Your first RPG you ever played?

Chrono cross , to this day I listen to its ost to relax, such a gem, a shame ppl bash for it loose connection to Chrono trigger (I understand why thou)
Being one of my favorite games, I understand how it feels to have to deal with people who don't give it a chance. If I had to say something to them, it would be this; Don't go into it like it's the new Chrono Trigger. Play it as if it were a brand new game that had nothing to do with the series, as if it were it's own standalone game.

Hurts me deep when people have anything bad to say about this masterpiece of a game; it's a trippy, emotional out-of-body experience, a mental breakdown and inner discovery of the state of enlightenment all at once. There's nothing else even remotely like it, and the music sets the tone for every moment perfectly.

totally agreed, and the island setting helps it create that unique vibe that the game has , truly a worthwhile experience, with such a robust pool of characthers it almost guarantee to have a custom party composition that cater to your preferences be aesthetically pleasing or gameplay oriented

The first I ever played (not beat, but played) was Dragon Warrior (aka Dragon Quest 1) on NES when I was very young. I only remember not knowing what to do because I was a little kid and didn't really understand gameplay mechanics more complex then running and jumping.

The first one I beat was Pokemon Blue, which I got the year it came out.

i asked one of my friends at school what Final Fantasy 7 was like
it had just gone Platinum and it was only $30 so i could afford it with my pocket money
he said it was dumb, and every time you touch the walls you have to fight monsters 🤷
well i didn't listen to him & brought it anyway and dont regret it

Very much agreed, though I do have a slight bias because I played CC before CT. I just played through CC for the first time in like 20 years a few months ago and I have a newfound appreciation for it. I've always loved the game, but something about it super resonated with me this time. I guess it's probably all the changes I've gone through since I was a teen way back when. I also got the true ending for the first time! I was always content with just murderizing the Time Devourer when I was younger, but I wanted to go for the gold this time. I liked the sentiment and things said during the true ending, but it was kinda lame that it was just text over a static image of the world. Still beats the other ending by miles though. x)

You mean there's a bias I can get behind? Incredible.

I suppose when you get older and more mature, you're able to comprehend the deeper aspects of the story elements quite a bit further than the mind of a young teenager.

The weight of the entire situation becomes much more apparent when you are more familiar with the terminology in use, the concepts being discussed and presented, and the storytelling elements at work; all of which come together in this fascinating, immersive and interactive story.

I love it. I once spent an entire month doing nothing but playing Chrono Cross from the time I got up to the time I went to sleep, but. I often stayed up for 3 days at a time to get through the game as much as I could, squeezing every bit of enjoyment from the game that I was able.

Oddly, I still have more of the script from FF7 memorized; a game I've only beaten once or twice. 😅

Edit: The same goes for Symphonia.

Exactly. I don't think I was a (entirely) stupid teen, but there was so much about the plot that I didn't think about in the past. Having played CT several times since then also made me appreciate all the references and plot points regarding it. I suppose I can see why CT fans take issue with how things were handled, but I didn't mind it at all. It was an interesting and unique way to continue the story. Not the happy ending that everyone probably wanted, but sometimes that's just how shit goes.

Haha, oh wow. I've beaten CC quite a few times, but I've never gone that far. x) Nothing wrong with that though! Time enjoyed is not time wasted, or however the quote goes.

Good thing there's Crimson Echoes. x)

I haven't played Flames of Eternity yet, but I intend to; last attempt I was gonna do a play-by-playthrough, getting through both simultaneously to discover what differences they have, and what they share in common.

I was starting on the same thing with the original US translation and the fan-translation of Act-Raiser, but my phone died shortly into it (I think it was like a few days), so I didn't get far. 😅

Pokemon Blue, as typical as that is for people my age. My first console RPG was The Legend of Dragoon though the furthest I had ever made was one of the snowy areas on disc 3, which it was I can't remember. I did beat it at some point in middle school a few years later though and loved every second of it!

The first RPG I ever /beat/ was Final Fantasy 7 with my uncle. He had come over to babysit me while my parents were out of town one weekend shortly after a family emergency. I was excited to show him since we played a lot of games together and I had only recently gotten both the game and the strategy guide, but he took one look and called it "gay bullshit". I insisted he let me show him though and after enough harassment and a compromise co-op playthrough of Twisted Metal 2, he let me pop in the first disc. He was so captured by the opening cinematic and reactor bombing segment that it was all we did for the entire week he stayed over for. We took shifts sleeping and the PS1 was on almost the entire time. By the end we had done nearly everything there was to do besides defeat Ruby and Emerald weapon.

Good times :)

I have never heard of either of those. I'll have to give them a looksie at some point, I'm always up for a good hack.

I'd really love to chat about this more outside of the forums if you're willing; I'm huge into ROMhacks (hence why I'm here 😅) and I can share files easier through Discord if you've got it. I have many ROMhacks and we have much to discuss.

First RPG for me was Dragon Quest on NES. I went into it blind, thinking it would play like Zelda. I remember mashing the "attack" button because I thought that would increase the damage done, not knowing that RPGs involve RNG. Funny that Pokémon playing kids would later do the same thing I did to make pokéballs work.
