Hot takes

I love Spike and all the work he does, but the Vita library is such dogshit. It makes sense there’s a lot of Vita games being posted on the repo bc the other systems’ catalogs are so full (again, thank you SO MUCH), but ohhhhh my god I did NOT miss out not having a vita.

Maybe part of the charm missing is my not really considering the Vita very “retro”. A bigger part is probably that the vita catalog is dogshit.

I have what I think may be a good take:

A lot of stories in video games and VNs *do* suck. If you ever find yourself unfulfilled with the narratives or writing in games, you should probably find a book to enjoy, or pick up a title with more game than read (like a puzzler or Tetris or a platformer or something). This is part of what got me more into retro games the past few years.

If anyone’s looking for a good meaty game to read, please look up Pentiment, especially fans of European history (takes place around the same time as KCD). Top 5 game for me.

I love the Vita, but the main appeal for me (and many others it seems) is the hackability and homebrew potential. You’re totally right that there’s a lot of weeaboo shovelware stuff for it.

Kingdom Hearts music is straight up ass apart from the title screen.

Peanuts, when used in cooking, sucks and makes the food taste like wood.
(It’s delicious in every other form tho)

Green Day has been dropping an album every few years pretty consistently. Last year's release, Saviors, was really good, save for the first two tracks that just feel like Revolution Radio again.

I'm an elder zoomer and have been a fan since I was a teenager. Honestly, there's not really an outright bad album in the bunch. Of particular note, the less polished, bratty sound of Dookie is a delightful time capsule of 90's rock...when I can understand what the fuck Billie Joe is saying...and Warning shows that Green Day is just as capable with acoustic guitars and a generally lighter sound. 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours sounds pretty rough in places, but this is a compilation of very early Green Day before even Kerplunk, so it's excusable.

There is a tons of them indeed. Since American Idiot they honestly suck, their golden ages are the '90.
And 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours it's the best the best thing they ever made.

You're right, but I still kinda lump Utena into the whole Magical Girl Deconstruction thing too (as does TVTropes, which has a whole page about it!). Utena, apparently, wasn't even the first show to deconstruct magical girl tropes. But the guy who made it was a director on the original series of Sailor Moon and specifically said Utena was created to deconstruct the genre, so. (He's also a fucking weirdo [who of course was in his mid-30s when he made Utena] who puts on a ridiculous persona and has directed nothing but deconstructive little girl cartoons over his entire life, so I'm 100% still counting him as a creep and his dumb show that I've never seen as quite poo.)
Revolutionary Girl Utena had me squinting and rubbing my temples and shit—I didn’t see it as any sort of deconstruction as much as I saw it as deeply strange and, like, gross? I don’t know man I tried to suspend my disbelief and everything but had a difficult time taking it seriously. It was a wild ride.

I do love Takarazuka Revue though.

Oh yeah I nearly forgot how awesome the hardware itself was. Pretty handheld too

Me neither, who popularised it?
Capcom with RE4. But to be honest, I think it works great in Resident Evil and games like it that are slightly slow. I have it in melee action games like nu-God of War where you feel like a moving turret it’s all the weird strafing around.

I think Gears of War might have been one of the first big games to use and popularize that type of camera style
Definitely.

Femboys are goated.
I'm curious why they are so appreciated by people that still ends up insisting on the fact they're straight.

Peanuts, when used in cooking, sucks and makes the food taste like wood.

They can be delicious in Thai dishes.

Math is useful, you are the useless
I think the big problem is that at school they make you do algebra and equations without even bothering teaching kids techniques for everyday calculus (like when doing shopping).

What's the point of the pythagorean theorem outside of specific cases?

At least school should give more real life applications for arithmetic and geometry to help visualise them.

I believe it was for a more "cinematic" approach to video game (and while RE4 still kept the turret-like movements of the older games you're right, it is better fit for slower paced games).

I think that this kinda camera POV works pretty well for Third Person Shooters, but I defo agree that I don't like it in Action/Hack n Slash games.

i don't know much about femboys. based on their appearance, they are guys without the male parts. could be all sorts of reasons for their appeal. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i'm not a big fan of peanuts, so no comment.

i wasn't given much info on algebra and calculus when i was in grade school besides, "you need to know this to go to college".
apparently pokemon games use nasa level algebra for the damage formulas from what i've seen in screenshots and videos of it. it looks insane and more kids would be into it if it was brought up in school that games use this kind of shit in them.

for the last point: for people who love triangles? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I thought they were androgynous/feminine guys who could pass as female.

I think that it started as a meme for anime but then again bishonen existed long before.

While I understand that it's useful for higher levels if the base learning isn't done well then the rest will be struggling.

True hahaha! Game devs back then were another beast.

i agree with all of these statements. ? for you.
i'm pretty sure you made someone's day with the triangle pic.

I was gonna comment they do in elementary with problems, but i remembered some of them are like "I have this 10502030230520 M cake and i want to share it equally with my 400000 brothers, ¿How can i do it?"

that was like the absolute most common math problem. basically, how much can you divide one number by another? it's alright the first couple of times. after that, i rather they just wrote the equation without words. its maff class. not english class.

It’s a reimagining of Final Fantasy 1 as an action game, but it’s got that shitty unironic teenager edge from the 2000s all over it. It’s incredibly corny (in a bad way I think, like a non-self aware DMC).
It’s the brainchild of a 50 year old chuuni with unlimited power, Nomura himself.

Here’s an iconic clip:
This is great. Gone buy it once I upgrade my PC.

Some consoles/handhelds are geared towards a certain kind of audience. You like platformers? Play some NES games. You like JRPGs? Try some SNES games. You like sports games? Try the Genesis. The Vita, despite being released some time after that was a common trend, is quite geared towards a JRPG and anime fanbase. It was not that exclusively (as was also true for the aforementioned consoles), but there was a noticeable trend towards that. So if you aren't into those genres, it's probably not the system for you. If you are, then it's not so bad (although most games got ports elsewhere).

Now I will argue that the hardware for the Vita sucked. Sony tried yet another proprietary media scam, driving up the cost to a ridiculous degree, and they ate dirt as a result. It doesn't matter how great the rest of the system is when getting it to function requires the physical equivalent of buying mandatory overpriced DLC.

As for game writing, I agree for most cases. Most game makers aren't skilled writers; most skilled writers are not game makers. We get some of the best games when the developers realize this problem and try to fix it by hiring the right people. And even then, this doesn't always work.

To make matters worse, the audience kind of sucks at embracing good writing, and tends to embrace bad writing if they think it'll provide a good game regardless of if they've played it or not. (See all the people who initially screamed bloody murder at reviewers for negative reviews of Metroid: Other M and Resident Evil 5 based mainly on terrible writing... until they actually played them for themselves and pretended they never said those games had to be GOAT-level.) So we're stuck in a situation where the industry doesn't really need to give us better writing because some part of the audience will lap up whatever they throw at us.

Do you know if the European localizations were different than the American for the Fire Emblem games? I know Splatoon (and Mario Party for some reason) had a completely different, and more accurate, script and they seem to be more accurate while still having a personality of their own so I’m curious if Treehouse just was absent from all European Nintendo translations at the time.

I can confirm theres some small differences between awakenings us and eu script

Small stuff really, a couple words

Strangely enough Tharja's booty shot from the beach dlc isnt censored in the eu version but nowi complimenting her tits in a special dualogue is

There isn't, Geofront fan-translated Zero and Azure and NISA used that script as base for their official release.
I don't like Geofront's translation, they actually put current-year memes inside a game from 2010.View attachment 22255

I always thought people hating on Guy Fieri was lame. It always felt like an easy target to make yourself feel better. Schoolyard tactics.
Yeah he always seemed like a chill guy. I was addicted to DDD when it aired in my country a few years ago, he always showcased to local food culture in all the episodes.
