RGT Nostalgia Society #12 - Pikmin

Oh, guess i never tried that, i have some experience grabbing nectar from the flying thingies, so i could try that

Speaking of nectar, what it means when the pikmin become flowered? they are faster and stronger or is just cosmetic?
Yeah, basically when pikmin get flowered their speed (Walking, attacking and carrying) increase as well as their strength.

They don't tell you in game either (You have to read the manual for this info), but the pikmin have secondary abilities as well. Yellows are the most obvious (Higher throwing arc and can handle bomb rocks), but reds are immune to fire and have a 1.5x attack boost and blues can travel in water and can also rescue red or yellows that are drowning (I'll be honest this one isn't that useful, but sometimes it has its moments lol).

Starting my playthrough! My first play of this game was a handful of years ago, and I played in tandem with my lover. We would pass the controller back and forth every day in game. Now I can't lean on her natural skill at this game to get me through this time...

Managed to get all 30 parts on my first try. ::coolstafy
I was a little worried I wasn't going to have enough days, but by day 10 I started to make sure I got at least 1 ship part before the day ended. On the second last area it's easier to get two since the parts are closer together. By day 25 I had 29 parts. The last area however ended up taking me 3 days. The boss isn't hard per say, but killing him within the day is. Beat him on my second day there with just 1-2 seconds to spare, then had to spend a third day bringing the part back to the ship.

Took a while to get used to guiding the Pikmin around, and was a little frustrating when some would get stuck in a corner or fall in the water, but eventually got the hang of grouping them together and using the c stick to kind of control the spread of the pack. Game doesn't really do a good job at explaining what each coloured Pikmin does. One of the diary entries hinted at the Red Pikmin's flame resistance but had to look up that you could throw the Yellows higher since I couldn't figure out how to get one of the parts. The entries seem to change based on what you did in the day so maybe there's a similar hint in there that I missed.

Game has really tight pacing, that's the benefit of having a forced timer. Some seem to really dislike them but every game I've played that has it always turned out to be a benefit. It gives everything a sense of urgency and makes you really plan out you're actions. This game wouldn't be nearly as interesting without it. It's not that stressful though, if a day goes bad you can always just reload and try again.

Is there any special bonus for doing the challenge mode or is it just a high score type of thing?

Challenge mode is pretty much just a fun little side mode where you go for a high score. The maps have different enemy/pellet layouts, but it doesn't unlock anything extra. Can help with learning the maps and helping to teach yourself better efficiency for potential future playthroughs though.

I've always been a pretty sloppy captain. Seven losses and its only day three.

Also, man... that Forest of Hope OST. Transcendental stuff.

Oof... Didn't remember the strat for dealing with the ground birds in Forest of Hope. Lost a lotta good men today.

Those challenge mode achievements were what had me stuck these last few days. Whoever came up with those specific number requirements for the levels has to be a dandori master or something, because you have to play as perfect as possible on a lot of these levels. I like to think I'm pretty good at these games, but man, these ones put me through the wringer. Forest Navel in particular I ended up just watching a high score video on YouTube to get the best route because I could not get that 300 for the life of me. Got it all done though, and now I wait patiently until Pikmin 2 wins the Nostalgia Society lol.

I'm thinking about giving up on getting RetroAchievements to work with EmuDeck.

All of the instructions for swapping to the Dev branch don't seem to work, and RA isn't supported on the stable build of Dolphin.

I'm either giving up, or installing Standalone dolphin myself later on. Wish me luck >-<

Also I think I'm going to start running out of space for these userbars soon lmao

UPDATE

Defeated the damn birds, it was hard, literally ran out of red Pikmin had to replay the Forst of Hope to restock on Pikmin, but now the two pieces of the first level and the Forest of Hope's pieces has been cleared, now doing the Forest's navel, 13 pieces gathered so far and 17 days left

You have to read the manual for this info
The manual is so cute and helpful ^_^

I don't have multiple colors of pikmin yet, but this looks good to know. lol, ICO was the first game I looked up the manual for in these threads: I wish I had thought of doing that before instead of going straight to a guide >_<

I always get the manuals for games I intend to play seriously. It really makes it feel more 'real' if that makes sense. They used to be a big part of getting a new game back in the day. I'd be cracking those open and reading on the way home from the store.
Ah memories~

Forest Navel's challenge is giving me trouble too but, it's a lot fun, 270 is my best score so far, if I finish by the end of the month I'll be happy😅

Oh shit, I didn't even think about using Retro for this, damn. I'm already too far deep. But I've already gotten pretty far in the past couple days, and May is only just begun, so I might try a 'chievo run before the month is through.

More screens of my progress because I bitched and moaned about wanting to play Pikmin so much, I just gotta be more active in these threads:

I will return to shit up this thread with more mediocre updates, thank you and good afternoon...

Congrats to @PupinDaTurd, @random0nonsense, @TruxtonTatsujin, and anyone else I might be missing who've managed to roll credits already!
Folks back on Hocotate didn't even have time to realise you'd been missing. :P

Did you have any luck with getting Dolphin and RA linked up @ThatOneLum? ^^

I've been trying to chip away at the 12 day run for the cheevo, and it ain't half hellish. XD I've lost count of how many times I've had to retry due to whistling bomb wielding Yellow Pikmin who just decide on a whim to drop their bombs where they stand and obliterate 30% of my mini-army at once.
So many 10+ minute attempts dusted in an instant by one wrong move.
Sad Emoji GIF

The good news is, I'm now almost half way done! I'm on day 6 with 13 ship parts.
Impact Site & Forest of Hope both cleared in 2 days, hopefully giving me a bit of breathing space in the late game.

There's no definitive 12 day guide out there, so I'm following a 9 day guide and watching videos of people clearing each area in a single day for general inspiration. No chance I'm pulling any of that off, but the general routing has been super helpful.

Psyching myself up for the challenge mode cheevos. Kudos for Xyber & DanC for blitzing through 'em. 🚀

Also, kind of reassuring reading other people restarted their first playthrough as well in order to have better odds of finding all parts in the time limit. The time restriction always feels so pressing to me. It's terrifying, but also my favourite part of the game 😂 Well, that and the music that plays when you finish a day and round the Pikmin up. So good.

Glad to see so many people getting involved in this one. :]

How the heck you guys are so fast? i had to rewind levels because i end up messing piece collection or commiting accidental Pikmin (G word)

Me too dude. Sometimes I'm moments away from salvaging a piece at the end of the day, other times I'm waaaay off. (And tbf, most of the times I'm waaay off xD) I'm a menace to the Pikmin population

Day 3: Almost triple dipped parts by getting the bolt, the spring, and the blaster in one go, but took too long clearing out the part for the blaster, and lost a few little fellas along the way. They will be sorely missed...

Day 4: Wrapping up Day 3 stuff, finishing all of the parts that don't require avoiding drowning to get. Uneventful, path to blaster already cleared and of course those spotty fuckers stayed dead. Free to get me some blue fellas and explore the belly button.

More mediocre gameplay to come...

Unfortunately i can't play this game on the account that i can beat this game in 1 sitting and the fastest i beaten this game is in 13 days (14 if i beat the secret boss)

If anyone wants some extra-curricular Pikmin gaming for this month, I'd recommend Pikmin 1². It's a full remake of Pikmin by PikHacker (A legend in the Pikmin hack/mod scene), but using Pikmin 2's game engine, which I think many of you will find beneficial seeing as Pikmin 2's engine is a lot more refined and smoother compared to the first game. It does genuinely change how you play the game as well, and makes it the best way to play Pikmin 1 imo (Well technically it's a hack for Pikmin 2). He even went as far as to create a built in randomiser and his own custom second story mode that acts as a sort of prequel to the intro of Pikmin 2.

Arrigato PikPik gunkan gunsou-san!
Here's an earlier thread talking about it
Here's a link to the guys repo

This is, like, the anti situation of the Banjo Kazooie thread, where the decomp came out barely a day and a half before the month was even over and no one could switch over to it if they tried.
