hello ! i bought a vita a few days ago on an impulse and it's currently on a boat across the ocean to get to me! i am so excited for it that i keep making myself sick. literally actually nauseous. my handheld of choice so far has been the n3ds xl, and i'm super excited to hopefully have a more compact device with real twin sticks that i can actually carry around without so much bulk. 3ds xl to me is still big enough to be traveling portable, not so much bring it to work for my lunch break portable.

all that said, i honestly bought it with essentially one game in mind, god eater burst. i love the way that game looks, and i especially love the hokey writing and va that franchise tends to lean into. and the monster hunter of it all.

so, besides the obvious monster hunter titles, what should i be looking for? what are some of the deeper cut arpgs that deserve my attention? or other games that have a similar overbearingly anime™ feel? i know basically nothing about psp and ps vita games and need to justify this credit card debt somehow. by spending more on more video games. right now i can only really play english releases or patches (working on it though)! woof.

Freedom wars, gravity rush, trails of cold steel were my goto during vita emulation days. They should play great on the console too.

as for psp - God Eater Burst 2, Valkyria Chronicles 3, Phantasy star portable 2 Infinity, Persona 3 Portable are good. All anime style but only phantasy star and god eater are action rpg

highly recommend you mod it and not buy games
i will be modding it for sure, adrenaline is the only reason i got a vita over a psp! i'm not, like, absolutely opposed to loading digital copies that way, but i am very sentimental about my physical games. i love my cartridges i love popping them in and out of my console i love the sound of my cd getting sucked up into an optical drive. so there will likely be purchases in my future lol

Note on Trails of Cold Steel specifically: those games are NOT the first ones in the overall Trails series. For the time being, you can purchase the Trails in the Sky games on the PS Store until it shuts down (or buy the FC and soon SC remakes on all modern consoles and Steam), and then Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure on Steam after you finish the Sky games. You'll thank me later if you decide to take the plunge.

/v/ keeps a recommended games list that can be good for hitting the ground running, but I have no personal recommendations since I've not done anything with the Vita, sorry.
list is useful! but it's difficult to skim thru those things to find my specific remedies for the itches i need to scratch. so i am hoping someone else already did that part.

Hate to ask here, but are the likes and other similar emojis worth anything, or are they just a show of gratitude/enjoyment of the post?
Most (or all?) of them add to your Reaction Score, but otherwise they just are for gratitude or a quick way to react without actually replying.

This is probably the closest you can get without other people chiming in, unfortunately. Looking at the list and seeing you like Monster Hunter and anime, you may care for Toukiden, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, Tales of Hearts R, maybe Disgaea 3 and 4 even though they're turn-based strategy RPGs? This is all blind guessing on my part, though.

The list is good for a start, but you'll have to start checking out gameplay videos to see if anything will be to your actual interest. Good luck!

I always recommend Lord of Arcana from the psp, it's a very good looking RPG (for a psp game) & has a good character creator.

As you say you like God eater and arpgs, see below recommended Vita titles. If you want to know about other genres or franchises, or emulation capability, let me know. Also check out the VitaDb website for latest homebrew.

God eater 1 and 2
Soul sacrifice delta
Freedom wars
Toukiden kiwami
Toukiden 2
Sword art - online hollow realization
Tokyo Xanadu
Ys viii
Ys iv

JP only God eater photography games

I know the ports aren't held in the highest regard, but I love playing Dynasty Warriors 8 and Samurai Warriors 4 on mine.

If you mod it, definitely try out some of the ports. Not even just the popular games, but some of the homebrew games especially. Really fun time.

Once again, port is not seen as good, but the Ninja Gaiden ports are great too, you just gotta overclock your system.

It's also my favorite system to play PS1 on. I went through Ghost in the Shell not too long ago, really fun shooter.

The Vita is really nice to have with how dedicated the scene is. I recommend Zealous Chuck on youtube. His main focus is on the Vita, he's where I get all my news.

i like this one 😊

I gotta say, Vita is a major blind spot for me.
I dont think I've ever even seen one irl.
More importantly (for me), it isnt easily emulated yet.

Sorry, not helpful I know. But I'm interested to see what people suggest in this thread.

Just asking, what model do you buy? If it's the fat OLED model, be prepared for the inevitable GPU crashes. If it's the slim model, you are safe.

There's a steady homebrew scene for Vita, porting games that weren't released for it mainly Android games and older titles. It's a decent emulation device too.

Adrenaline just recently got updated to support compressed PSP CSO files and miscellaneous improvements. It's only running in native res though albeit it came with shaders to smooth out the image.

this plays much better either on PC or PS4/XBone
games very gorgeous on maxed out graphics.

games that are ABSOLUTELY only on vita that i know of:
--Muramasa rebirth
--Tales of Hearts R (if you like action JRPGs this is good)
--tales of innocence R
--Phantasy star nova
--uncharted golden abyss
--soul sacrifice
--little deviants (built for Vita basically, touch controls and all)

the one i can most recommend is chaos rings 3
stands out a lot one of the best JRPGs i've played (like top 10, easy)
think persona gameplay with a more portable and very quickly played quests.
i spent past 100 huors on chaos rings 3 on my phone (and lost ALL my save data during transfer to a newer phone lost my saves)
all 4 of them are english translated. (1,2,3,omega) for vita
while they are all "mobile games" they still play quite well.

if you want PSP games there's so much games there that are quite good
--street fighter alpha 3 max is the best version of that game, the most content and modes and playable characters (like ingrid)
--DJmax portable games, if you like rhythm games.
--Ridge Racer 1 and 2
--Persona 3 portable (MY favorite way to play P3 even AFTER P3 reload, especially since the female protag is missing on reload, and it plays MUCH faster through the story than reload)
--FF tactics the lions war (the remaster doesn't have ANY of the PSP versions content btw, so this is the definitive version still)
--FF Dissidia Duodecium (the 2nd game), idk every dissidia after this sucked to me, still very fun on psp.
--Phantasy star portable 2 infinity (this has an english patch, infinity adds a LOT to base portable 2 btw)
--Castlevania Dracula X chronicles (a 3d graphics remake of Rondo of blood, but ALSO has symphony of the night, and old (turbogrpahx) Rondo of blood)
--tales of phantasia X (cross) which has a full english translation of the phantasia part (not the other mode, narakiri dungeon X thats being worked on still)
--Final fantasy 1 and 2,
the best versions of FF1 and 2 out there, do not play pixel remaster, psp FF1 has about 5 extra dungeons with about 100 floors and about 30 more boss fights. GBA content included too. FF2 has soul of rebirth mode which is only available on GBA or PSP, again not in pixel remaster.
god i hate pixel remaster FF so much!

Had a phat for 12 years, over locked for at least 4. Not a single issue with the GPU.

I got the 2000 slim model! if I'm being honest it's because it has a god eater themed shell, but I also keep telling myself that it's smarter not to buy a secondhand OLED display. my last phone's display gave me just six years (of insanely heavy daily use) before the burn-in became too noticeable to shrug off. and that scares me.

this list is an actual godsend thank you so much ;u; fft is one of those things i've been telling myself i'm gonna totally love... eventually. so i am excited to have a very good reason to finally play it !!

I bought a vita slim back in 2015, I had to sell it circa 2023 for economic reasons but I had a great time with it, it's an underrated console with a good catalog of games, you can easily jailbreak a vita and get all the good stuff, PSP games, PS1 games, emulators through retroarch, that little thing is capable of many things, among the good underappreciated games of the vita I highly recommend soul sacrifice, Gravity Rush and Tearaway

Trade it in for a PSP so you can play Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. One of the things that dissuaded me from buying a Vita was that this game is incompatible.

Like other people have said, look into modding it.

what are some of the deeper cut arpgs that deserve my attention? or other games that have a similar overbearingly anime™ feel?
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
Vallyria Chronicles Revolution
Berserk and the Band of the Hawk
Akiba's Strip: Undead & Undressed
Final Fantasy Type-0
Tokyo Xanadu

Other worthy games to get:

- Persona 4 Golden
- Persona 3 Portable
- Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
- Mortal Kombat
- Uncharted: Golden Abyss
- Killzone: Mercenary
- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

I am 99.9% sure portable ops works on vita
