I think DS and Wii were fine but I legitimately though that Super Mario 3D Land and World both basically replaced NSMB as it was a new yet similar formula.Yeah, I understand, they reused the same formula for like almost 20 years after NSMB first released and it got a bit stale. Glad they changed up with Wonder.
NSMB Wii was because the return of Mario couldn't just be in handhelds (although usually handheld was the last bastion of 2D games back when home console had little to no 2D around the late PSX and PS2 era) and having 4 players at the same time on screen was a new gimmick. It definitely got old real quick, especially when the NSMB Wii released. They didn't change a lot, other than giving them a prettier look and some new power ups
Wonder is goated though

Hmm, makes sense. I always viewed them more as separate things to the NSMB series games, but it is true they were more successful than New Super Mario Bros U.I think DS and Wii were fine but I legitimately though that Super Mario 3D Land and World both basically replaced NSMB as it was a new yet similar formula.
In fact 3D Land was to me the 3rd NSMB game until they announced 2 and U. They even had the whole "collect 3 giant coins to unlock stuff/go further" thing that NSMB was about.

Yeah, me too, they're really fun games.Yep.
I would still like to see a third game in that style.
Yeah the gimmicks and all that space definitely makes it feel dull and empty. I think the first one is just that good for an handheld and they're having a hard time to adapt it as a main console gameI think DS and Wii were fine but I legitimately though that Super Mario 3D Land and World both basically replaced NSMB as it was a new yet similar formula.

Only big downside is that playing the game in solo basically meant having huge empty spaces built with 4 players in mind.
In fact NSMB DS was planned to have two players at the same time in coop but ultimately got relegated to versus multiplayer (which is considered as one of the best mode in any mainline Mario game). The game had some unique gimmicks and sections made for a strictly single player game which is why it felt a bit duller in Wii.
I totally understand the nostalgia regarding Wii which was fairly more popular than DS but this being the main base for U and 2 when these could've had more differences just wasn't great.
This video basically sums it well despite how the rest of the series kinda retroactively made people's perception of the first game less good.
As for Wonders I'm surprised they didn't make an update or sequel to it but I'd love to see a Wonders style game set in the actual Mushroom Kingdom.

I've found some old videos talking about NSMB DS circa 2005
Even if it's officially not a Mario game in mind I love it since the GBA version.I've loved Mario since I started gaming waaay back. I got the most attached to SMB2, something about the quirkiness and unique atmosphere really appealed to me, and I loved being able to pick different characters.
Sunshine deserved a fully fledged remake that corrected the issues with it.That said, my favorite in the series is Sunshine. I know that's not an overly popular opinion, but that game is pure heaven to me.
It’s the one I hear the most good things about.I'll always defend the first NSMB despite the bad reputation the New series got over the decades

I'd say got for it! I didn't get to play it as a kid but it's bringing me unexpected amounts of joy as an adult. And the music is fireI’ve also been thinking of doing a more modern playthrough of Super Mario Sunshine.
Have you ever tried Mario & Luigi?WAHOOO!!!
Whenever I feel like I need a comfort game, I always run to Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64, and one of the Mario Karts. But I’m always eager to try games I never have before!
Currently playing Super Paper Mario on Wii! Slowly, but it’s a fun game! Loaned to me by my beloved partner~
I’ve also been thinking of doing a more modern playthrough of Super Mario Sunshine. I beat the game, but over a period of YEARS and that was when I was a kid. I’ve also been wanting to play NSMB Wii, but it’s so squished on my CRT! Niche collector problems, I’m sure.
My baby…Have you ever tried Mario & Luigi?
Bro, you're missing out!My baby…
Mario and Luigi hurts. It’s the formative version of the Mushroom Kingdom’s characters for me, being the version of the Mario world I use as the basis in my head. I loved BIS and Dream Team, but then… Paper Jam.
I heard many mixed things, a lot of negative things, on Brothership, but I’ve been meaning to get around to it. I WANT to love that game so badly. I miss Mario and Luigi. I also want to play the games I missed (Superstar Saga and Partners in Time) at some point! I watched a playthrough of Partners in Time, but that’s not the same thing as playing it.
I've been thinking of replaying Sunshine and NSMB Wii someday.Whenever I feel like I need a comfort game, I always run to Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64, and one of the Mario Karts. But I’m always eager to try games I never have before!

…so… uh… we all know Fawful is in Partners in Time, right?Bro, you're missing out!
I'd recommend starting with Superstar Saga since Partners in time features a returning character from that game.
NSMB Wii's biggest issue is how skill disparity makes it harder to play and how you can still throw people in the void.I have horrible, haunting memories of playing NSMB Wii with my friend and his little brother. He would run ahead like an jerk, trying to make his little brother so frustrated that he would give up and go away, but the six year old just kept playing, dying, crying, and being mad. I was trapped in the middle, because I agreed the brother was bad at the game, but I didn’t want to see him fail and be upset! So I just kept trying to help the little brother out as my friend just kept jetting ahead.
Don’t be too upset. My friend was 15 at the time, I was 14, and the kid was 6. That kid is now 13 and is going through his “edgy teenage suburban white boy phase”. I pray for his soul that he doesn’t do anything TOO cringeworthy that he regrets later when he grows up.
My friend is now an accountant. And has a wife. He still runs ahead in NSMB Wii. Pain.
Also when you have to balance a fifteen year old and a six year old fighting… when you’re 14.NSMB Wii's biggest issue is how skill disparity makes it harder to play and how you can still throw people in the void.
That's why I mostly spent my time solo-ing the game but then you notice that the level design is too wide for SP play. Also when you have to balance a fifteen year old and a six year old fighting… when you’re 14.
