Mega Man Megathread

I’m downloading a few romhacks. Mainly just the roll ones. There’s a refit romhack for 7 I wanna try the refit romhack.

I’m not sure what to expect going into the 7 ones but it’ll take a lot to make me like 7 honestly.

I tried Rockman 4 Minus Infinity a few times, but I never enjoyed it enough to finish it.

I’ll probably avoid ones that alter the game too drastically. My preference with romhacks are things that skip unskippable cutscenes and other similar QoL stuff. I’d rather not dive too deep into fangame territory.

"The dark emissary who's after Rockman!"

"Forte & Gospel"

"Forte is a combat robot created by Dr. Wily. He's obsessed with defeating Rockman and will stop at nothing to achieve that. Gospel is Forte's support mech, said to possess more combat power than the Wily Numbers (stage bosses)."

"The only way to fight the formidable Forte is through steady efforts!"

"Powered up by the evil energy entity and combined with Gospel, Forte is an incredibly strong enemy. Just like Duo, there are no effective Special Weapons, so the only way to defeat him is to hit him accurately with charge shots!"

Screenshot: "Forte can move freely in the air when combined with Gospel!"

Why does he only use the Buster?

IMHO, the main problem with MM&B's execution of the Double Hero system isn't that Mega Man is too weak, but that Bass is far too strong. He possesses many advantages (multidirectional fire, double jump, dash) without anything to balance them out. He's so strong, in fact, playing as him gets boring after a certain point. And no, his buster being awful against bosses doesn't count, since most players will use their weaknesses anyway.

Now, compare that to Zero. Zero has many strengths over X, such as superior mobility and attack power. However, they're balanced out by the fact that Zero is a melee-focused character who needs to get up close to enemies to deal damage. Combined with a lack of armor upgrades for him (excluding Black Zero upgrade, which is usually relegated to being a cheat), this makes him a Glass Cannon who requires a degree of skill to utilize. Aside from not overshadowing X, this makes for a much more interesting game, since you can choose between two distinct ways to play the game. You can either pick the character for those who like to take it slow and explore the levels (X) or the character for those who want difficulty and destroying everything in their path (Zero).

Really, just making Bass take double damage, like Proto Man in MM9 and MM10, or giving him less health would go a long way in making him more balanced and fun.

Shit take here, but I don't think it takes any amount of skill at all to play as Zero.

I really hope Capcom releases a Mega Man Legends collection for modern platforms. It's pretty much the only MM sub-series left. I've already given up hope on ever seeing Legends 3, but a collection at least would be nice.

Probably won't.
Do you know if Rockman & Forte is on a collection yet?

J’s reviews has become my most disliked mega man YouTuber ever.

I’ll use this review is his as sample. A lot of my points will be directed but vids as a whole but I’ll fixate on his MM5 review for a sec (and just his thoughts on classic).

First of all, scripting sucks. J’s does not know how to annunciate anything. In fact, I’d go as far to say he might be aware of the concept at all. He does pause, yet he still sounds like he’s saying everything in one breath. All his sentences and points blend into one another and it makes really tough to remember anything he said as it often sounds too neutral. It makes come off as either trying not to annoy anyone or just not really sure what he’s talking.

For the most, I tend to also dislike his approach with Mega man, where it seems like he wants the games to be as action heavy as possible with no room to stop and think. He consistently frames the X games as being inherently superior to Classic, and makes it sound like classic is just baby steps towards the X games as a whole which is a false premise for a Megaman discussion since they both do their own thing. I dislike how all Megaman YouTubers consistently set up X as being the evolution of Classic, and classic is just a downgrade to them.

His Mega man 5 reviews shows how unaware he is. Constantly pointing at the charge shot as being a great thing which proves my point he just wants a brainless action game. 5’d charge shot absolutely destroys 5’s already piss-poor level design. I think he also genuinely doesn’t understand boss patterns either. He points at the ease of bosses in 5 as being a net-positive, not realizing how braindead the bosses are.

Easy isn’t bad. Braindead is. Action games aren’t bad. Braindead action is. Mega man 5 is just a really terrible example of both. He’s way too lenient on the Protoman/wily castle too, calling them the best which is frankly really silly.

Ugh, I hate hate hate HATE when people treat Classic series like this. How hard it is to understand that it's merely different, not inferior, and that some of us actually like its way of doing things better than the X and Zero series's?

The strongest enemy to overcome as Megaman fans is our own opinion.

All YouTubers ever: wait, classic can’t wall-jump? Refunding this on steam!!!!!

Unrelated but I’m reminded of this

Context: he means not play on his channel, as in not doing any damageless runs, which is completely fair

I wish you were joking.

Seriously, though, why is there such favoritism towards the X and (to lesser extent) Zero games? Is it really because they're more "actiony" and "edgy"?

I’ve a few reasons.
  1. Inherent bias against “NES-hard” games, treating them as outdated.
  2. “Moar mechanics = moar gooder!!” Mentality. I’ve had a friend who couldn’t stand Megaman because he couldn’t shoot in 8 directions.
  3. Some people love zero. Even though he’s only good in like… two X games ever.
  4. Moar mature = better!!!1!!1
  5. Action games bias, kinda like how some people don’t like turn based.
  6. Lastly, a lot of people can’t grasp the idea of playing a game more than once. Like it’s so foreign to them even though you can theoretically beat all six NES games in one setting if you really want to (i should honestly do that again some day, I found it unique)
Castlevania fandom has a similar issue if you’re interested in hearing.

This sounds about right.

The sixth reason is really funny to me since MM games get better with replays, IMHO.

I'd like to hear more about Castlevania fandom, but we should do that in DMs as to not derail the thread.

Ofc, good call.
