What makes you say fuck I am Old ?

Whenever my partner reminds me that she is exactly one year younger than me. Or when I'm asked to train some kids like I'm their sensei. Or every time that my back hurts... You know, I could keep at this all day, but I should probably stop.

My knees.

Or more pop-culturally relevant - having to assert to young colleagues that movies from the 70s and 80s are actually in colour and widescreen and you can just watch them like any other movies.
Your co-worker is just dumb, most young adult people i know, have seen movies from the 80s and 70s and know they are in color. Do they think the first Star Wars is from 2007?

I guess my brain is being nostalgic. Because I have been having sudden random memories lately. For instance, I was just thinking of the lunch box I had in first grade. It was a yellow Rainbow Brite lunchbox. I found an image of it.

I also had the Rainbow Brite record player and would play Disney records on it.

In kindergarten I had a Care Bears book bag. It was a very simple design. A beige canvas bag with red trim and a Care Bear (Cheer Bear I think) on the front. It had a buckle closure. I remember it was at my grandmother's house for a long time after I was out of kindergarten. But I don't know what happened to it. She may have given it away.

The closest I could find is this. There must have been several designs with different Care Bears on them.

All this cool retro stuff was new to me because I was there when it came out. I even have a pic of myself on my fifth birthday with a Rainbow Brite doll and a really old fashioned red gingham dress. 😓

Well, shit.... Some of the highlights include.:
Seeing shows that are considered classics, watching them when they were new episodes.
Remembering Pong was my first introduction to a video game.
Seeing when Pacman, Donkey Kong, Pole Position, etc... WERE NEW.
Saw Tron when it was a new movie.
Experiencing the video game crash of the 80s.
Seeing the beginnings of the NES, Master System, TG-16, Genesis, SNES.
Seeing Street Fighter II make arcades popular again.

I could keep going, but it gets depressing for me.

I'm not old by any use of the word. But, knowing that American Idiot was made mere months after my birth makes me feel some sort of way, man.
I tend to dip into all sorts of things that were either before my time, or too close to my birth for me to get into coming from a family closer to the poor side of the financial spectrum. I always ask myself and try to empathize with the idea of "I wonder what these people thought when they played/listened to this at the time," and if they thought it was as special as I see it now.

The thought that old things were once considered 'just another new release' at one point. Nobody thought that American Idiot was going to live to be one of the greatest concept albums for decades to come- they just thought it was cool Green Day released a new CD. Understanding that my second-hand nostalgia, that even it is seen through hazy rose-tinted glasses...
that makes me feel old, man.

Certain video game or movie anniversaries like wtf do you mean the Spongebob Movie is over 20 years old, I remember seeing that in theaters as a kid.
That movie is already 20 Years old....

One of my oldest memories is seeing my dad playing Gran Turismo on the PlayStation 1. PlayStation 4 was my last Sony console, but to make me feel even older, now there are talks of the PlayStation 6. PS4 also dropped when I was still in highschool.

Same the Ps4 was also my last sony Console, and I don't plan on biying the Ps5 not that I could afford it anyway. It really feels weird that the Ps4 is considered last Gen for me.

I really enjoyed the PS4 too. I think it was singlehandedly the best of its gen. I feel old thinking it is last gen as it feels recent to me, but I feel even older thinking about how it dropped more than 10 years ago... ::omgdoom

This is a really sweet sentiment; I just wanted you to know that!

Growing up watching Sentai shows when I was a kid, seeing grown adults wearing spandex is a normal occurence.
Now, they're not adults wearing spandex, they're young, spry teenagers wearing spandex.

I played DOOM with just a keyboard.
The first phone I used was a rotary landline.
I went to a middle school (something which I gather isn't really a thing anywhere anymore)
I used a walkman
I was raised on music cassette tapes.

On the rare instances I speak to someone under the age of 25, I feel a real disconnect in our lived experience. They see an older person, as I see a younger one.

Being able to say I've lived in two millennia is pretty cool though.

Almost 25 now

I feel you.

  • Rotary landlines.
  • When you used to be excited when someone rang the door and now it's a "Oh no, what now?"
  • When I look at wrestlers or professional athletes and realize they are likely half my age.
  • When I say things like 'In like Flynn' or mention some actor like 'Dick Van Dyke' and no one knows what I'm saying
  • Pogs.
  • Renting games and hoping someone didn't delete my save (they did) so I can continue my progress.
  • Toys R Us and chinese buffets being the ultimate 'I am in heaven' vibe

PSX was my first console and my childhood console

Anytime I realized just how old something I've loved for years is.

Doom is 31 years old
Street Fighter 2 is 34 years old
Hell, Hatsune Miku's gonna be around for 19 years very soon.
Damn, I have to add "I was younger than Hatsune Miku when I fell in love with her" XD

i am twenty nine, i do not yet feel old
gackt
i will say - it is a little strange seeing the musicians i loved as a child, they were young, but are in their late 40s and early 50s now
seeing them with grey hair is so strange

Ironically, I'm younger than you and I feel old.

amusingly i would cite heaven and stars but the reality is that i am anemic and weak much of the time - so it is not by some south star that i feel young by spritely grace
i think my physical appearance and how i relate to younger people are factors that contribute to me not feeling as if i am old, not yet at least
