Popular games you don't care for?

I don't really hate any game, or any other piece of media. Not real hate – not the kind of hate that you can feel bubbling, boiling, burning inside you. The kind of hate that drives a man to the edge, that makes him not a man, but a blithering, bleating, babbling baboon of a creature, foaming at the mouth, shaking at the legs, his fingers clenched and his eyes bloodshot. No, there aren't any games I hate like that.

EXCEPT ONE.

This game, and the dipshit who made it, embody everything I hate about the world. I can literally point at this one singular piece of media as the sole moment when I stopped liking modern entertainment. It's ugly. It's boring. It's unoriginal to the point of plagiarism. Every line of dialogue is dripping with a smug, self-satisfied, passive-aggressive tone specifically formulated to make people like me go insane. It's the dark heart of millennial writing, millennial humour, millennial cultural values. It's the black, filth-drenched core of 2010s pop culture, that turned this world's joy to silt.

And yet everyone loved it! Oh, they loved it. And everyone was influenced by it. And everyone rewarded the petulant, infantile larva who created, shortly after squirming his way out of the devil's septic tank. Oh, they rewarded him! Oh, he's at the top of the world, isn't he? And if you don't like it, don't like the game, well – you're just jealous, aren't you? Yes, you silly, foolish little chinchilla. You're just jealous. It was supposed to be bad, can't you see? It was supposed to be smug. It was supposed to be corruptive, corrosive, evil. And it was. And now, everything will be. Forever.

I have this theory that I can tell whether or not we'll get along by if you enjoy Undertale or not – the kind of person who likes this game typically has a mindset that I am physically repulsed by, in the same way a magnet is physically repulsed by another on the opposite polarity. I've gotten into multi-page internet arguments about it. Friendships have been ended. I've been labelled a pariah. And yet, for the rest of eternity – for the rest of time! – I, Gorse, will hate this game.

At the closing of this world, when the sun fades and chaos retakes the universe, I will be there.

And I will still hate Undertale. You won't get me too, Toby. No – you won't get me.

Don't know if it counts as popular but they are quite well received however I personally am not a fan of the two Dreamfall games. It mainly stems from The Longest Journey being one of my favorite games of all time and I heavily disliked the direction they took the world that TLG built. I much prefer TLG as a standalone game that told a complete story.

Probably a hot take but I never liked the Souls-like games. Only one that I kinda liked is Bloodborne but even that one I struggled to get into. I probably need to "Git Gud" to enjoy those types of games...but no patience.

Also the GTA series. Bleh!
I've never been a fan of the souls games. I have Dark Souls 1 & 2 and Elden Ring, have spent hours playing them, but they never get more enjoyable to me.

I liked GTA 2, 3 and Vice City, but have not cared for any game in the series after that.

I am not a fan of the Switch Zelda games. My wife is obsessed with them and I have tried playing both, but the constant weapon breaking is just frustrating and the maps seem convoluted and needlessly difficult to get around when trying to get from one area to the next. I quit both games halfway through.

Every E-Sports/Game as a service, type of game altough it is very funny seeing how they crash or become a failure

we talkin bout popular games outside of retroism? then every single fuckin gacha game ever
fuckin hate em roll-for-png-waifus, it's cos of that shit that we no longer get good games, and companies picked up on that and voila welcome to the modern age

the worst part of it all, is that's what people actually like now
it's all a contest of making the horniest game nowadays
Dolls Frontline is pretty okay.

MICA care about their customers at the very least and the plot is basically metal gear meets evangelion at this point.

Ever tried Sekiro? Or Lord of the Fallen (23)?

It's a different take on the formula, you might like.

Allow to say, too, that often enough, games get further sullied by being surrounded by a frothy, highly vitriolic and self aggrandizing community. This seems to be the case with Undertale.

This is the greatest thing I’ve read on this forum thus far, and I love undertale.
Calling Toby Fox a dipshit is the great thing I’ve this year, nay, this decade.

same, but I still liked Dreamfall:TLJ for what it was. Dreamfall: Chapters is complete garbage and ruins everything the past games did though.

OH, HOW I HATE UNDERTALE!
Haha, oh man that was an amazing read! I can't say I share your caustic hatred for the game but I couldn't care less for it if I tried. One thing that baffled me was the hype surrounding it. Even people I totally didn't expect to be smitten with it were and they were gushing over it being the best game ever made. My reaction to that has always been 'really? This pretentious mess that has barely anything going for it, no matter what aspect of it you look at?' It's better than a banana taped to a wall, I'll give it that but let's not pretend that's a high bar to clear.

As for other games I think nothing of - anything by the big N. Marios, Zeldas, Metroids, you name it, I don't care for it. I didn't grow up with their games and while I've tried quite a few of them over the years and I consider some of them to be good, maybe great even, they elicit zero emotional response from me. You could Thanos-snap them out of existence and I wouldn't feel an iota of emotion about it one way or another. The company itself fills me with burning rage but that's a different story.

-Personally I don't care about Souls series, it isn't just the difficulty and general edgelordism surrounding it, I am not really into action games in general and hate stuff like rolling. For that reason I couldn't care about The Witcher series after 1 too.

-Not a fan of Bethesda despite loving crpgs, I just feel their games get uninteresting fast as their huge worlds have little variation, lots of copy paste and few enemy variety and the general battle system feels shallow. I could say this about lot of open world games too. (I have yet to play Morrowind though)

-I dislike modern military shooters like CoD and shooters that like to move the camera too much, like head bobbing and whatnot. Completely unplayable to me. Even worse if it starts with a some pretentious narration about war.

-Also don't care about Fire Emblem, I can't get into tactical rpgs, but that series looks particularly generic to me, no idea what people see in Awakening. I would remove half of these FE characters from Smash. But then again nintendo as a whole feels generic/too safe to me nowadays.

Gorse those are some strong feelings man. I dont completely agree but I respect it!
lol

Moon RPG did it better.

The new Resident Evil Remakes, i can't stand them. I don't like how americanized they are, and the overly dark tone is not something i enjoy to be honest.

I agree.

I don't understand the GTA 5 hype. I played all GTA games and loved them, but when stuff gets hyped up as much as GTA5 has, and then I play it and I dont instantly love it, i just drop it very quickly.
Same thing happened with Evangelion.

Thats the neat thing all of them honestly cause im too busy playing retro games to even give a shit bout them.

i despise all soulslike games. i think they are the reason we do not have good action games anymore

As a big Dark souls 1 fan, I think this is a valid take and we need less soulslike worship/more haters. There’s not nearly enough

Mario, pokemon and the most of sports games.

Starting with Mario: I find it somewhat tedious and not very pleasant to play, and it doesn't help that it was one of the first things I tried on an emulator (nes mario bros), since it started from the first level every time I stopped playing, since I didn't know about savestates. I'm simply not interested in most of its games, although I tried to play Mario 64, but it still didn't catch my attention.

pokemon: more of the above but on steroids, plus it's super slow and boring. i still don't understand why people like pokemon so much. i tried playing pokemon red, and although i remember beating a few gyms, then some things happened and i lost all my progress, and even though i tried playing it several times after that, i just couldn't get to the same point as before. after pokemon red, the next thing i tried to play with more or less the same seriousness was pokemon emerald (gardevoir forever) and although i made some progress, it wasn't something that surprised me either (i couldn't even evolve kirlia and get gardevoir). despite the above, i have the sincere intention of going back to pokemon emerald and, at the very least, getting gardevoir... after having it, i'll see if i finish the game, if i only max gardevoir or if i'm satisfied and never touch pokemon again in my life.

And sports games: fifa, madden and others, is there anything else i should say? they are practically the same since the ps1 generation, or since the sega genesis in the case of fifa. i don't like either of those two sports in the first place. those kind of games are practically what many in the industry hate (the same thing over and over again, but in a different color). simply boring and, on the occasions i did play fifa, zero intuitivity, zero entertainment and zero control even (i remember that on one occasion the player i was controlling even moved by himself, without me doing anything).

...Touhou project series, most of all.
genshin impact.
world of warcraft (would like to play, it's pretty late for me).
blazblue, guilty gear.
undertale. yes, this last one, I only saw the pacifist route on youtube.
I'm fine with that I have personal reasons behind this, I know my limits...

One case for me is the Smash series. I know it's wildly popular and everything, but I could never take it seriously in the slightest. It strikes me (no pun intended) as a party game rather than a fighting game.
Quite a bold statement but I also prefer Smash as a party game but you'll get burnt by the hardcore fans for daring to actually enjoy the game without the need to turn off items, use techniques like L-cancelling and wave dashing, all on Final Destination, Battlefield and the Battlefield-like stages.

Shame that nobody actually cared making a Smash Bros indie game inspired mostly by the solo modes like ESS or even Multi-Man (we got a Target Test one but that's all).

As for me I don't care about TLOU because I'm fed up with zombie games regardless if the story is good.

Minecraft, any game from Fromsoftware, GTA, Modern COD and Battlefield.

about undertale, I neither like nor dislike it.
however, you will find me right when I sum it all up in one word:
suspicious.

since that gamefaqs voting tournament happened in 2015, undertale being crowned champion against super mario world, even though I knew a little bit about everything on the internet and witnessed that vote in general...
something back then, didn't fit for me. something was out of place, ever since then.

now tobyfox (a.k.a. annoying dog), is in the summit.
how this is even possible, with this "one(-hit wonder)" game like undertale?

the more I'm getting information about undertale and tobyfox, the stranger it all gets throughout his meteoric rise.

For the Souls games I can appreciate the story being minimalistic and its Berserk inspired dark fantasy setting but I just dislike the overall tone of "it's an hardcore game made for true games that git gud (unless you're using magics then you're cheating)" from the fanbase of these games.

Sure, I do enjoy challenging games but Dark Souls, Bloodborne and other FromSoft games are not that hard to begin with. People like to think they're more legitimate as gamers for beating games deemed hard and if someone dares questioning the design of a game or its bosses they often use the same "git gud" (or more recently "skill issue") argument instead of reflecting on the jankiness or genuine flaws of a game.

Nobody ever said that, in a legitimately bad game, it's the player's fault rather than the bad controls or mediocre and confusing level design. Nobody would tell that if someone struggled at Superman 64 it's because he didn't get good enough, this is simply a weak argument.

Dark Souls games can also be cheesed thanks to specific builds or even just leveling up or abusing i-frames.

As for Kingdom Hearts I liked the first game but I sincerely got dissapointed that it's not a proper "Final Fantasy x Disney" crossover and that you mostly see Nomura's characters instead of non FFVII/VIII/X and even TWEWY ones...

Also how to understand the story fully you needed to buy a GBA for the direct sequel of KH1 and even do spinoffs that are mandatory to the main plot instead of having to do KH 1 then 2... I think the Nobodies and Organisation XIII already made the plot overcomplicated for no reasons.

Horizon as a franchise is really generic and yet another Open World even if I like the dinosaur robots.

Undertale is a special case,
I don't mind the characters or setting but the fanbase can get irritating and self-referenced and post-ironic humour gets old and I also feel like I'm an adult watching cartoons made for little kids to learn things instead of a RPG with proper monsters... It's a bit too infantilising to my taste (even if I enjoy stuff like Kirby or Sonic).

Maybe the overall Tumblr/Twitter feel of the fanbase also tends to make me avoid them (not that I mind that there's a lesbian couple with a nerdy dinosaur and a tomboy fishwoman nor that the main protagonist is non binary for self identification reasons but I just couldn't bother with them).

I don't think Deltarune could be as good as humour from the 2010's is getting old and outdated.
