Hey I'm working on mastering Mega Man 5 on RetroAchievements myself! The no death playthrough and the no hit boss rush are looming large in the distance lol.

I've already mastered 2 (NES), World 5 (GB), and am almost done X4 (PS1).

^In stark contrast, I think Mega Man 4 is the worst classic game. Meggles 1 — the original NES game — is my favourite by a long shot.

I always felt the levels were too long with too many minibosses, and found the robot masters really tedious to fight (especially in the final boss rush). I don’t have any particular affection for any of the weapons or levels, either, though the music is still very good.

I meant "Why is MM1 your favorite?"

I think mega man 2 is the worst one of the original trilogy, heck, even the nes games
Agreed!

Same. I mean, we all know deep inside MM4 is the best one.
True

Favorite then?

MM1 is awesome! Makes sense if it’s his favorite. But yeah I’m curious too.

MY BAD!!!! I really like the game's design – all the levels are super fun to go through and really hard, so there's a big incentive to learn the stage layouts and tactically take out enemies as you progress. Unlike a lot of later NES Mega Man games, it's never just moving forward and shooting – you have to make on-the-fly decisions about where you're going, where you're shooting, and why, and I find that really rewarding. The Yellow Devil is a fucker (though I have beaten him without the pause glitch ) and the Magnet Beam thing is really dumb, but I still have a lot of fun playing the game.

Also, and this is a minor thing, but I just really love how the entire game is clearly themed around construction. All the levels are job sites, and all the robot masters are actual utility machines for laying brick, incinerating material, demolition, etc. – I find that more interesting than just "THIS ONE'S THE WATER GUY!!!!" or "THIS ONE'S THE TIME GUY!!!" (They kind of ruined this in Powered Up, and I don't like that version too much.) It's a very unique theme for a video game, especially at that time, but it really makes the game stand out.

I don't really think MM1 is the best one – MM3 is probably what I'd recommend most – but it is the one I go back to the most, and I love it.

You are so cool for saying all this. I wanna hug all mm1 fans.

Megaman 1 is one of my favorites. I think its like the perfect length for a megaman game, and not too many collectibles. I'm not the biggest fan of the shift to each game having 2 castles in the later NES games.

I wouldn't mind 2 castles if only the games would let you save between them.

I remember reading somewhere that Capcom used to have a so-called "5% rule", where they would only make sequels better by 5 percent. I don't know if it's actually true, but if it is, it would explain a lot.
They really fucked up when they made Megaman X2, then.
