Mega Man Megathread

Ugh, I hate hate hate HATE when people treat Classic series like this. How hard it is to understand that it's merely different, not inferior, and that some of us actually like its way of doing things better than the X and Zero series's?
All YouTubers ever: wait, classic can’t wall-jump? Refunding this on steam!!!!!

Unrelated but I’m reminded of this

Context: he means not play on his channel, as in not doing any damageless runs, which is completely fair

I wish you were joking.

Seriously, though, why is there such favoritism towards the X and (to lesser extent) Zero games? Is it really because they're more "actiony" and "edgy"?

I’ve a few reasons.
  1. Inherent bias against “NES-hard” games, treating them as outdated.
  2. “Moar mechanics = moar gooder!!” Mentality. I’ve had a friend who couldn’t stand Megaman because he couldn’t shoot in 8 directions.
  3. Some people love zero. Even though he’s only good in like… two X games ever.
  4. Moar mature = better!!!1!!1
  5. Action games bias, kinda like how some people don’t like turn based.
  6. Lastly, a lot of people can’t grasp the idea of playing a game more than once. Like it’s so foreign to them even though you can theoretically beat all six NES games in one setting if you really want to (i should honestly do that again some day, I found it unique)
Castlevania fandom has a similar issue if you’re interested in hearing.

This sounds about right.

The sixth reason is really funny to me since MM games get better with replays, IMHO.

I'd like to hear more about Castlevania fandom, but we should do that in DMs as to not derail the thread.

Ofc, good call.

I've been doing a marathon of the games with a close friend of mine recently. we just finished ZX. They told me "damn, that's quite a cliffhanger," and I reminded them I've been living with that feeling for 17 years.

If I had a nickel for every Mega Man series that ended with a cliffhanger, I'd have three nickels.

Every Megaman sub-series has their pros and cons but all of them are great. I have a preference for the X series but that's probably because I started playing on the SNES, then I only got to play the classic games later.

Here's how I'd rate my favorite Megaman sub-series:
1. X (favorite games: X2)
2. Legends (favorite game: Legends 2)
3. Classic (favorite game: MM8)
4. Zero (favorite game: Zero 3)
5. ZX (favorite game: ZX)

I've never played the RPG games.

The thing is I wasn't around playing games when the 8-bit games were released so I don't have this nostalgia for them. Then MM7 is... well, it's ok but a bit clunky. MM8 has smooth controls and that amazing 90s feeling to it which I really like (just listen to that japanese ending theme).

I don't have any nostalgia for the NES titles, either. I just think MM8 is a bad game.

When I was a kid Megaman was THE game series for me (along with Zelda). I don’t play them as much anymore but mainly because I’ve replayed them so much, but he holds a dear place in my heart. As an adult I discovered Astro Boy and became a huge fan of it, which probably wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t love Megaman in the first place.

My favorites are:
  1. Megaman X
  2. Megaman 7
  3. Megaman 3
I still haven’t played Legends apart from the intro stages so I still have work to do! :)

(Also I love the upon a star shorts, they’re so cute)

I think they're both very mediocre. Not even Bass's debut saves MM7 for me.
For me MM7 has a very objective problem which is it's controls. They're just bad, and for a Megaman game that's a huge thing. I still don't get how Capcom didn't realize this before releasing the game. The fact that there are romhacks to fix these problems make it even more evident.
Now MM8 is definitely not perfect but it's more like a matter of whether you want to look at the negative or the positive. Due to nostalgia I prefer to look more at the positive things, which as I already said I like the smooth gameplay, characters animations and the whole mid 90's thing, which to me playing this game is like going back home after a long trip.

Then there are the 8-bit games. I really like their precise and tight gameplay, in other words 'jump and shoot' feels great. But the level design in some of those games show their age, as well as some bosses like the Yellow devil.
Some people will say 'git gud' but I just can't get myself to enjoy unbalanced difficulty. And when I don't even have nostalgia to fill the gaps of bad design, then there's not much left in terms of how much I'm capable of enjoying these games.

I suppose you're right. For me, no amount of "pretty" graphics can fix MM8's boring and piss-easy level design and gameplay.

Shit take but I love that they brought back the Mega Ball from Mega Man Soccer. >_>;

I think MM8 is pretty meh too (I’m a superficial loser and it’s mostly because I hate how Megaman’s sprite is animated), but I’m obsessed with the Japanese intro.

Everything about it is just PEAK Megaman to me
