RGT Nostalgia Society #12 - Pikmin

Aw, I wanted to point that out, but I didn't think you were messing up the achievement because you didn't know it was 450 and that you were just hitting shy of it. I didn't want to poor salt in the wound...

Don't worry, I had a laugh when I realized it😂. By now I got my route completely memorized and after calculations it's good for only 435😑. Tonight I have to find a way to squeeze 15 more somewhere ::thinking

I'm so scared of those challenge levels. I'm definitely not touching those LOL.

That being said, I am considering going back to finish my Pikmin 2 playthrough after I clear the first game. We dropped our playthrough because we both didn't enjoy that game as much as the first. The pacing felt way off to me, the cave levels ruin the beauty of the day cycle.

Hopefully I don't get strung up for saying that...

It's actually quite fun, and enraging sometimes😂. Its hard but not impossible and the fact you can see your points getting better run after run is nice.

Runs done! Really glad I got to replay this. Always bittersweet saying goodbye to my little pikis.

Feel a lot better about my score compared to my first tandem run. I could definitely do it a lot faster, but this was leisurely and fun.

I've started again and made a much better start this time. By day 2 I've got at least 2 ship parts and found the yellow pikmin and the fire rocks, and opened up a bunch of the paths in the forest that were previously locked off to me.

I'm deffo gonna start checking how well I've been doing at teh end of each day so I can revert if I feel like I screwed it up or whatever.

How does this thread feel about Pikmin being treated/compared as an RTS? Do you guys think it's fair or do you think it's a silly comparison? I've always seen it done as a way to put down the game for others like AoE. Personally, I never thought it was much of a fair comparison.

From a purely technical standpoint I'd agree that this is an RTS. It's played in real-time and is clearly a strategy game, but it's not exactly the same beast as a full RTS game like AOE or Command & Conquer.

It's got a unique control scheme and gameplay style, but it's at the very least a strategy title.

Yeah, I think it plays more like the RTS parts of Giant Citizen Kabuto or Brutal Legends than AoE.

I AM FREE!

Finally got all the pieces on the first three zones, have to make a stop on the Landing site to restock for the Distant Spring, explored it a bit and is mostly water, so priorizing blue and yellow over red ones for the last portion
FINAL COUNT
Ten days left, only the Distant spring pieces left to collect

Having enacted a brutal cleansing of the Navel, getting the Coil was no problemo (since, no Firehogs) but that still left the bosses. I overprepared for the Puffstool fight thinking I needed bombs or something, but you can just flip him over with regular swarming so I just moshed him with 100 Red Pikmin.

Surely you will not regret using 100 Red Pikmin. *OMINOUS FORESHADOWING*

This leaves the Beady Long Legs, and while I ended up clearing the way to him, I ran out of time. I decided not to go back for just single part, so he may live....for now...
DAY 10:
Big centennial, dropped down on the Distant Spring for the first time, and what do I see?

Why! Great googly moogly, there's a gosh darn egg over here! Perhaps it contains friends!

IT DOES NOT CONTAIN FRIENDS! IT DOES NOT CONTAIN FRIENDS!!!
View attachment 183193View attachment 183194
However, it DOES contain a delectable gold pearl for my troubles! See? You really can't go wrong with 100 Red Pikmin!
Note: 100 Red Pikmin were not harmed in the making of this screenshot, only about, like, 15 of them. 100 Pikmin were made in the creation of this screen, however, and this shall be known as the Great PikPik Baby Boom of 2026.

Oh! But @DinoRexMax ! You simpleton! Now you've forgone collecting a part for the day in your battle with the Smoky Progg! Now you are a day behind on collection!

Yee-Haw! Now that's a lot of Red Fellas!
Haven't noticed your narration style, that made me KEK, also holy cow you are doing relatively fast and fine, my KIA ratio is already in the third digit
But first, clearing my bellybutton

Yay got blue pikmin ^_^

Only one way to find out? idk olimar, the fact it is just standing in water and doesn't give a fuck would also be pretty conclusive to me... This makes me think astronauts on olimar's planet are not trained as scientists >_<

POV: You ask your parents to take you to blockbuster to get a new gamecube game to pass the time since its the itty baby console at the time. Have a grand old time until you get to the caverns of hellfire and death. Have a fear of bugs and spiders, see this boss. Turn off game and never beat it until a near decade later.

Ah, well, that's because this was the first post I did a Kirk style narration, I was hoping there was the quote from Twilight Zone in the GIFs tab, but then I saw the Rocketman one, and that one was way funnier (considering how much fun I was having, as well as "lifting off" every night, it felt fitting).

And after having made such a fuss over Pikmin the past...uh...5-6 polls now? I am now obligate to participate instead of just observing.

But alas...our journey is almost at it's end...

Day 18:

Captain's log, Star date 2026/05/10, I have officially cleared out both the Forest of Hope and the Distant Spring at a personal record pace. However, if I was any faster, I wouldn't have to backtrack to get this last part form the Navel.

But, it was from a massive boss fight, so I guess I was right to hold it off until now.
gpie01_2026-05-10_03-04-43-png.183937

Now, the common strategy when dealing with the Beady Long Legs is to use Yellow Pikmin to reach the Arachnorb's central body due to it's height. But as everyone knows, the Red Pikmin do 1.5x damage and make the fight go by faster, so the real trick is to time your attacks to when the Long Legs bends down every so often (which will give you the opportunity to reach it with other Pikmin breeds). You could bring a full squad of 100 to try and make the fight go by even faster, but I've learned over the course of this playthrough that a larger fighting force is less coordinated, and therefore strays tend to get crushed when you least expect it.

I managed to get a no-death run onf the long legs with a 30-man squad and some careful tossing. Then I just cruised through the rest of the day getting nectar and pellets to bosleter my forces for the coming days.
GPIE01_2026-05-10_03-11-47.png

WHAT THE? When did I lose a Pikmin?

Oh, someone must've got snagged on the way home carrying spoils, I knew I should've killed that fucking frog...

Day 19:
GPIE01_2026-05-10_03-14-42.png

Yay! This is always my favourite part of the game, what I like to call "the vacation". After acquiring the Engine on the 1st day, there's still 1 last part you won't be able to reach without first getting your hands on the other 2 Pikmin colours. That is, of course, due to the part being surrounded by water and behind a rock wall.

I ended up happening upon the Landing Site on a day where the Goolix Spawned instead of the Mamuta, which alternate between odd and even days in appearances. The Mamuta is neutral and non-offensive, and will leave you alone as long as you don't attack it. And, he's such a lovely fellah, I don't know why you'd attack him in the first place.
P4_Comic_Mamuta.png

Ironically, the Goolix is actually the easier of the two, since it's only effective against Red/Yellow Pikmin. It acts like water hazards and prevents them from attacking, but the Blue Pikmin can just whack that thing until it's dead. Both monsters seem to be more lethal to Olimar himself rather than the Pikmin, but it's still fairly difficult to lose to either of them. The Goolix is better since it's actively antagonistic, so you can kill it and not feel bad about snagging it's spoils.
Pearly_Clamclamp.jpg

GPIE01_2026-05-10_03-29-33.png
GPIE01_2026-05-10_03-30-27.png

The real fun of backtracking to the Landing Site, is the Pearly Clamp Clamps hiding behind the rock wall. 1 of them has the Positron Generator inside of it, which is one of the 25 essential parts needed to escape the planet. And yet, the REAL prize are the 2 pearls the other 2 happen to carry. They are the common variants of the Gold Pearl the Smoky Progg drops in the Distant Spring, yielding only 50 Pikmin in place of the whopping 100 the Gold one nets you. So I figured the yellows and blues earned these one. The great thing about cleaning up the Landing Site (especially as preparation for Emperor Bulblax) is that it's just a massive recharge. There's massive 10/20 Pellets all over the place for every colour, so it's just smorgasbord of Pikmin to spawn. So if you're careful with the Clams, you can get 100s of Pikmin for your final count.
GPIE01_2026-05-10_03-45-58.png

Can I get a Hell yeah?

Anyhow, I'm all caught up with my screenshots (which were acquired over 2 sessions the previous weekend) and I have yet to face the Emperor as of the time of this post. I doubt I'll be able to get to him, kill him and get the secret stash all in one day. But for all intensive purposes, I've beaten Pikmin 1 for the time being, as Olimar will be able to escape the planet and live with 29 parts and all.

Well, I feel like a jackass. I've been playing Pirate Yakuza and kind of avoiding this one. Got bored with Yakuza and picked it up, and just finished day 3, and now I'm hooked.

Now I gotta wade through the thread amd see if I can pick up any tips and tricks.

Coming back to the thread to announce that I finished the game myself after seeing everyone else enjoying it. I even went and got all the parts, it just doesn't feel like a true Pikmin playthrough without 100%. There's something about Pikmin that is so quintessentially Gamecube. It's charming to bits and atmospheric as all get out. I hope everyone else had as much fun playing through it as I did! I'll include just how badly I did below... Try not to wince. (This was all in one session as well. Such a short but sweet game.)

Yay, figured out how to get the bombs from down here ^_^ It's probably super obvious, but it did take me some time to learn to manage the pikmin because I am dumb >_< I kept calling, but then they blow up ::sadkirby

It takes a little more time but it's safer to walk through the Yellow Pikmin to get their attention when carrying bombs. It took me a while to figure out how to work with them since their AI can be finicky in combat and such
If there was one big hint or piece of advice I'd give everyone here. It's that the Impact Site has super duper useful stuff. Even if you're not doing a 100% all parts run, it's still worth going back for a day if you're not confident in your Pikmin numbers.

That's exactly how I'm feeling. Kind of disappointed I waited until the middle of the month to start.
I started "on time", but only really have time now ^_^

That's what I do. I dismiss then the bombers sort themselves, still a little clunky micromanaging them, but I think I'm just not used to it yet >_<

Six pieces and days left, i expected the pond to be easier since it was mostly yellow Pikmin, but those damn frogs were programmed by angry men, there is that piece next to a narrow bridge you can only get with yellow Pikmin, i had to cheese it letting them drop it, recaling them and let blue ones make the load, managed to get the hang of it but still... i believe those carrot aliens will have to learn to fend themselves (As in, i am getting the 25 piece ending)

It's not actually super obvious to get the bombs in the Forest Navel, so don't feel too bad. Also, everyone hear can count on both hands how many times they've whistled a Rock Bomb Pikmin and they just drop their munitions and killed the whole squad. It happens, just reset and start the day over. Having played through this again, I've realized how nice and expedient the Pikmin series has been about that.

Yeah, see, you get it. But this requires having a clear know how of exactly HOW many Yellows you need for a job, since it makes wading through them like that unwieldy. It's nice that even in the first game, they had the foresight to have Rock Bomb Pikmin in a separate subgroup on dismissal from regular Yellow Pikmin.

Since one of the necessary parts is already at the Impact Site, you'll need to go back their even if you aren't doing an 100% run. It's such a chill part of any run to go back their and stock up with the Pearly Clamp Clamp pearls, plus all of the super high tier pellets lying around, and all the easy mid-bosses (either the Mamuta, which won't attack you, or the Goolix, which can't hurt Blue Pikmin and can just die to them). The idea is to plan accordinly on your visit, since you only need to go there twice (once on start, and once after you've got Blue and Yellow Pikmin to get the final part). I always save it for the very last thing I do before fighting Bulblax, like a calm before the storm sort of thing.

If it makes you feel any better, this has been me every other month of the Nostalgia Society. Banjo Kazooie was a special kick in the nads, since the Decomp for it came out only 4 days before the end and would've been super useful.

I totally forgot to check if that part was actually required or not. You're totally right though, The Impact Site really feels like a nice little rest area. I know Pikmin 2 had rest floors in their caverns but there's something specifically serene about that place.
