Since we're talking about Bass, is Axl supposed to be his "equivalent" in the X series? I mean...
Mega = X
Proto = Zero
Bass = ?
Well, Axl shoots in 8 directions like Bass and their colors are more or less similar (gray, purple, yellow) but their personalities are very different so I have a hard time seeing Axl as a Bass' counterpart.

He always came off as a bit too much of a Poochy-type character for me, while Bass more has that corny but very fun ”evil twin” vibe, but his rapid-fire gameplay is probably inspired by Bass’ gameplay to a degree.

I see Bass a the Vegeta type of character in the classic series, angry, impulsive, has this rivalry with the main character and what not, while Axl is a different thing, he's more like a teenager trying to look edgy (and ultimately failing) and he's a bit too cheerful. So I just can't see him as Bass' "spiritual successor".

I'll probably sound dumb right now, but what's "Poochy-type character" supposed to mean?

It’s from The Simpsons, a ”Poochy” is a character that comes off as sort of a writer’s pet, trying to replace an existing character or hugging the spotlight, usually to the audience’s chagrin.
Raiden from MGS was similar but people warmed up to him in the end.

Probably didn’t help that people really don’t like X7 in general, I liked Axl more in X8.

Indeed both are edgy but in different ways. I think Axl is a lot more cheesy happy-go-lucky while Bass is like a fan of Marilyn Manson who's angry at his parents.

I know that lore-wise they're different characters but one can't deny they're basically like reincarnations of Mega and Proto both in design and personality, which is why I called them counterparts.

I don't think it's a true romance unless one of them is constantly trying to kill the other.

Fake. Zero ends up marrying Alia and X is too busy trying to bring justice to the world to think about these things.
Although X8 tries to sell the idea that Zero x Layer, X x Alia, , Axl x Pallete. But I ignore this entirely since my headcanon has the priority.
