Hot takes

Perfect bad example of reusing old stuff:

Bringing back the tanuki leaf for mario 3d land but it can't friggin fly, and you don't even fly with style

Bringing back an old thing with a twist can be great, I think if its just the old thing but not nearly as good people arent gonna be swayed by it. Not a game comparison but theres reboots that failed because of that

Ive heard the theory that ppl like colors just bc the previous games were bad? Im not into 3d sonic games that arent robo blast 2 so I cant say

I do adore RB2, that game truly feels like the megadrive games in 3d

Oh shit it's the I'VE COME TO KILL CHAOS! game?
The one and only…

Like I said in the FF thread the other day, I think it’s kind of awful, but if you’re into Team Ninja games similar to Nioh you could give it a try, if you can stomach the writing and characters.
I thought it was an almost offensively embarrassing take on FF1 when I was first showed off so I’m super biased against it myself but check it out if you’re interested in the sheer novelty of the idea.

It’s the brainchild of a 50 year old chuuni with unlimited power, Nomura himself.
I have quite a love/hate relationship with Nomura.

While I kinda like when he makes original stories with a street style (TWEWY) I think he should've stayed far from Final Fantasy as a whole.

Even Kingdom Hearts barely showed FF despite being marketed as a FF x Disney crossover game.

Hell its interesting how it's set in FF1's world

Is the combat more action or rpg?

Yeah it's hilarious and It's probably way funnier than whatever was in the original script;
Of course, throwing away the original script and making stuff up is not great and it's disrespectful of the original writer's vision, which should be adapted and localized in a faithful (but not literal) way when translating.

That being said, if throwing away the script and making stuff up makes the writing better I'm all for it actually: people always say that they want "faithful" translations but then praise the hell out of the script of games like Trails in the Sky, where Xseed made up most of the script and changed the protagonist entire personality (ironically enough, It's a Falcom game like Popful mail).
You see, people tend to be somewhat hypocritical about this, they don't care how faithful the script is if it's better than the original's (Basically every Falcom game localized by Xseed, Final Fantasy IX, Skies of Arcadia ecc.)
Most of these people don't know if its better or worse and unless you're someone who has played both versions of one of these games idk why you'd feel comfortable saying it.

I think its more accurate to say that "having a more accurate translation/localization sounds like a better idea and since most people don't know the beginning of how to read Japanese, they'll never really know how accurate or inaccurate something is until the internet tells them."

Because really thats the main reason it has become so controversial lately. There are just more people online pointing out how almost every Japanese game has liberties taken with the English script whereas 10+ years ago it wasn't a common talking point unless the translation was clearly dogshit. The old Working Designs scripts stood out even at the time for being so clearly and obviously not based on the original scripts all that much.

Fwiw games like Trails in the Sky and Skies of Arcadia do a pretty good job of keeping the story and personalities of the characters in tact. I haven't played all of Trails 1 in japanese tbf but from the 10-15 hours I put into it a couple years back there were very clearl liberties being taken but the core of most scenes were kept in tact (keyword being most but still).

And yea I more or less agree that so long as the core of script is maintained, I don't mind advanced liberties despite preferring games to be a bit more faithful. If I wrote something and heavy liberties/changes were constantly made when localizing it elsewhere I'd be pretty damn bummed.

Its mostly just a matter of where someone draws the line.

I kinda liked the concept of branching paths in a Sonic game on paper. It's just not executed well at all.

Same with having a Bomberman game that is more like a RPG/Adventure if it's done correctly.

GTA tonned down too much (even if the series has always been a parody of the USA culure), same with the Saints Row Reboot...

I think that "self-aware humour" will fundamentally age worse than edgy in some aspects because I think that a sincere story will always be more engaging.

Also I'd add that video
since this trend kinda started in the early 90's.

Ah darn, someone beat me up to it as I got busy.

Honestly I think that realistically in a handheld 3D game you couldn't make your character fly or else it would have to render too many things or break the level design.

3D Land is still fine for its more closed level design but I do wish they added a new power up (at least World had the cat and the cherries).

A new twist on an old thing can please both nostalgic people while still having a freshness to it.

While it may have been true in some aspects Colours was Nintendo exclusive compared to Unleashed HD and 2006 (the latest game that was on a Nintendo without a major change like Unwiished was Heroes in '03 which was over half a decade ago). I think that Colours despite its simpler level design and story was decent and worked for what it was.

Basically like a lost Saturn Sonic game. There's a homebrew 32-X demo made for it.
I get flying in would break the levels
then dont use the tanuki leaf
3d world did the right thing and had a new powerup instead

Ive said it many times, self aware is the most dull draining thing at this point. Being terrified someone will call you cringe is so spineless, have the balls to be earnest man

And yess I say the edgy 2000s but it was more like 95-05

I miss how crass and offensive the ps2 games were, 4 grounded it and almost tried to be a serious crime drama; 5 was a little more like the old days but nowhere near as wacky and in your face. It was vulgar and had more detailed blowjobs and the internet was neat, but everything else was lesser

Didnt know about the 32x game ill check it out!

It’s a pretty hardboiled Japanese action game with some RPG elements, the closest I can compare it to is probably Nioh like I said, since it’s made by the same team. It’s got a pretty decent Job system too iirc.

I feel like I should give it another chance seeing as how I was so disappointed with FF16.

Here’s some old promo thing where they show of the combat:

I still think that 3D Land did a pretty good job since the suit allows you to attack and slow down the fall, like the Super Cape.

I also think that the wider level design in 3D World was detrimental imo compared to the smaller areas.

Mario is about platforming for me, power-ups are a bonus.

I've said it many times, self aware is the most dull draining thing at this point.
It only works when you make a small nod to a very specific thing that fans would know.

Sadly that humour is aimed at people who are not fans to begin with (MCU's main audience is absolutely not comic book fans).

Being terrified someone will call you cringe is so spineless, have the balls to be earnest man
Or maybe the writers are ashamed of themselves so for comic book movies they tell how ridiculous the names are or that the costumes are too colourful when suspension of disbelief and accepting it's not the real world can work.

And yess I say the edgy 2000s but it was more like 95-05.
I think 2006-2008 was a transitional phase for less edgy stuff.

Ratchet PS4 is too smooth and lighhearted...

I haven't played GTA V but it felt more like 4.5 than a real evolution like how we went from III to IV.

Didn't know about the 32x game ill check it out!
It's rough tho. I do appreciate the effort.

I think you can be a superhero fan without being into comics, just like how someone can be a Lord of the Rings fan just by watching the Jackson films, and how there are gorillions of people who love anime but haven’t read a manga in their life.

Just different mediums for stories.

I'm not sure how that relates to Ikaruga's point.

I quoted the wrong part, it was more to do with the ”Sadly that humour is aimed at people who are not fans to begin with” but looking at it now I think I just took it out of context and misinterpreted it. My b!

I appreciate the ones for the first two 3ds fire emblem games, they really show just how up their own ass nintendo tree house is where they changed it so much it was practically a different game
Oh yeah fuck the Three house
Thankfully there's fanmade translations for the vita Trails games too
There isn't, Geofront fan-translated Zero and Azure and NISA used that script as base for their official release.
I don't like Geofront's translation, they actually put current-year memes inside a game from 2010.

Do you know if the European localizations were different than the American for the Fire Emblem games? I know Splatoon (and Mario Party for some reason) had a completely different, and more accurate, script and they seem to be more accurate while still having a personality of their own so I’m curious if Treehouse just was absent from all European Nintendo translations at the time.

I love Spike and all the work he does, but the Vita library is such dogshit. It makes sense there’s a lot of Vita games being posted on the repo bc the other systems’ catalogs are so full (again, thank you SO MUCH), but ohhhhh my god I did NOT miss out not having a vita.

Maybe part of the charm missing is my not really considering the Vita very “retro”. A bigger part is probably that the vita catalog is dogshit.

I have what I think may be a good take:

A lot of stories in video games and VNs *do* suck. If you ever find yourself unfulfilled with the narratives or writing in games, you should probably find a book to enjoy, or pick up a title with more game than read (like a puzzler or Tetris or a platformer or something). This is part of what got me more into retro games the past few years.

If anyone’s looking for a good meaty game to read, please look up Pentiment, especially fans of European history (takes place around the same time as KCD). Top 5 game for me.

I love the Vita, but the main appeal for me (and many others it seems) is the hackability and homebrew potential. You’re totally right that there’s a lot of weeaboo shovelware stuff for it.

Kingdom Hearts music is straight up ass apart from the title screen.

Oh yeah I nearly forgot how awesome the hardware itself was. Pretty handheld too

Me neither, who popularised it?
Capcom with RE4. But to be honest, I think it works great in Resident Evil and games like it that are slightly slow. I have it in melee action games like nu-God of War where you feel like a moving turret it’s all the weird strafing around.

I think Gears of War might have been one of the first big games to use and popularize that type of camera style
Definitely.

I believe it was for a more "cinematic" approach to video game (and while RE4 still kept the turret-like movements of the older games you're right, it is better fit for slower paced games).
