RGT Nostalgia Society #12 - Pikmin

Last night I managed to grab the cheevo for the bad ending (unlock second landing zone and then spam "go to sunset" until day 30).

Also just got the trophy for the regular ending thanks to a save I had held on to from my previous playthrough at day 25 and 29/30 ship pieces.

But biggest ding was the "Allergic to blue" cheevo for nabbing all of the ship parts from the second location (Forest of Hope) without unlocking the blue Pikmin. Wasn't tough per se, but definitely required some unorthodox strategies. Glad to have gotten that one outta the way.

Now only have the cheevos for getting high scores in challenge mode and for beating the game with all 30 ship parts in 12 days or less...I have a feeling it's not gonna be a walk in the park for me. xD

Yeah, if the next stages of challenge mode are even harder than the first one... Not so sure I can master this one ::nervous-prinny

I'm not sure how I feel about Pikmin so far. I'm only an hour in and I'm....indifferent? I really wanna like the game, but I'm not sure it's my cuppa. Maybe I'll take a step back and read up on the game for a bit, and dive back in.

I remember feeling this type of feeling when I got into ICO before something just clicked.

I'm hoping it does so here, as I've heard nothing but good things.

How far into the game are you?
I think the game has a really big learning curve. I never owned a GameCube growing up, so even the control scheme took me hours to get to grips with. Then on top of that, the game actually poses a decent amount of time-management challenge.

I think it really clicked for me once I had unlocked all 3 colour Pikmin types.

Either way, there's no rush - We still have plenty of month left to go. :D

If you want to get in the "mood" for Pikmin, I recommend watching these two short movies. They're just so cute and funny. They were made after Pikmin 2, so there are purple and white pikmin in them.
Pikmin Short: Occupational Hazard
Pikmin Short: Treasure in a Bottle

Don't feel too disheartened, as others have said; this game does have a bit of a learning curve to it seeing as there's really not much you can compare these games to and give yourself a point of reference, it's a very original and unique series. Since it's your first time playing; the biggest tips I can give is, and counterintuitive as this may sound, don't fret and stress too much over the time limit. Take your time, allow yourself to adjust to the game and you'll quickly realise the 30-day limit is more than enough time to get everything done.

Not sure how far in you are now, but the other biggest tip is try and get the radar as soon as possible. It's in the Forest of Hope area just past where you get the yellow pikmin for the first time and gives you access to the map which will tell you where all the parts are located as well as every individual pikmin you've got on the field with you (Very useful when you've lost some and have no idea where they are). Study the layouts of the maps, plan routes accordingly and you'll be playing even more efficiently in no time.

Making some research i found about the fact the Wii version (the one i have) actually made something called "Crush glitch" more frequent, is that glitch game breaking or a simple annoyance?

It's not game breaking in the sense that it's impossible to beat the game, but it does make the game feel very frustrating and unfair at times since it's literally out of your control. Something as simple and necessary as building a bridge or killing an enemy can result in your pikmin randomly dying because of this glitch.

Oh, so it's like if your villagers on a RTS suddenly dying while gathering wood or food

Yo @X y b e r - S k u ll did you say you have a Retro Achievements account? Can you drop the link? Would be cool to keep up with your progress towards the mastery. ::coolmines
Yeah, can do

I'll be honest; Friday was the first time I logged into my RA account in a while since I couldn't get it to link with my emulators for a long time for some reason, but it's back up and working now, it's a pikmin miracle.

I'm afraid to even try the second challenge::nervous-prinny

However for any interested in more of this kind of game, there is a game called Little King's Story that's basically like Pikmin but with cutesy fantasy medieval subjects and a town building element plus RPG. It was on Wii I think and in the last couple years was re-released on PC.

Was about to add Pikmin to my Wii but it turns out I already did at some point? Never played it before but does look interesting. It's been too long since I participated in the nostalgia society. Parasite Eve definitely became a new favourite of mine and Clock Tower was the game where my CRT died like halfway through and had to perform open heart surgery on the thing just to finish 🤣. Anyway, I'll try and start it up soon, for real this time.

This is the result of trying to bomb the giant skeeter thing in the Navel.
It stepped on a group of about 10 Yellers with bombs and the explosion from them dying killed all the Yellers on the leg already. I think it was about 40 little lives lost in the line of duty.

Thankfully I have plenty of Reddins to come and finish the job those incompetent Yellers couldn't, and they did it swiftly with minimal losses AND got the Rocket Piece back with 0 seconds left on the clock.

Took me long enough, but I'm finally participating!

I'm currently on Day 7 of my second playthrough. My first one got to Day 10 before I realized there's no way I'm beating this game blind, so I'm now using the Nintendo Power guide. Honestly, my biggest problem in the game is keeping my Pikmin alive. I lose them a lot from my own carelessness and their tendency to get stuck in the terrain.

I really like Olimar's inner monologue and log entries. They give him a lot of personality and make the game feel like an adventure novel. I also like how the game gives bits and pieces of what Hocotate is like in a natural and immersive way.

I'm maybe 8 days in so far, and I'd have to agree, I think it opens up a bit more when the lil blue Pikmin join up. I have a decent amount of ship parts, maybe 6 to 8? And the radar definitely helps, now that I'm in The Forest Navel.

I also think consulting a guide, when I'm stuck might also be my best move, as RTS and just puzzle/strategy games aren't really my strong point.

I'm at the moment just dabbling in and out of Pikmin. I'm in the middle of space wandering in Starfield and slamming people around in WWE 26. I don't wanna force the game like I did on my first attempt, when I was burned out and catching up on sleep from my job. I want it to feel like, yeah Pikmin sounds good for a few hours today.

I think anyone can finish this game on their first go. As you get towards the end Olimar constantly restates that you don't need every ship part to lift off, and some are completely optional at all. I think if you get 25 you can escape and that's easy enough to do with normal play. There'll be days where you get none but also days where you get 2 or more even.
The biggest skill you develop and have to test in this game is efficient work assignment. If you can figure out it's smart to do something like put 30 Pikmin to work building a bridge over here that takes a few minutes, while getting 20 to carry a ship part over there that takes a while, and then using 40 to fight things to clear the way or build up some seeds.
That and forward thinking, where you might spend a day just clearing paths and getting ready for the next day when you'll make all the big moves.

Pupin Tip! For tricky traversal, If you move the C-Stick back and forth the direction you're going it'll clump the Pikmin up around you in a much tighter formation. Just practice in an open area keeping them all close by going back and forth in a semi-slow rhythm. Helps a lot with chokepoints like bridges, specially around water.

Bye Bye Pikkies! I'm off to see the Good Ending!

Took the bite, chose the Wii version because you can rewind days if you feel you blew it, that and i feel the pointer controls are better for aiming throws and marches

I am already 9 days and parts deep into the journey, having some trouble with the Forest of Hope

The last piece there is guarded by a trio of underground birds, once i step there these cretins quickly eat all my pikmins with no chance to retrieve them, i tried to plant bombs but they either shrug them or the yellow pikmin doesn't drop them, any tips?

I was struggle with the birds too, until I found out the Pikmin do a lot more damage if you can manage to get them to latch on to it's head. I would just stand in front right when it popped out of the ground and start chucking.

Oh, guess i never tried that, i have some experience grabbing nectar from the flying thingies, so i could try that

Speaking of nectar, what it means when the pikmin become flowered? they are faster and stronger or is just cosmetic?
