Anime Obscure Anime

Woah, that's kinda weird! I literally first heard about this anime three days ago and you posted this yesterday

Crazy timing
Oh huh. I watched it back in mid 2022 and have only rewatched it once so far and I've also read the manga too in 2022.

I am not sure if this is obscure per se but the first anime I ever saw was Bubblegum Crisis - I remember the weebish kid coming to my house because my mom felt bad that he didn't have friends, and neither did I, so we watched that along with playing Strider on the Genesis with the turbo controller and we steamrolled it

I discovered this Anime by looking up what else the creator of Lain, Chiaki J. Nonaka, did.

It's made with a very old style of CG but I find it adds to the creepness and vibe of the setting.

Generator Gawl is one of the best things no one talks about. That dub is golden, the action top-notch, the story a wild ride.
The animation is great late-90's/early 2000's pre-digital lovely.
Find it.
Get it.
Love it

Haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember watching Pet Shop of Horrors back when it was available at video stores. The manga is longer than the anime.

probably my all time fav anime. Its been getting a little bit more recognition lately due to some youtube videos and stuff but i cant recommended it enough. The dub is pretty good too so u can either watch dub or sub.

i also got into anime really early as a child. like 7 or 8 (unrestricted internet access) and i remember watching this for a bit. Minami Ke. dont think i actually finished it tho

i could also just put some 2000s anime like love hina since it would be obscure to newer anime fans but i feel like it wouldn't fit the bill since they were still pretty popular back then

Is Miami-ke really obscure? I know it's manga is still publishing for 20 years now since 2004 & there's been 498 chapters published, while there's also a potential 5th season that's in the works, which it was announced last year:

I've watched the seasons 1-3, the Minami-ke Betsubara episode as well as the Minami-ke Omatase episode, which I watched on Halloween day last year. I do plan to watch Minami-ke Tadaima, (season 4) & Minami-ke Natsuyasumi.

Lets try and flex the old memory.

The most obscure anime I've ever owned physically was:
55D1BC764B7BC10010

Submarine 707R - I've never met another soul in the wild who's seen it.
Not bad, just generic- got a western release because Sony was desperate for UMD releases

Neo Ranga has fallen beneath a lot of peoples radar.

Mostly because of it's unconventional runtime of 11 minute long episodes,
It's a mythical tribal infused mecha anime.

This is going to push the definition of Anime considering its American origins but it was animated by Studio Madhouse

Peter Chung's: Reign the Conqueror/Alexander

Oh!
One I can actually wholeheartedly recommend:

Highlander: Vengeance, Yeah. Studio Madhouse made a HIGHLANDER anime film and its glorious.

Yet barely any self professed Highlander fan I've met has seen it.

wait that shits still going? Most people ive talked to online in discord servers about it say they never heard of it so that's what i consider "obscure".

Yep, still publishing, as I saw that chapter 498 was recently unofficially translated: https://mangadex.org/title/25886ab0-17f1-4801-b929-6b36fe4e5214/minami-ke and like I mentioned about a fifth season or such being announced last year in my post above. I've never talked to anyone about the anime but I can't say it's obscure or not.

Anime wise Minami-ke is sorta obscure, the manga is pretty well known, at least from where I am.

Now, back to topic, I think most people would enjoy Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na, it's a story about 3 girls trying to make an anime, with all it's drawbacks and issues and how they overcome it with clever planning. The delusional part is dope too.

I implore everyone to watch Trava, I'm not sure how obscure it is but it is a masterclass of animation and style. Having Takeshi Koike work on it is a major plus.
For anyone who doesn't know who Takeshi Koike is he's a key animator on Redline, Hajime no Ippo, Afro Samurai, Trigun Badlands Rumble and Samurai Champloo just to name a few of the big ones.

This anime was HUGE when it came out, making rounds all over the internet, and then a month later it's like it disappeared. It's a shame because this one of those anime that REALLY knows how to make you care for it's characters and story, especially if you're any sort of artistic person who's trying to create their own work. Must watch anime.

Danball Senki
Danball Senki W
Danball Senki Wars

Watch all 3 of them and if you can get the games, PLAY THEM!!!

Seriously, I need more people to nerd out about this series with.
I love the Danball Senki series, I used to watch it on TV as a kid and build the model kits.
Unfortunately only the first 3DS game got localized, and the first two seasons of the anime are basically impossible to find in my country.

I'm glad that I found somone who knows this series and recomends it

I watched that anime in early 2021 & I liked it. Eazy Breezy.

Two anime that are quite obscure even in Japan but popular in Greece and Saudi Arabia are Igano Kabamaru and Plawres Sanshiro. Kabamaru is even today a pop culture classic in Greece and you can even find restaurants in Greece named after Kabamaru (the protagonist is a glutton ninja). Both of them are fantranslated with Japanese audio and English subs and I highly recommend both of them.

I've been on an OVA binge. Recently I watched Baoh, an anime from the same creator of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. The series is pretty unknown, even to Jojo fans. The manga also got canceled very early too so its got a real, "lost treasure" feel to it.
Late reply but funnily enough it was the first Araki work I've watched before knowing about JoJo (well, aside from Jump Superstars).

I ended up reading the original manga and I really liked it. While it's cancelled the ending is still satisfying as a one-shot story and I'm glad Baoh is in JoJo All Star Battle.

I forgot it I posted it but this trilogy of OVAs is my favourite from Kawajiri.

Cyber City Oedo 808

(It's 808 because it's happening in the year 2808).

I wouldn't call it obscure per se (maybe a bit) but Blue Submarine N°6 is quite good for a 4 episodes OVA set with a Waterworld-esque universe mixed with Space Battleship Yamato.

Yūki Yūna wa yūsha de aru (Yuuki Yuuna is a hero):
Yuki_Yuna_wa_Yusha_de_Aru_Promotional_Poster.png

I don't if it could be considered obscure, but there are middle school girls who have to fight to protect the world and a goddess known as Divine Tree, but there are unexpected consequences. Can't say too much, I don't wanna to spoil nothing.

I also can't say if it's obscure since I haven't watched it but it is on my plan to watch list.

i saw recently daishizen no majuu bagi, by osamu tezuka, looks to be relatively unknown despite the prominent creator.
i lieked it, bcz the woman character did all the work and our guy could sit out the danger.
it has a sad ending, nature and science are not holistic, humanity cant just mix and match like it is its right
my favourite character was the black despot, probably based on idi amin, the ugandan dictator
