Has anyone mentioned the Sonic Classic Heroes romhack yet?
It's personally my favourite way to play through the first two Sonic games, because for me, it fixes everything wrong with those games. Most notably, it adds a save feature, gives the chaos emeralds a reason to exist on the first Sonic game (other than a slightly different ending), and gives all of the characters their Sonic 3 abilities as well as letting you swap between them on the fly.
Adding a real 3 player MP mode and the Chaotix as bonus characters (as well as the ring line from that game).

The fact you could play as a single character to keep the vanilla feel is selling it to me if I wanted to do a non-team playthrough.

As for Sonic AIR.
Meh... it could be better. Sure it's got widescreen and mod support, but that's about it. And I feel like that widescreen could be added to a romhack if someone hasn't already (there's certainly an emulator that'd support it).
Well, for emulators it would require much more work and you won't have the smooth rotations not advanced stuff. I don't recall any emulator supporting true widescreen as far as I can.

As for the mod support, from what I could tell, there weren't any worthwhile mods finished yet. You'd think someone would've added in proper co-op support, so you can go through the entire campaign in splitscreen, mixing and matching any two characters, or perhaps even adding in the levels from Sonic 1, 2, and maybe even CD and Chaotix. All for the ultimate Sonic experience!
But nope, it's just Sonic 3 with widescreen and mod support.
I personally think Sonic Delta and Sonic 3 Complete are both better. They also don't require you to complete the game to unlock basic moves like the peel-out. ¬¬
I think that the main issue is that there are custom S3C that you can only get from one site.

There's a core on Retroarch called "Genesis Plus GX Wide" which as far as I can tell, seems to support true widescreen. That's what I was referring to. But yeah, it would require quite a bit of work to hack a rom into taking advantage of it. Give it time though.

EDIT: Oh hey, someone already made a widescreen patch for Sonic 1 and 2 for it. It's called heyjoeway's widescreen patch. Cool.

I discovered as a kid that the hyper Sonic destroy-all-enemies-onscreen on S&K completely bugged out the game, so I made it my goal to see how far I could glitch it - the SRAM was reset apparently and I had to play it all over again
I still try to break games, but now I have graduated to PS2 emulation and can do so without destroying a console in the process

That's cool but honestly I'm also glad with every features added like Tails and Knux in Sonic 1 without having to launch a romhack or Sonic 2 where Tails could fly.

Oh yeah, I think the devs didn't think too much about playtesting with him. Truly an overpowered character.

I loved these videos for the sole reason it made me seek the Super Emeralds

Sonic 2 super sonic also had a few bugs here and there.

Going too fast to finish a level or being off screen could make the game totaly bug and need a reset.

Sonic unleashed is one of the most underrated Sonic games out there.

It clearly shows the lack of beta testing. But then again how many got Super Sonic early on?

Sorry sir but this is a thread focused on Classic (2D on the Genesis mainly) but yeah I guess? Maybe not in the latest years.

somewhat unpopular opinion.. but i always found Mecha sonic more impressive than Metal.

As a kid, i owned sonic & knuckles ( never got sonic CD ) and my first real try was with Knuckles.

I can remember the feeling when this bad boy started to power up on the Emerald.

Honestly I kinda agree but I've always assumed that Mecha was more on the power side of Sonic (especially the second model in 3&K) whereas Metal was more about speed (especially with his back rocket).

Metal is popular because he's been from CD and he was brought back in Heroes among other games (but imo he got milked a bit too much around Sonic 4 and Generations to the point he looks more like a boss character than a proper rival like Shadow is).

I think the confusion is also because of Silver Sonic (the mecha from Sonic 2) which is also a mecha but not the same model.

Oh and we got Mark III in SA1 which was never shown ever in the games.

But back to Classic talk: Metal Knuckles could've been an interesting character as well

I'm still curious why Tails had a Doll as his mechanised counterpart and Amy had 0 (except that one from the Mania boss in Metallic Madness).

I adore classic Sonic, but I do feel I might be the only fan of Sonic 3D Blast. :( I truly might be all there is!

Reading through the thread... I was pleasantly wrong. :)

I kinda got surprised at myself for finally enjoying 3D Blast after managing to pass some levels.

I think that some people try a game 10 minutes then let it instead of searching further.

3D Blast DX is legit a good game and it's a shame that the Traveler's Tale dev didn't have more time to program it.

Dropping some love for Sonic R. All four of its fans know what's up.
Brother, people love that game. It’s always been niche, but it’s such a unique vibe and is connected to a popular character, so its legacy has actually grown massively with time.

I say all of this as someone born six years after the original game released. Fell in love with it back when I was 10, seeing videos online. I managed to get Gems Collection back when it was KIND OF affordable and have been playing it there ever since. It’s one of those comfort games I always come back to.

Check out a channel called GameHut if you haven’t! It was ran by a main dev on the game. He shows off much of how they made the game, and even made a “Director’s Cut” on the game to try and address common criticisms.

They probably wanted to do something different for Tails. He’s a softer, fluffier character, so perhaps they felt another robot didn’t feel right.

Amy though? Dunno. Massive disrespect to Classic Amy they had back then. Like, she was around, but mainly just to fill rosters and never to be much of a character in her own right. That’s literally where her character grows from come Sonic Adventure lmao!

Did anybody mention yet the Hydrocity bug involving Super Sonic in Sonic 3 standalone? You beat act 2 as him and Sonic’s spikes go down but he keeps the pallete. You even get unique victory text for completing the act! I love that bug and I try to go for it every time I play.

I think that it's quite interesting that the cutest character in the cast back then had one of the creepiest counterpart.

Classic Amy got more love thankfully with Superstar and Origin.

I knew about the miniboss having the wrong theme unless you enable the drowning jingle.

This video shows a lot

I want to keep this thread positive. Superstars has a ton of cool ideas and designs that give us a lot to talk about. It’s interesting that, by the point of SuperStars in the timeline, Robotnik is experimenting with trying to mass produce Metal Sonic’s architecture with robots that don’t need to be based off Sonic. Makes me wonder if they’ll follow that line of thinking with the next classic game (if such a thing releases one day).

I still have the Sonic Underground plushes that were sold at Denny's for a short time back in the day.

The attached pic isn't of mine cause mine got all gross and faded over the years and lost their vibrant color. :( They're still in one piece though.

Unfortunately that's the only old bit of merch that's survived over the years. I'll take a pic later, but I have a shelf at work of a bunch of old Sonic stuff that was given to me by a friend.

I do still have my copy of Sonic 3 for the Sega Genesis that I received as a gift from my grandma when I was a kid in the 90s. It's still got all my save files from when I religiously played and beat the game with every character over and over again.

For me with Sonic 3, my favorite zone is probably Flying Battery, Lava Reef, or Death Egg. While the Knuckles part of the game has higher highs (as represented by my list) Sonic 3 standalone has far more consistent quality.

As for music, that’s like asking me what’s my favorite child. This game is my baby. Don’t do this to me.

Are Sonic squishmallows really worth the money?

Are they really worth over $4,0 or are those just scalper prices?
I found the average price range around 40 to 50 on ebay, and someone just bought Big the Cat for 49,99. No way the most recent ones aren't avaible anymore on retailer stores.
I'm not from US so I got annoyed when the only store I found the said squishmallow selling for $43,63 so I did a quick search and it seems those are the prices. For a stuffed fictional animal. Released not over a year ago.

No unless you really, really want it.
I'm comparing these to similarly sized plush, like Big Nesoberi, $40 is fine, $50 is just pushing it.
