Yeah, I understand, they reused the same formula for like almost 20 years after NSMB first released and it got a bit stale. Glad they changed up with Wonder.
I think DS and Wii were fine but I legitimately though that Super Mario 3D Land and World both basically replaced NSMB as it was a new yet similar formula.

In fact 3D Land was to me the 3rd NSMB game until they announced 2 and U. They even had the whole "collect 3 giant coins to unlock stuff/go further" thing that NSMB was about.

It definitely got old real quick, especially when the NSMB Wii released. They didn't change a lot, other than giving them a prettier look and some new power ups

Wonder is goated though

NSMB Wii was because the return of Mario couldn't just be in handhelds (although usually handheld was the last bastion of 2D games back when home console had little to no 2D around the late PSX and PS2 era) and having 4 players at the same time on screen was a new gimmick.

Only big downside is that playing the game in solo basically meant having huge empty spaces built with 4 players in mind.

In fact NSMB DS was planned to have two players at the same time in coop but ultimately got relegated to versus multiplayer (which is considered as one of the best mode in any mainline Mario game). The game had some unique gimmicks and sections made for a strictly single player game which is why it felt a bit duller in Wii.

I totally understand the nostalgia regarding Wii which was fairly more popular than DS but this being the main base for U and 2 when these could've had more differences just wasn't great.

This video basically sums it well despite how the rest of the series kinda retroactively made people's perception of the first game less good.

As for Wonders I'm surprised they didn't make an update or sequel to it but I'd love to see a Wonders style game set in the actual Mushroom Kingdom.

I've found some old videos talking about NSMB DS circa 2005

Hmm, makes sense. I always viewed them more as separate things to the NSMB series games, but it is true they were more successful than New Super Mario Bros U.

I just finished replaying Bowser's Fury. That was a fun little time. Took me only two decent play sessions to 100% it.

Yeah the gimmicks and all that space definitely makes it feel dull and empty. I think the first one is just that good for an handheld and they're having a hard time to adapt it as a main console game

I've loved Mario since I started gaming waaay back. I got the most attached to SMB2, something about the quirkiness and unique atmosphere really appealed to me, and I loved being able to pick different characters. SMB3 is just a phenomenal game and I also had endless fun with that. Had I owned a SNES, my most played of the 2D era would have easily been SMW, since whenever I did get to play it I absolutely loved it... same goes for Yoshi's Island. As a side note, Yoshi's Story is really fun too... just super short and almost frustratingly easy.

Super Mario 64, though... that's where it really became special. It probably helps that the Nintendo 64 is so overwhelmingly my favorite gaming console with my favorite gaming memories, but everything about SM64 is just fantastic.

That said, my favorite in the series is Sunshine. I know that's not an overly popular opinion, but that game is pure heaven to me.

So far, the only Mario games I've are the spinoffs (Mario And Luigi, Super Mario RPG, Mario Kart) but I wanna try out the mainline games to see if they're fun.

Even if it's officially not a Mario game in mind I love it since the GBA version.

In a way I wish they could bring back Subcon and Wart again. I was glad to hear the character select in 3D World and I'm always happy to see Ninjis back.

Somehow Shyguys are nowadays relegated to Yoshi's Island and party games (like Birdo who's barely relevant in the mainline games).

Is that me or characters like Wario, Birdo, Daisy and others are now for party/karting games and almost ignored in the mainline Mario series? I know Wario was in 64 DS but that was like 20 years ago.

I wish we got a new 3D Yoshi and Wario game...

Sunshine deserved a fully fledged remake that corrected the issues with it.

I feel that Wonders will finally bring back non-Mushroom Kingdom regions to the franchise (I don't really count Galaxy 1&2 nor New Donk City since it was Arcade Donkey Kong's region).

I bought a Nintendo DSi 5 months ago, and it has become my main platform to play games on ever since (I don't feel like turning on my laptop and open Steam anymore). Revisiting beloved games like Hotel Dusk, TWEWY and Rhythm Heaven has been a delightful experience. I love my DSi with all of my heart.

Eventually I ended up trying the SM64 remake for the first time. To be fair, I always sucked at playing the original N64 version so, naturally, at first I expected even worse performance on my end due to the new controls but to my surprise, my experience with it hasn't been that bad. In fact, I'm loving this game more than I thought I would.

Of course, the controls are bad in comparison, but the game is still more than playable. It takes a while to get used to it, but once you do it feels great to explore the castle.
I feel like many people don't even bother with the DS version and it's a shame because it really is a very competent and decent remake and an impressive achievement for the Nintendo DS.

Hardcore fans and speedrunners will forever prefer the N64 version and I get it, but for casual players this version is highly recommended. The amount of new content is more than enough to justify a playthrough in my opinion.

Anyone else think the same?

I didn't know that SM64 DS has a lot of haters. fyi to the haters you can play as Wario, Luigi and Yoshi in the game what more can you ask for!

Is hating on this game still a thing people do? I thought we could all put our big-boy pants on, cut with the elitism, and admit that SM64DS was pretty pretty baller.
The addition of the new characters from the OG, and their different mechanics and stuff, is something I'll always be fond of. Luigi especially, the klutz he is. Can't get much better than him.

I think so. Judging by the comment section in the Glitchwave page of SM64DS I'd say people still prefer the N64 version, or at the very least they would only play the remake with a patched rom.

Edit: And yes, Luigi is definitely the best character in the game, that's for sure. Also his backflip is the coolest jump ever made.

That's actually the first SM64 I played so for many years that was the one I preferred then I played Vita with puppycam.

DUDE I KNOWWWWWWWWWW. Luigi's floatier and slippery movements have always been so much more fun to play around with. A little awkward at times, but damnit nothing can keep me from the green Italian!
But- yeah. I hope people can chill with that view already. Give this game the proper love it deserves. For a DS game, something designed to be played anywhere, it was amazing. Comparable to a console game even. Not even some 3DS games could do that. Even PSP games couldn't hold up to SM64DS's quality!

The Ds game only has one issue I really don't like....lack of analog controls. That touch screen is just weird, but they game is solid, the extra content is great, especially the new bosses and stages, and the fact you don't start as mario.....is actually done well, UNLIKE SONIC FORCES....that games is just terrible to the core.

The good thing about SM64DS is that there are people that have created patches that fix most of the issues with the controls if you are playing it on a 3DS. My only other complaint is the low-quality music which I am not sure if anyone has fixed already.

I'll always defend the first NSMB despite the bad reputation the New series got over the decades

And let's hope Doki Doki Panic and SMB2 USA will get some sort of revival in the future of the franchise

WAHOOO!!!

Whenever I feel like I need a comfort game, I always run to Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64, and one of the Mario Karts. But I’m always eager to try games I never have before!

Currently playing Super Paper Mario on Wii! Slowly, but it’s a fun game! Loaned to me by my beloved partner~

I’ve also been thinking of doing a more modern playthrough of Super Mario Sunshine. I beat the game, but over a period of YEARS and that was when I was a kid. I’ve also been wanting to play NSMB Wii, but it’s so squished on my CRT! Niche collector problems, I’m sure.

Have you ever tried Mario & Luigi?
