there are a lot of people out there in studio leadership within xbox who absolutely detest game pass and think it has destroyed the value of their games, think it has taken away the value from all games in general and has been a detriment to the games industry in those people's view, because of how it devalues games
From the most recent episode of the Triple Click Podcast.

Over 30 million Xbox Series consoles have been sold yet their software doesn't sell. Game Pass completely destroyed software sales for Xbox.

Nintendo Switch Online has been 1) a mix of games from at least twenty years ago, some of which were on Virtual Console, 2) a handful of free-with-subscription games that don't have microtransactions, and 3) cloud saves. You wouldn't think this would be a recipe for success. But it isn't a disaster!

If you ask normies, a lot of them would rather pay a subscription and own nothing. They barely even beat any of the games they try out because they don't really care about them.

The Netflix structure has had a pretty massive destructive effect on the population.
The Netflix structure definitely has its problems. There were times where I just could not for the life of me settle on a movie when browsing Netflix. I swear, one time I was scrolling for half an hour before I just gave up and closed it. I cancelled my subscription shortly afterwards and I don't regret it.

That's what happens when you have too many options available at once: People get overwhelmed. Even when you do pick something, it's so easy to jump ship and move on to something else if things don't click right away. And why wouldn't you jump ship when you have hundreds of other options to check out? It's like a dating app, but instead of trying to find a partner you're trying to find the right media for yourself.

I agree on the conclusion that the Netflix structure has created a net negative effect on the way people browse and consume media, but I somewhat disagree that people don't beat games out of a lack of caring. The issue is more-so about time management. With so many options to look at, and with people's free time diminishing as they grow older and have more responsibilites (work, kids, etc), people tend to be a lot pickier about what they invest their spare time in. That's why they're so quick to jump to something else. And that "something else" isn't necessarily a different video game. It can be a movie, a TV show, playing a sport, going outside, spending time with family and friends... anything, really.

I suppose you could say that what I've described is an example of "normies not caring about video games", but you also have to remember that even people who are into video games and buy individual games still don't end up playing or beating most of them. Yes, even people who are really into the hobby have huge backlogs. For example, I have a ton of games in my Steam library that I purchased on sale that I have never touched. I do care about video games... a lot. That's why I'm here on this forum. And I assure you that I do care about those ones that I haven't played yet, and I want to play them, but there's only so many hours in the day and I gotta prioritize shit accordingly. It's why I've recently stopped buying whatever game on my wishlist is on sale, and instead I've been focusing on whittling away at my backlog bit by bit. It's a slow process, but a necessary one.

tldr: Netflix sucks. There are many options for media, possibly too many. Life is fleeting. We're all gonna die someday. Tick tock tick tock. People prioritize things in their spare time accordingly, normies and gamers alike.

I enjoyed Game Pass when I had it and I feel like it's a pretty okay deal if you don't know how to acquire games...alternatively. I did like it for trying out games I'd otherwise never bother with like FIFA. I don't think it really changed my gaming habits, but I've always been someone who struggles to finish games and work through my backlog. Then again, every time I opened the app it felt kinda like "oh yeah, that game...I don't really care enough to play it but it's cool I have access to it...", which is my general response to all streaming services. With games coming and going I feel like its reallyyyy only useful for saving money on $70+ games that aren't going on sale anytime soon (which is why I got it; I wanted to try Starfield during early access since that was the only time I'd have to play). I feel like Xbox has bigger problems with PC cannibalizing their games sales and not having any exclusives but I've never been a big Xbox fan outside of Halo campaign mode so don't take my word for it lmao. Game Pass was one glimmer of something kinda cool in a sea of Microslop mismanagement, so I fully believe some people in charge hated it.

When I said what I did about people not caring to finish games, I meant for that to apply to the more vapid 'normie' audience that would be willing to spend money on a service like gamepass. If I was saying that anyone who doesn't beat a game doesn't care, I'd be shooting myself in the foot lol. Same as you, I have a massive backlog of games, and more than a handful I dropped along the way.

Shoulda been more concise with what I said.

this reminds of back when game rental stores were around still.
rather than buy every single game that release i'd rent them, and barely spent like 20$ a month and played so many different games especially back in the old days most games are done in 2-3 long days.

but anyways i also hate having to deal with so many streaming services
i have netflix and disney plus right now, that's already a lot to keep me busy but i don't have hbo max (all the DC stuff) don't have prime (invincible, the boys, and other stuff i can't recall) and some stuff on appleTV i wanna watch
...of course i find "other ways" to watch them, but quality, and janky untrustworthy sites and lack of subtitle options and resume watching and all the fancy stuff netflix and etc do.

My motto is to either pay once for one game to have it forever or to not have to pay at all later down the line.

What I do is pirate all of the games I might like, and if I like them enough, I buy them, Try before buy if you will.

But yeah, Game Pass is a joke to me. Paying a subscription fee for games you'll never own? What's even worse is mobile gacha games... Paying for a chance to get a buncha of digital items that will eventually disappear when the servers shut down. Who in their right mind?

Closing, merging, or selling studios that were acquired to create Game Pass fodder, will transform the subscription inevitable.

Maybe, they will remove premiere first party content entirely in their new ‘heavy hitters / back to the roots’ future; and dispose of the Ultimate tier (which it’s looking unattractive).
