Mega Man Megathread

This is a nostalgic nod though.

Back then there was a retro comeback of the 8-bits era.

And it's funny that Capcom had that reputation yet people are praising the remakes of the older RE games despite using the same kind of gameplay we got since 4 (over the shoulder TPS).

If you want a "nostalgic nod" so much, just go play the previous games.

Did they ever finish that MM4-6 version of Wily Wars? ::huhsonic

We already have that. It's called Mega Man 9 and it's terrible.
MM9 didn't really appeal and therefore i didn't play it, but MM 9 and Sonic Mania cannot be compared I don't think. MM9 is a regression of the gameplay back to the days of megaman 2 and visually looks like a Nes game. It doesn't take off where the most recent 2d iterations left off (megaman 8 / Rockman & Forte).

Sonic Mania takes the most recent 2d sonics (Sonic 3 & Knuckles) and pays homage to that while adding some of it's own features but it gives us what would have been the continued evolution in both visuals and gameplay. (The landing spindash was pretty cool). MM9 does the opposite and goes back in time visually and limits the gameplay, removing the slide etc.

A proper evolution of the MM games would be awesome.

Play Megaman 8-Bit Deathmatch, they pulled it off and made it great.
I don't even like a lot of FPSes but I'll play TF out of MM8BDM.
MM 8-bits Death Match and Sonic Robo Blast 2 are undeniably some of the best games in their respective franchises.

I was the first to think that MM couldn't have worked as an Action RPG yet Battle Network worked.
8-bit deathmatch and sonic robo blast 2 look great. Thanks guys!!! Didn't know these existed.

Let's not forget MM Legends too, which is action / adventure /(rpg?) and one of the best games ever made.

I would accept a megaman game as an fps if it was purely a spinoff. Although I did say the same about resident evil and 7 is easily one of my favourites, and 8 was great too, so who knows.

Has anyone here played Mega Man Unlimited? If so, what did you think of it?

Nostalgic throwbacks should go away, actually.
I personally disagree, the Kirby series managed to still be top tier while having nostalgic throwbacks while still renewing itself.

Metroid worked because it wasn't a reboot and the devs loved Metroid DEARLY. They had so much respect for Samus that when they finished the game and autographed some copies, no one signed over her.

That's cool, it does look great with the signatures around Samus.
So if it's not a reboot then you'd back it?

Not played it but it looks great.

What do you guys play to scratch that Megaman/X/Zero itch? Gravity Circuit was pretty good... Any suggestions?

From my own memory, the secret two-player versus mode always seemed a little half-baked. Maybe they meant for it to be something greater, or maybe it was just an asset test for The Power Battle arcade game? Regardless, it makes for an interesting hint that there was something more to see...

I do love the little anecdotes about game development, particularly when it comes to games made by small teams. I've always been a fan of GoldenEye, for example, but knowing that it was made by a core group of about twelve people - several of whom had never even made a video game before - gives me a much greater appreciation for the final product. Mega Man 7 is not so different, in that regard 🙌

I'll leave it to @andyanajonseph's discretion whether to merge this thread or not.

The Mega Man Mega-Thread is a pretty cool place to closely engage with the fans. On the other hand, threads can facilitate parallel subjects and gain attention outside of the Mega-Thread.

I did manage to extract some amount of fun when I playing the VS mode with my brother when we were kids. It felt surprising to discover this mode hidden in it. I also sorta remember winning most matches as Bass, although my prideful memory could be playing tricks on me 😅

Yeah, the history behind the development of certain games can be very intriguing, sometimes even more than the game itself. Especially when the devs leave a personal mark due to what they were going through life at the time.

Also, 3 months is insane.

Honestly yeah, innovation should become the norm, imagine if 9,10 and 11, looked like 7 or 8, honestly 8-bit is cool and all, but the gameplay improved greatly in 7 and 8.

Maybe a good gimmick like 11.

But I wish 11 wasn't in 2.5D. It kinda feels wrong imo. A 32-bits style 2D would've looked timeless.

It looks fine.
Yes, "fine".

But is "fine" enough? I mean Capcom produced the RE Engine and RE2 Remake looked extremely realistic.

I'm not asking for MM12 to be running under the RE Engine but I do miss 2D pixel art.

Like: Sonic Mania, Freedom Planet or even going full hand drawn like graphics like Ori or Hollow Knight.

I'd rather not. There are already enough of pseudo-retro pixel art games, and I don't think Capcom would want to invest into a hand-drawn art style.

I just want MM12 to exist at all LOL
