Sonic Megathread

I have never met anyone who thinks Sonic R's soundtrack is bad. Not even online have I seen people trash it so this is a surprise to me. Everyone I know and have seen say it is the only reason Sonic R is memorable aside from the Tails Doll

"Bad"!? Literally everyone and their grandma agrees that the soundtrack is amazing. Even Somecallmejohnny—one of the biggest Sonic fans—likes it.

My favorite track has always been "Living in the City."

Sonic R has one of the best OSTs i've heard. Reminds me a lot of the OST in Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast which is my favorite racing game.
There was someone on Twitter who actually modded one of the newer "Outrun" games (I THINK it was "Outrun 2006" but my memory is a bit fuzzy) to replace the game's music with "Sonic R's" music. It fits perfectly.

Besides, the game is already bad, and having an OST that doesn't stand out with other games in the same genre wouldn't help it either.
That is a weird argument, like saying they set out to make a bad game on purpose and thus also chose the sound track for that goal on purpose or something? I know you likely meant that is how the stars fell but still, the soundtrack is very off given what type of music Sonic had at that point. Of course, jump to something with CD quality music would be first with Sonic R, so there was no guiding principle but I am pretty sure more people agree they nailed that with Sonic Adventure and just about every game henceforth, even the "bad" sonic games have universally liked, and fitting music like 2006 and Air Riders series. Compared to that, the style and vocals are very weird choice. Vocals is not the issue even, vast majority of sonic games have vocals and even cross to pop style music, but still, Sonic R is very off in style that would be fitting to sonic game. It would not be off for a kart racing game, maybe, but still.

well, IT IS cheesy, in a very unapologetic 90s way, the kind people either love or hate and because the game wasn't overall well received it may also have soured people's view on the soundtrack back then

I wonder if it was a Nintendo game if people would treat it like they do.
I mean, Mario Sunshine for example, while being a better game than Sonic R, is still a flawed game that wouldn't be so praised if it wasn't on GameCube. But this is a different talk.

Nah, Sunshine generally rocks and it has exactly a fitting soundtrack that includes pho-acapella rendition of SMB Theme for bonus stages and so much more. Sunshine does not suck it was just seen that way at the time, as was Wind Waker. At it's time, games on GameCube were seen as sucky because they were on GameCube. Now it is has an inverse effect though generally, most nintendo GameCube games are all time hood classics in their own right. Melee, for sure is one, agree with it or not, there is like, a 20+ year old tournament scene telling their side of the story.

More like both Sunshine and Wind Waker suffered from rushed development in order to sell GameCubes and it showed. After all, Wii was a much more casual console and had all the more reasons to attract gamers ire, yet Galaxy and Twilight were overall much better received at launch.

I've never had anyone say it's bad, i have however heard plenty of people say it doesn't fit a sonic game, and that sonic R itself sucks.

I'm a big fan of sonic R's soundtrack myself.

I think Galaxy is a better game than Sunshine (that's coming from a big Sunshine fan), but Wind Waker is much better than Twilight Princess in my opinion.

Dunno what you are talking about with rushed development. You seem to forget that back in the day, short development times were a norm. You could use same logic to call the THREE fully open world 3D GTA games rush jobs that launched during the same generation, or both Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 that launched during the same generation as rush jobs because they all took at maximum 2 years to develop.

Wind Waker's negative reception was entirely because of it's cel-shaded art style and cartoony look made it look like "a kiddy game" contrasted to initial tech demo that was shown before GameCube launched. People were expecting Twilight Princess and got Wind Waker. You do not make Wind Waker after that tech demo as a rush job. You make Wind Waker because you feel there is strength in it's art style.

Super Mario Sunshine is just a 3D mario game. It has gimmicks, which is a given for something following up to Super Mario 64. At worst, it is just a fine 8/10 Mario game which might be it's biggest sin. You sell consoles with something revolutionary like Mario 64. When you already did Mario 64, you do not push as many consoles by doing it again with few sequel additions.

Of course Twilight Princess was received well on it's launch. It was exactly what the whiners on internet wanted from that tech demo. Not to mention, TP also was a GameCube Zelda, if not arguably meant for GameCube first. Then again, it is not like TP was universally loved Zelda game, that didn't get it's fair share of "shit game" assessments on internet at it's launch. Until Skyward Sword, the Wii exclusive, universally loved and best Zelda everyone loves and has nothing bad to say about.

Of course Mario Galaxy is hyped as f. It is THE Mario game on THE best selling Nintendo home console. Can't say much about it myself though. Unlike Sunshine, I never played Galaxy or it's sequel to this day.

THREE fully open world 3D GTA games rush
There is a lot of cut content because of time restraints in 3D GTAs, they are not fully realized projects. Even San Andreas's third act is unfinished, story and game design wise. Just saying

Also triforce piece hunting was garbage in Wind Waker. I know, scorching hot take

Because development time depends of the scope and vision of each game. Nintendo mostly took their time when developing games and admittedly needed more time for these two. Afaik the only 3D Zelda that had a dev time shorter than WW was Majoras and it was because they reused Ocarina's engine. With Mario, Sunshine took about the same or maybe even less time to release than Galaxy 2, which was basically an expansion pack of 1.

I'm still struggling to figure out why people think it's a bad game.

I loved it when my cousin lent it to me at age 12. I almost didn't wanna return it, I was that hooked... In fact, I even read the fucking manual (!) just to experience more of it.

not only Sonic R but the latest Sonic frontier has just such a bad soundtrack that does not fit the game. It´s not that the tunes are bad well they are not to my taste. But what makes the rely bad is they don´t fit the games at all.

That what I think.

They clearly can't feel the sunshine.
It has not brightened up their day.
