Your first RPG you ever played?

I think it was Phantasy Star IV on my cousins hand me down Megadrive! We used to get them a generation late with a ton of games because it was way cheaper back in the day, it's all kind of a blur.

You're probably right. Even if someone hacked in Luigi in place of Mallow it would be a start, but pf course thst would imply changing a lot of text, too.

SMRPG is one of the few games that use pre rendered sprites tyat actually looks good, IMO.
I absolutely love the pre-rendered look of SMRPG, it has aged surprisingly well unlike some other titles that did similar stuff. I wouldn't mind pre-rendered visuals being back in vogue...

That's hard to say. I probably don't even remember the first one I played, as I had no idea if what I played was even an RPG. Maybe Sword of Sodan on the Genesis. I still own that game, despite its obvious flaws. The first one I remember actually getting into was FF8.

I'm not sure if Temple of Apshai Trilogy on the C64 would count, or if Pirates! would count? So I'll say Might and Magic II on C64. My feeble kid brain could not understand the concept of building a team, so I'd start and get slaughtered by kobolds or whatever almost immediately, so I didn't play it much.

On console, I watched a friend play some Final Fantasy, but the first one I played myself was Phantasy Star II and that was a blast. Still love the presentation of that series pre-PSO2.

That's an easy one for me, Pokemon Red. Although my memory its kind of blurry I believe that it might have even been the first videogame I ever owned. I didn't even related Pokemon with the concept of RPGs as a kid, for me Pokemon was just Pokemon.

Pokemon Yellow on the Game Boy Color, its what seriously got me into RPGs.
I realize Pokemon is a bit of a standard one lol.
To be fair, Pokemon turned into something massive so fast that it's no surprise that many of us got into the genre without even knowing about RPGs in first place.

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest.

Say what you will of the story or gameplay, but the game had amazing music.
Ohh nice, Mystic Quest it's kind of special to me becuase it was the Final Fantasy that made me want to play more of the series, I didn't finshed it but I might give it a shot sometime. I also think that it's a good option to recomend to someone who wants to play an RPG for the first time since its easy to learn how to play and progress.

Not yet, but I might give it a shot sometime on my Miyoo Mini+.
Yo, I'm a MM+ owner too! Crystalis is an amazing title that I didn't expect being mentioned here since it's kind of a hidden gem in my circle. I've heard that the GBC versión has some improvements to make the gameplay more dynamic wich sounds fun to try.

I can't remember which one I played first but it was definitely either Pokemon Red or Silver, but those were games my older siblings had and I didn't get too far because I couldn't read.

But I think the first JRPG I ever sought out on my own and wanted to play was Dragon Quest VIII after trying it on a PSM demo disc. I didn't know who Akira Toriyama was at the time but I immediately recognized the Dragon Ball art style and begged my mom to get it for me for Christmas that year. She even got me the strategy guide too which helped a lot. ☺️

Chrono Trigger on the SNES. I was like 6 or 7, and this was before I knew English very well, so I never got far... Since then, today it might be one of my most replayed games ever, every version and port included. It was so mind blowing getting that secret ending
where you get to walk around and talk with the developers. Dunno why, but this quote by Masato Kato is something that's still on my mind to this day. There's something so hopeful yet so melancholic about it.

Getting the feeling I'm the only old man here.

My first RPG was Akalabeth: World of Doom.
i heard about this one the other day as part of an Ultima retrospective. that's pretty crazy and awesome that you got to play one of the first building blocks to the RPG genre.
