Mega Man Megathread

@fake-kun your status posts convinced me to read the Archie Mega Man comic, and I'm having a blast!
Love the great art and the so bad it's funny writing.

I genuinely love network transmission despite it's obvious and glaring flaws because nostalgia and sunk cost have blinded me to them. I only remember having fun despite it's weird nostalgia for only the most bullshit aspects of the classic series and bizarre inverted difficulty curve.

on another note, I just beat legends 2 for the first time. it was the last number entry for me to beat. next up would be command mission, the wonderswan games, and the misadventures of tronne bonne.

I legitimately enjoy the game, too, though the amount of fun you have with it entirely depends on the chipset you have. (And how good you are at classic Mega Man games.) Without the right chip combo, the game's levels can get absolutely effing excruciating. You kind of have to play the game on its terms, which admittedly is pretty backwards for a Mega Man platformer.

I really like the characters, too, especially in the context of the series' 15th anniversary. Zero.EXE in particular was a very interesting, well-designed take on what that character would be like in the Battle Network universe. I wouldn't want that version of the character to be the only one, but as a one-off character in a spin-off franchise I think he was quite cool.

Obviously it's just a little interquel game they tossed out for an anniversary instalment, but I think NT gets kind of a bad rap from people who aren't playing it right. It's not that bad! Really! Maybe it should have been a handheld game, instead.

I had a much better time once I figured out you need to grind double jump chips from iceman's stage. Also, to this day I really don't understand the protoman fight in that game, and just kind of flail at him for his chips. I can no damage most of the other navi bosses easily enough, even the BS bosses quickman and brightman, used to know how to kick shadowmans ass at SOME point in time... but yeah, you really do need to know what chips are mandatory, and make sure to grind them out asap.

And that would be…?

And that would be…?
The start of elecmans stage with the Gabyoalls that zoom back and forth
Gutsman platforms
Quickman lasers
a giant wall fortress boss
an "alien" boss that shoots bubbles that do WAY too much damage
doing the horizontal ladder drop maneuver
those spikes that clamp on ladders from megaman 4

I'm not going to complain too much on yoku blocks or instakill spikes, because that's just kind of a given, but this game is certainly a bigger fan of the spikes than most, and I recall the placement being VERY annoying in a lot of areas.

all we are really missing is a proper devil boss.

and it's not really a classic series thing, but why do you need to make jumps on the last frame of exiting a slide passage?

“Ian doesn’t write Megaman anymore, he can’t hurt me”
*Newest bumblebkast episode is about Megaman*

People really aren't kidding when they say Battle Network 1 is like a prototype of the rest of the series - finished BN1 around a year ago, and it's unfortunately pretty rough around the edges.
Well, if you even slightly liked it, even 2 is exponentially better feeling

*sees the writer for the Mega Man Zero issue* Oh noooooooo... this is gonna suck so much.

I have a few hours into both BN2 and BN3, and you're definitely right about that. I was mostly surprised that the first game lacks a normal run function without using an escape chip. I also wasn't expecting to feel so lost in the net all the time, but both of those problems I have with the first title seem to be fixed as time goes on.

The gameplay of the BN series is still really unique, and I look forward to the Soul Unisons and Beast Out mechanics found in the later titles.

I was also wondering if anyone here has played Cannon Spike on Dreamcast, and if so, what are your thoughts on the game? It features Mega Man as a (not-so-secret) playable character.

“Ok I’ll swallow my pride and watch the Ian podcast, not like I’ll see anyone else talk about classic anytime soon”
*the podcast episode is only about X*

I find it rather charming me and Fake temporarily traded places, he rants about Ian and I rant about Ariga at the current moment.

Equivalent exchange, you might say. In order for me to read Archie, you have to read Ariga.

I have a confession to make.

I have not played any of the Mega Man Battle Network games.
I remember the first one came out and I was like "This is some kind of tactical rpg?? This isn't Mega Man! Where's the run and gun goodness!?"

I have not played any of the Mega Man Zero games. The art style change from Mega Man X turned me off so SO much I still have trouble looking at that version of Zero.

Am I a fool? Am I a fake fan? I've only beat Mega Man 1-11, Mega Man & Bass, the two arcade games, and Mega Man X 1-6.
DO I FAIL AT LIFE?? ::homerscream
