While not as deep combat as DMC it does have a parry system that's quite fun. But there's even a quote from the creator where he didn't think it was better then DMC.

Silly undermining aside, I finished the first one and had a fun time with it, but in comparison I too found other hack and slash and similar games more enjoyable. Perhaps that classic 2000s edgy nature made people love it more, but who knows.
I can't say what's 100% on my mind about the entire franchise because I'd probably make enemies on this forum, so I'll just say the appel was because teens started playing this as the first violent media they ever engaged with, so they became grown ups since then because now they engaged with gratuitous graphical violence and torture
The original had a fairly competent story with a fun setting.
The ashes of his dead wife and kids being tied to his skin, the betrayal by Ares, etc.
GOW2 had a frantic mediocre blockbuster esque story with stellar locals and grandiose bosses. I remember being so entranced with the hype that I gave the game a 10/10 under my dark_drag765 moniker on gamefaqs. Alas I look back at young me with cringe as the game is a 8 at of 10 tops. Maybe back then the technical achievement would have put it at a 9 if you were graphically obsessed.
All and all. 1=2 for all their flaws and successes. Neither touch DMC3 or Ninja Gaiden Black but that's okay. Not every game is destined to be perfect and just because some overhype a game doesn't mean I cant enjoy it.
I like how the OG God of War games managed to explore and adapt really well the greek mythology and made a very unique world through it. It also amazes me how grandiose they all felt, not many games can compare to them in that sense. Other than those two factors, I think they are very well-rounded games. They don't really stand out in many fields (at least for me) but still do everything really well. I might be a bit biased though since GOW 1 and 2 are some of the first games I got memories of (big reason why I love those two so much)
Like most Sony IPs, the appeal was less the hack and slash gameplay and more the sheer budget and "cinematic" aplomb of it all, hence the QTEs. Not to say that fans of hack and slash didn't enjoy those aspects, but you could easily see where the devs priorities lay.
Ditto with the newer GOWs, they just switched formula to better suit the time, what with the Father Sim genre being considered the most cinematic thing out there.
