Thoughts on the Odyssey?

As a fan of greek mythology, period piece epics and Christopher Nolan, this was a opening weekend watch for me. And I think it is one of the best serious adaptations of the greek myths I've ever seen on film in my lifetime. (I mean, there haven't been that many to compete with it, Troy was kind of meh and 300 was fun but not exactly accurate to the lore). I do recommend it but with some caveats. There were some bad performances, and a few castings that pulled me out of the movie (why is Spiderman in this movie and why must Zendaya be in every movie?) so it wasn't perfect but it didn't detract from the movie overall that was well scripted, edited and directed. So I'd give it 5 stars for everything except acting and casting.

It is a great movie, idk what you are talking about. It is crazy to deprive yourself of a great but flawed movie because of online ragebait discourse but maybe that is just me. Especially now when these movies are becoming rare.

i don't really care about the controversy honestly, like everything that came out nowday was full of people debate over and over before see the full thing/release, althoughts in my opinion its like every cristopher nolan movies that have good soundtrack and good directing. yes it has some flaw, but i think its not as bad people say

it's too serious, the real "odyssey" has the main guy being a trickster in a few cases and making jokes and messing with people, like i haven't seen this new movie but the preview and review videos out already show the main guy with the same depressed or angry face the whole movie.

These films set thousands of years ago are of no interest to me, and this new hype train has done nothing to change that.

Yes, Nolan movies tend to be very serious and dark. Not a lot of humor in this one. However, they do show his cleverness and trickster aspect pretty well throughout the movie.

Manufactured "controversy" made out of spite and virtue signaling for the purpose of attracting views and income out of a fundamentally flawed algorithmic program will always win over actually interacting with something on an artistic level with some people. It's alright imo :3

I will definitely be watching it. Gotta see Evil Dead Burn first, as The Odyssey will have a longer shelf life. Was considering travelling to London to see it in IMAX, but it's pretty much completely sold out at both venues, except from the few front rows, where I imagine watching the film would be like

Regarding the IMAX issue, I saw yesterday a review of the movie that was complaining that, in normal cinemas, the movie is "cut" up and down because the the movie is filmed 100% in IMAX and, in order to adapt it to other aspect ratios, they had to cut the image, and the result was sort of strange.

So if you are able to go to an IMAX cinema, it looks like the best way to enjoy it (if you can afford it).

I think I will wait to see it in streaming, because my son is now 9 months old and there is absolutely no way my partner and me can organize to go the cinema for 3 hours :P

I didn't know there was a new Evil Dead movie out but that is groovy!

And yeah never watch an IMAX movie in the front row. I did it once and had neck pains when I got out of the movie lol.

Armand Assante as Odysseus is kinda cool and I love Isabella Rosselini as Athena but sadly this version is very lacking in special effects compared to Nolan's version.

It is not very accurate to the source material, that much is true. If you are a stickler for that, then you might not like it. But not many movie versions of these long ass poems will be. These seem to be better suited for TV show mini series.

Right, like the Beowulf movie from 2007. As I recall, the poem was about 3,000 lines long. I forget exactly how long that is, but it really wasn't long enough for a full-fledged movie. The movie was good, don't get me wrong, but it would have made for a much better half hour to forty five minute show than a full-fledged movie.

Right, like the Beowulf movie from 2007. As I recall, the poem was about 3,000 lines long. I forget exactly how long that is, but it really wasn't long enough for a full-fledged movie. The movie was good, don't get me wrong, but it would have made for a much better half hour to forty five minute show than a full-fledged movie.

Plus Nolan's version is trying to be very modern warfilm and gritty, not so accurate to how greeks were in antiquity. Its an artistic choice some do not like.

But you got this part right, she actually looks like an otherworldly being.

Whereas I wouldn't look twice at Zendaya walking down the street.

Isabella always strikes my brain in this odd way, because I've seen so many of her mother's films. So there's already this uncanny feeling like she's Ingrid Bergman reborn.
