Let's bring it back, less unnecessarily depressing, and do some takes on fictional stories. Okay?
Sunstone is the best comic you can read about an S&M relationship. Doubly so with a lesbian relationship. You can learn more about S&M from there than anything from the
Fifty Shades of Gray trilogy. You filthy piece of
Twilight fanfiction. Why do people get invested in that series again?
The
John Carter of Mars books are glorified Isekai stories (not an insult nor being derogatory here). With John Carter being the clueless proto-shounen protagonist. No harem though, and he only cares for the one woman. Any other woman that gains an interest, he gently lets down. Making this franchise better than a majority of them and even some from the past.
Even before Frank Miller went off the deep end, I don't like a lot of his work. That includes his "good work".
I never found much interesting in
Breaking Bad nor
Game of Thrones. Glad I didn't stick around, and found so much better stuff.
Defenders (2017) I find better than the first two
Avenger films.
Games that focus too much on realism forget to have actual gameplay or focus too much on details, when there is not much room for anything else. See
Hellblade II or
Ryse: Son of Rome.
The reason Capcom can get away with it in games under the RE Engine
, is because they have actual gameplay, story, characters, distinct visual styles, or at least most of these to fall back on.
Devil May Cry 5, any of the RE Engine games, and the upcoming
Pragmata and
Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
For another Sony example, see the
Ghost games. Both of which that gets this right, but still remember to have a distinct art style and coloring that isn't "real is brown/dull grey".
I can actually agree with Yahtzee on this.
Sunset Riders, Wild Guns (SNES),
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, and
Evil West are all better than the
Red Dead Redemption franchise.
Beat-em-ups are not in "arrested development". It's nice when one does a change up that works or that is something different, but that doesn't mean every single game should follow it. Otherwise, you just run into the same problem gamers and especially professional critics complain about copying a genre blindly. There is nothing wrong with having an old school style brawler, that's just fun, but doesn't innovate. As long as the game is good and the loop is addicting in a good way, then I'm not going to cry about it. It's been been proven so many times people like just having a straight up arcade brawler that are straight to the point and don't waste time on exploration. Especially when that exploration doesn't work or has the laziest backtracking. A majority of the people in the comments seem to agree with me, and disagree heavily with the person in the video. His arguments aren't really saying anything new.And it's the crap you would hear from people who either don't like the genre or think they know everything that needs to be done without much backup or superfluous reasons. Fuck off KC. You almost always have the shittiest takes between you and Marty.
In addition:
Expecting
SIFU to be the new high bar, and for every brawler to clear its impossible and imaginary expectations. All you're doing person in the video is setting yourself up for failure and constant disappointment. We are already have a few 3D games coming out similar to it, but they don't do the aging thing.m, and while challenging, they look to be easier. I want variety in my brawlers, but I don't want every single to follow the leader. That's what led us down to ruin and other genres in the first place.
The Leon sections are just as great as Grace's sections, and both complimented each other perfectly. Leon's Racoon segments are exactly what I asked for and they don't need to drag on that long. Especially when you know what you're doing and know exactly where you're supposed to go.
Health bars should be allowed to exists; especially in the beat'em up genre. Unless you're
Double Dragon, but even
Double Dragon Gaiden decided to bring in the enemy health meters to great effect. Not every game needs them, but you're mook or boss better be showing physical damage. I am glad health bars never left. 7th generation tried to make them disappear for the sake of "immersion and realism", but everyone got tired of that shit. I got tired of it at day one.
