This looks really fun actually, and I've never heard of it. Thanks!

The only translation at this point I can think of that I'd wish for is
Star Ocean: Blue Sphere
because it continues with the characters from Star Ocean 2 and I love that game.
There's an incomplete translation but apparently its missing a lot.

Ever since I first played and finished the original 1996 Sakura Wars, I've been excited to see the other games get fan translations (especially 3 since it looks really interesting).
Thankfully, the fan translation patch for Sakura Wars 2 is said to be pretty much finished, just needing some polish before it gets a public release, so I am absolutely looking forward to that!

I have been waiting for a Improved Controls & Re-translation + Map (Hack) of Castlevania 2. Come to find out, the improved controls patch is mainly compatible with "Re-translation + Map" patches older than 2020. One user discovered that the "Re-translation + Map" guy has a website with a menu that lets you build a custom patch. All I had to do was build the correct patch for the "Improved Controls."

And that is the true story of how I got a Castlevania II English Re-translation +Map + Improved Controls for Christmas. I would love to upload it, but I can't just do that (and for good reasons).

Nice thread! I'd love to see:

Legend of Xanadu (PCE)
Legend of Xanadu 2 (PCE)

Far East of Eden 2 Manji Maru (PCE)
Far East of Eden Fuun Kabuki Den (PCE)
Far East of Eden Daiyon no Mokushiroku (SAT)

TBH generally more PCE games would be cool as there was such a big JPN only library. The Far East of Eden Ziria ENG patch was a fantastic effort!

Soooo much RPG goodness on PCE! Dragon Slayer FOREVER! There are just so many Gems and Diamonds scattered about. Mesen support for PC Engine has gotten so much better. If only Exodus would support Sega CD, then we would get some CD treasures as well. Lots of classic Japanese PC exclusives (MSX, 68000, etc.) made their way to PCE and Sega CD (sometimes in strange ways).

Three games that I wish I could find a translation for and I pray one day do. Either the Psx or psp remake for the first Growlanser just to complete the series. The sega cd shadowrun game because it looks like it would be a really good playthrough. Finally tales of destiny 2 because the first one both psx and ps2 remake are still my favorite story from the Tales series.

I'm curious what the improved controls do.

I use this patch along with Re-translation+Map and I really like it.
It makes the false floors and breakable blocks look slightly different. I use the more subtle option so they don't stand out very much and you still really have to be paying attention, but you dont have to throw your holy water everywhere constantly to avoid false floors.

I use this one. It is the same as the "improved controls" patch for 1 & 3.
  • Control x-velocity in mid-air while jumping (including jump-attacking).
  • (Optional) When releasing the jump button, immediately start falling; this allows small hops.
  • After being knocked back, the player regains control after a split second and can angle their fall.
  • When walking off an edge, the player retains control instead of dropping straight down.
  • The player can jump off of stairs at any point in the climb (still impossible to land on stairs).
  • If the player is struck by an enemy while climbing stairs, they will not be knocked off the stairs.
  • Simon blinks rapidly after getting hit, as in Castlevania 1 and 3.
Just go here and make a "translation + map" patch with program version 2.12.0.1, cartridge type set to MMC1, and "Additional functions on stairs" set to no. Then you can safely apply the "improved controls" patch to make Castlevania 1 - 3 consistent.

This works with rom: "Castlevania II - Simon's Quest (U) [!].nes Verified good dump" (CRC: A9C2C503)
I just simply used the rom patcher provided by Romhacking.net.

I feel that way about the 2001 Game Boy Color remake of "The Black Onyx." Sure, there's Super Black Onyx (made in full english) on the NES, but the Game Boy Color has 8 background color palettes vs. the NES's 4. I am actually very surprised that Super Black Onyx isn't on retrogametalk?.?.?. It is Etrian Odyssey before there was an Etrian Odyssey! It is the game that birthed Faxanadu (and later Dark Souls). Heck, it was the inspiration for the first Zelda and the root of what later became The Elder Scrolls (and yes, the game does hold up).

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Sakura Wars. I watched cutscenes on youtube, watched the anime, listened to songs (at some point I had the theme song memorized), played So Long My Love and the reboot, watched stage show performances, and mourned the closing of the themed cafes. So when the Saturn translation finally came out, I was over the moon. I'm now continuing the cycle waiting for the second game to get translated.

I came into this thread to say "Princess Crown" as I'd heard of the tale of this translation being over a decade in the works but never being released. But apparently, I wasn't paying enough attention, as someone else has picked up the work, and it's already mostly playable! This is amazing, and I'm downloading it immediately.

Now, for the one I actually waited anxiously for, and actually played: the Project Nemo translation of the JP Ace Combat 3 version, with all 5 endings and anime cutscenes. I was absolutely ECSTATIC when that came out and I played 4 endings in a row. Then, a couple years ago, ANOTHER team re-worked on another translation, better integrated into the game and fixing some bugs. I have yet to try that one.

Hello to all the nerds around here.
I am mainly referring to the golden era of romhacking and the dawn of translation projects, when some legendary translation groups such as DeJap, RPGONE, j2e, RPGe and Aeon Genesis, and others more or less important (and today often forgotten), dedicated heart and soul into romhacking, especially of snes. Of course, you can also mention the most recent projects, but I am especially curious about the first translation projects, dating back to the late nineties and early 2000s. Ahhh... so many memories! What anxious expectations! It seems like only yesterday, and I'm still waiting for those damn promised translations of Albert Odyssey (snes) or Lady Stalker (snes) which will never be finished, alas.

Without digressing, here is my list of the translations that I awaited with greatest trepidation and that did not disappoint my expectations;
1) NES: Final Fantasy 3, Radia Senki, Captain Tsubasa 2, Villgust, Sweet Home, Just Breed;
2) SNES: Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales Phantasia, Star Ocean, Tactis Ogre, Mystic Ark, SRW3, Dragon Quest IV and VI;
3) MD: Monster World IV, King Colossus, Langrisser 2, Rent a Hero;
4) PCE-CD: YS IV, Xak 3, Castlevania, Yuna 1/2;
5) PSX; Policenauts, Langrisser IV, Bloody Bride, SRW Alpha-G, Tear Ring Saga;
6) NDS: Tales Innocente, Nanashi no Game 1/2, Saga 3, Conan & Kindaichi, Okaeri! Chibi Robo, Tinglee Balloon Trip,
7) PC: Fate Stay Night, Castle Fantasia 2, Utawarerumono, Men at Work 2, Saya no Uta, Remember11, Umineko.

I'll stop here for now. Now let's hear your choices and your most poignant memories about this topic.
Finally, tell me the title of a game whose translation seemed almost finished and ready for release, but which instead was abandoned or lost for some elusive reason, and you are still waiting for it in vain. 😅
And then don't say anymore that I don't post interesting threads.
Come on, don't be shy, you're all welcome. LYA. 😉
Well, I'm really eager to see translation for 'Tenchu' games that are only release in Japan. If I know japanese language then I'll make it myself.
