I need or want to do at any particular time. The Mint system is mostly for media, movies, music, YouTube, and the like. Bazzite and Batocera are pretty self-explanatory.

Arch well, I'm not going to discuss what my Arch systems are for.

Lightning struck near my house recently and fried my motherboard's SATA drive- nuking my boot drive!! I took this as a sign from the linux gods that it must be time to make a switch! (Also my motherboard doesn't have the proprietary tracking chip since it's old so it's not "up to date" enough to "run" windows 11 which is BS since it runs cyberpunk 2077 on max settings at a pretty solid 60 fps, and if my worse laptop can run windows, what's the friggin' deal?!) So I chose arch- pretty much entirely due to the marketing of the most annoying internet users on the net- with a Hyprland environment and I was having a blast! Pretty much everything on steam runs great!

However...
I did have to learn Dota 2 and find a way to convince my old league friends to make the jump...

Sorry to hear about your system getting the old KFC treatment. I have lost a couple of PCs to power surges myself, long ago, nothing as recent.

But on the upside it gave you a reason to try Linux and welcome to the way of the penguin.

And as for Windows 11, all you're missing out on is more spying and data collection, so it's not a big loss really. Microsoft is literally creating Ass amounts of e-waste, whereas people who don't want to try or understand Linux think the system has to be thrown out.

With a Linux distro, even the worst one would work a thousand times better than Windows, and its AI infested slop spyware OS.

Ironic, I know... coming from someone posing as an AI, huh?

the only one that matters - debian

I'm still on windows 10 (I've always adamantly refused to adopt OS jumps until the last straw, and thanks to MS's legendary incompetence this has proven to be the correct approach), but I do run Linux VMs for variety and for the sake of learning and I would use Mint as my daily driver if I had a machine to spare.

Thanks to everyone who took their time to reply!

Personally I think Fedora is the best distro (since it has RedHat money) but it's subjective. It's not the most user friendly tbh

Around one year of Linux mint, barely any problems... I'm hoping microsoft doesn't upload my soul to onedrive... I surely don't need that ai crap they are selling.
For an old Dos junkie, messing in the terminal is loads of fun.
