It was in those Bootleg DVD's with NES games, the usual 47109345093184690314609126 in 1, it was none other than Dragon Quest 2, being a bootleg obviously it was in Japanese, so i couldn't even leave the first continent, also it lacked sound

Ok but seriously now, it was Pokemon Yellow/Red/Blue (yeah I my cartridge had all of those at once). But the first time I really felt it was with N64 Paper Mario.

The first RPG I can remember playing was FF3/6 on the SNES. I loved it so much it lead me to seek out FF2/4 and then Chrono Trigger.

For Action RPG, I guess you could say Legend of Zelda and Crystalias on the NES. Ah, good times.

technicaly diablo 2, but so briefly that later when i got diablo 1 (first rpg i properly played) i couldn't tell the difference and kept trying to shove scrolls in spellbooks and couldn't wait to get a glowy sword with a gemstone in it... never happened but i ain't complaining cause diablo 1 is the better game overall

Crystalis is a freaking good game, terribly overlooked. Have you played the Game Boy Color version?

Not yet, but I might give it a shot sometime on my Miyoo Mini+.

Great, trust me you won't regret it. It's one of the highlights of the console, along with the equally surprisingly good DQ3 port for it.

It looks so faithful!

About the NES version, I like the graphics, the music and the fact that it has real time combat, but sadly the game just didn't click with me.

It has some awesome remixes thought.

Earthbound! More recently I've been playing Metal Saga for PS2 and if anyone wants enjoy a great game I'd say try it right now. I can't believe I've never played this before.

The game might not click with everyone, admittedly. But to me it has a similar allure to that of the earlier Ys entries, particularly the first two titles. I kind of wish nu-SNK would revisit it and make a new entry, there's definitely a market for modern sequels to retro titles, like Gimmick 2 which came out not long ago.

It is easy to see a lot of love went into SMRPG. I love it, but would love it more if:

- It had Wegee in Mallow's place (keep the skills, make him a mage)

You know, I always wondered why they never made a direct sequel to it, I understand that Paper Mario began as such but that just morphed into something else. I assume that Nintendo breaking ties with Square had something to do with it. We might get one for Switch 2 now that there was a remake...

Super Mario RPG on the SNES. Very unique game because it was developed by Squaresoft and uses early pre-rendered 3D instead of pixel art plus mixes some platformer elements while still playing mostly like a classic jrpg at its core. Possibly my favorite SNES game of all time.

You're probably right. Even if someone hacked in Luigi in place of Mallow it would be a start, but pf course thst would imply changing a lot of text, too.

SMRPG is one of the few games that use pre rendered sprites tyat actually looks good, IMO.

My first ever RPG was the first Dragon Warrior on the NES. Technically it could be Adventure for the Atari 2600 but it only gets the inclusion in the RPG genre retroactively.

I absolutely obsessed over it, played it WAY more than FF1.
