Mega Man Megathread

Play Megaman 8-Bit Deathmatch, they pulled it off and made it great.
I don't even like a lot of FPSes but I'll play TF out of MM8BDM.
The Doom Engine (and its derivatives) is still great despite the many years that happened.

MM 8-bits Death Match and Sonic Robo Blast 2 are undeniably some of the best games in their respective franchises.

Even that one Castlevania mod convinced me that CV could have worked in 3D.

On a side note I wouldn't mind seeing the equivalent of Sonic Mania but for Megaman as a hommage to the classic series.

Even so, Mega Man is much more inspired by Japanese pop culture than Metroid. Making Mega Man a FPS simply doesn't make sense.
If it worked for Metroid despite being a japanese series then why not MM? Of course, as a spinoff since it's not exactly the same gameplay.

I was the first to think that MM couldn't have worked as an Action RPG yet Battle Network worked.

MM9 was a sequel without reusing previous entries.

But what made it terrible?

Mega Man already has a reputation (whether deserved or not) for being the same thing over and over again. Why would Capcom make a game like this? That's just asking for trouble.

Maybe if they didn't make it always the same bad guy at the end of every game in every series variation.

Oh, it's Dr. Wily/Sigma/Weil again, all of the main cast has remained clueless up until the end while the audience knows exactly who's behind things.

I used to think that, too.

Then I played Rockman & Forte Mirai kara no Chousensha and Super Adventure Rockman.

Suddenly, the idea of Dr. Wily always being the bad guy didn't seem so bad.

This is a nostalgic nod though.

Back then there was a retro comeback of the 8-bits era.

And it's funny that Capcom had that reputation yet people are praising the remakes of the older RE games despite using the same kind of gameplay we got since 4 (over the shoulder TPS).

Zelda is still loved despite Ganon coming in most games. Same with Bowser in Mario or Robotnik in Sonic (in fact people got tired of the kaijus overtaking the place of the last boss in several games).

Maybe Kirby managed to have varied final bosses but then again most of them are technically various forms of Dark Matter.

If you want a "nostalgic nod" so much, just go play the previous games.

Did they ever finish that MM4-6 version of Wily Wars? ::huhsonic

We already have that. It's called Mega Man 9 and it's terrible.
MM9 didn't really appeal and therefore i didn't play it, but MM 9 and Sonic Mania cannot be compared I don't think. MM9 is a regression of the gameplay back to the days of megaman 2 and visually looks like a Nes game. It doesn't take off where the most recent 2d iterations left off (megaman 8 / Rockman & Forte).

Sonic Mania takes the most recent 2d sonics (Sonic 3 & Knuckles) and pays homage to that while adding some of it's own features but it gives us what would have been the continued evolution in both visuals and gameplay. (The landing spindash was pretty cool). MM9 does the opposite and goes back in time visually and limits the gameplay, removing the slide etc.

A proper evolution of the MM games would be awesome.

8-bit deathmatch and sonic robo blast 2 look great. Thanks guys!!! Didn't know these existed.

Let's not forget MM Legends too, which is action / adventure /(rpg?) and one of the best games ever made.

I would accept a megaman game as an fps if it was purely a spinoff. Although I did say the same about resident evil and 7 is easily one of my favourites, and 8 was great too, so who knows.

Has anyone here played Mega Man Unlimited? If so, what did you think of it?

Metroid worked because it wasn't a reboot and the devs loved Metroid DEARLY. They had so much respect for Samus that when they finished the game and autographed some copies, no one signed over her.

That's cool, it does look great with the signatures around Samus.
So if it's not a reboot then you'd back it?

What do you guys play to scratch that Megaman/X/Zero itch? Gravity Circuit was pretty good... Any suggestions?

The Cutting Room Floor is your best friend here ;->

From my own memory, the secret two-player versus mode always seemed a little half-baked. Maybe they meant for it to be something greater, or maybe it was just an asset test for The Power Battle arcade game? Regardless, it makes for an interesting hint that there was something more to see...

I do love the little anecdotes about game development, particularly when it comes to games made by small teams. I've always been a fan of GoldenEye, for example, but knowing that it was made by a core group of about twelve people - several of whom had never even made a video game before - gives me a much greater appreciation for the final product. Mega Man 7 is not so different, in that regard 🙌
