Mega Man Megathread

It's difficult choice only one, because I like all series
For the classic series my favorites is Megaman 3, It takes me back to good times from my childhood

The X series is cool
And I have two in the top
MegaMan X8 and X5
1774206152051.jpeg

For the zero series I love zero 2
When I played it for first time it was so funny
1774206211329.jpeg

For the Battle network mi favorite is BN3 blue. is the current megaman game I am playing
1774206369503.jpeg

I haven't finished Legends or ZX and Star Force yet, but I plan to.
(I've never put so much effort into a post before lol)

Classic series - Mega Man 3, 7 & 8 (with 8 being my favorite)

X series - Mega Man X1, X4 and X5 (probably would go with X4 as my favorite, although it's kinda too easy with both characters and i end up prefering X1 sometimes. X5 does have it's problems but i still love it.)

Zero series - Zero 2 & 3 (Zero 3 rules)

Legends - Legends 2

Never played Battle Network and Starfoce series so i'll leave it out.

Honorable mention to MM & Bass - i guess it would fit into the classic series but i've only beat it once with Bass so i'm not sure if i would put it up there yet.
Also, Mega Man Powered Up was an insane remake full of content and i think it's amazing, you can play as the Robot Masters! (although the chibi style is probably an issue for people who don't like it).

Overall - Zero series, since it features a ranking system that is meaningful and the games incentivize the player to get good and try to get the highest rankings. Don't mind my profile pic, i'm totally unbiased towards a certain character, trust me.

oh boy, let me think...
My overall favorite MegaMan game has to be 7, I just like it a lot more than the other
and then...
From the Classic Series I'd say: MegaMan 3, 6... maybe 4 as well, and I actually enjoy 1 and 8 quite a lot
(and perhaps World 4 just because of Ballade alone XD)

X Series: I love the original 4 games (and X6 (yes if you wanna kill me do it now)) but if I had to say a favorite it would be both X1 and X2, Maverick Hunter X... and the peak Xtreme 1 (seriously, I love Xtreme 1 lmao)

I loved the first Battle Network game (still have to play 2)...
And if I had to say some honorable mentions they would be: Zero 1 and 2 (2 mostly because of Departure god I love that song is like the best song ever made), I remember liking ZX Advent a long time ago(?), and honestly Battle & Chase is pretty dang fun lol

Mega Man Zero 2
Mega Man Zero 3
Mega Man ZX
Mega Man ZX Advent (I should replay this to make sure lol)
Mega Man 10
Mega Man Battle Network 3
Mega Man 7
Mega Man X1
Mega Man X5
These are my top favorite games in no particular order.

Per saga?

Classic: Megaman 8, ignoring the greatest dubbed scenes ever, the game had a refined gameplay that felt like a good followup to 7

X: X5, The intended end of the saga and the proper end to me and i am dying in that mount, best gameplay of the series, unique boss patterns and alternating between Zero and X is better than the routes angle of 4

Zero: Tie between 3 and 4, 3 is easly the one with best gameplay and story, feeling like the climatic faceoff between Zero and Weil, a nice closure... but the writers realized Weil was still at large at the end of 3, leading to 4, granted, said game is watered down 3 and the plot is more straightforward, but it gives a nice ending to the series

Legends: Draw between 1 and MOTB, both games are fine for their own merits

ZX: TBA (Havent played them)

Battle Network: 5 and 6, they managed to polish the saga's gameplay further and dropped the Kiddiness to offer a stakes fueled plot, also anything is better than 4

Mega Man 2, without a doubt. My mom got me that game when it came out and played it constantly. It was the first game I ever booted up just to listen to the music. I know everyone talks about Wily Castle 1, but that opening with the camera panning up the building until the rock kicks in..... I get chills just thinking about it.

ZX Advent is the best one for me, because like ZX it has a lot of (even more) pros, but its cons actually make the game a little better to me!

Pros:
- Great stage design and boss fights
- Reasonably compelling story
- Excellent art direction, as always
- Music is also great as per usual
- Top notch Biometal gameplay
- Bigger differences between the two playable characters make both sides worth playing
- Very cool completion bonuses (Model a is hard to get but a really cool reward)
- More intuitive zones (I get what ZX was going for, but the weird pathing didn't actually feel very open at all)

Cons (that make it better):
- Hokey voice acting (Mega Man as a series is known for it, but Advent was really ambitious and there's clips all over the game)
- Silly A-Trans gameplay (none of the forms are really viable, but some like Hedgeshock, Vulturon and Argoyle are really fun to mix things up with)

Genuine Cons (which I forgive):
- No overdrive
- Some really bad A-Trans forms (the ones I listed above are still pretty good, but then there's stuff like Chronoforce and Queenbee which are only good for one gimmicky thing, or Buckfire, Bifrost and Rospark which are just terrible across the board)
-
Why, why, WHY would you
show Prometheus and Pandora's data sparks in the air after their boss fight, and then NEVER let the player actually use them
?!
- Don't end on a cliffhanger and then cancel the series, guys, come on.

ZX, MM&B for SNES and the X8 16-bit demake.

ZX (ZXA too) is still unique to this day with its hopeful and melancholic environments and silky smooth gameplay, I want to see eventually a true metroidvania that uses the form changing as the core of the gameplay (Berserk Boy got close but it was on linear levels)

And MM&B is very underrated. I don't consider it to be that difficult compared to the bs other classic MM titles throw constantly, if anything, the game is consistently challenging and that's for the best. This is what MM8 should have been.

The X8 demake is excellent and objectively better than the original in so many ways, mainly the level design which IS the most important part of 2D Megaman in my eyes and is the thing that half of the X games got so wrong, including the original X8.
X gameplay it's at its best when dashing through everything and not when waiting for arbitrary slow mechanics that add nothing to the level to allow you to continue (which is the thing that the bad X games do a lot of) and this is what the original X8 does in half of the levels. Since none of that is in the demake and the annoying levels got some big overhauls it makes for a much better experience right away.
But instead of the unmodified game i'll say loud that the mod that adds Zero and Axl is the true way to play it, finding it can be a bit finicky though.

I want to play Battle Network 6 and Star Force 3 because I know these 2 will end on my favorite games ever lineup, there's no way they don't. (I still need to get through the slog of BN4 and SF2 first) ::peacemario

Special mention to Gravity Circuit, it's excellent and the best X/Zero inspired game to be released in some time. I recommend getting it right now that is on sale.
I would also say Gunvolt but I've yet to play all of them minus the first one.
Man, Gunvolt is awesome!

The weakest forms may be pretty fun when used creatively. Especially when you’re seamless swapping mid boss battle.

Like, a good example is placing yourself underneath the desert snake boss & swapping into Rospark to blast the shit outta em.

Mega Man 4 because it introduced the series stable Charge Shot

Zero1 because it's so short yet so fun it feels like it's begging you to speedrun it I remember finishing it in under 2 hours in one sitting it was a blast

I really love the whole series in general and it’s really hard to handpick my favorites. But MM 2 really sticks with me because it’s my entry to the series and the reason I fell in love with it in general.

I personally LOVE Mega Man 11. Don;t get me wrong, I definitely agree when people say Mega Man 2 is the best in the series, but I feel as though it fits more in the past. In MM11, the execution of storytelling though cutscenes are better than the rest of the OG series (the retro-era wasn't very notable to me, and MM8 had laughably bad voice acting). The Double-Gear system adds something unique, instead of simply inviting Proto-Man and Bass (there's no need since Mega can charge and slide just fine), making levels feel easier and making the player more powerful. Not only that, I was getting kinda tired seeing the 8-bit rendition of Mega at the time, so seeing it released ALL the way back in 2018 made me excited to see the series in a fresh new coat of paint. It just feels like an awesome update to a series that has been dormant long since it's hayday back in the 80's, and I love it for that.

Mega Man Soccer

Seriously though, Mega Man 2,being my first Mega Man game.

Mega Man 3 had more content and was replayed more, but I liked the music and graphics of 2.

Also played the first 3 X games that had polished gameplay but story started to get all over the place and I was not interested in Zero.

Every game afterwards got the Goku/Vegeta syndrome

its hard to pick 1 mega man game i like the whole mega man series
but my favorit must be mega man 3
because it was the first mega man i did play as a kid
and i like the music in mega man 3

I played every game Buster-only, aside from still not having a way to play Megaman 9 or 10, and X7 or X8.

I beat every Megaman Zero, and it was not a good time when compared to the original series and the X series. I beat Megaman ZX and it was way too butt easy, but also not as fun as the first two.

I once beat Megaman 1-6 in a row, buster-only.
My favorite challenge is the Megaman X 3 Saber Only.
I've beaten X1-3 no powerup, buster only on so many occasions I can't count on one hand.

I like Megaman Legends 2.
I even beat the first Battle Network despite hating how they bastardized the franchise, and what they did to mah boi.
Rockman & Forte is the peak game in the franchise.

And despite all of this
I could play Wily & Light no Rockboard; That's Paradise, literally all day, every day, and never ever get tired of it. I find it that enjoyable.

Thanks for all your responses guys! You all had pretty interesting stuff to say. I'll respond to my favorites.
Mega Man Legends!
A real fan right here.
Mega Man Legends is my favorite. The PSP games are a close second, followed by 11.
As someone who lived through the NES era my game selection was limited back then and entirely random. As such I never was lucky enough to play a single NES or SNES Mega Man game during the time when they were new. It wasn't until the PlayStation followed by the GBA that I was able to experience the series.
Super sweet story thank you ^^ And I LOVE 11.
It's a simple answer, but Megaman 2. Improved on the first one and made it feel so good and clean. Story presented in like two sentences at the beginning, no having to charge shots like crazy, no sliding, no bullshit-ass Protoman showing up to break up the flow of whatever level you're on, just 'go kill this log man and take his leaf power.' Good times.
Very interesting opinions here. I mean I like the slide, i think most people agree on it's utility and fun factor, but mega man 9 showed us less can definitely be more. I get where you're coming from.

Didn't exactly mean for fangames or spiritual successors to be talked about here but interesting thoughts regardless, and I'm definitely checking these out, so thank you.

I played from zero 3 to 4 to zx to zx advent in a row and by that point i was sick of playing zero games, so i didn't finish advent, and i feel like my opinions are extremely biased. I can say zx is a fun game though.
Mega Man 4 because it introduced the series stable Charge Shot

Zero1 because it's so short yet so fun it feels like it's begging you to speedrun it I remember finishing it in under 2 hours in one sitting it was a blast
Finally---- my people---- This is exactly why I love zero 1 to pieces. It was frustrating but so fun to A and S rank all the stages, and its the only one where i feel like getting ranks is most enjoyable since the stages are usually only slightly over a minute
I played every game Buster-only, aside from still not having a way to play Megaman 9 or 10, and X7 or X8.

I don't really get the hate for battle network, doesn't take away from the games you like, but I respect your opinion. Um, wow. Pretty interesting stuff here. I do love me some buster only challenges. If your claims are true, pretty cool stuff. You should record some footage and upload to YouTube, I'd love to see. (Also you're an absolute maniac for loving rockboard the most. LOVE this answer.)

Thanks guys! Loved reading these.

Mega Man X #2 Mini-review

Mega Man X #2 cover

When I saw that beginning with Spark Mandrill already defeated, I thought I had skipped an issue or something because it was so jarring. Otherwise, it was a pretty unremarkable issue.

Man, reading this glorified walkthrough really makes me want to reread Yoshihiro Iwamoto's Rockman X mangas.

Here's Flame Mammoth.

Flame Mammoth with fire in his eyes

I'm wondering why they've included an extinct species for the first MMX game's mavericks.

Maybe the joke is that mammoths are made for cold areas but they made it a flame themed one?
