This assumes there's a baseline of charisma to be found within Kratos, forced myself to finish all the psp and ps2 games, and played most of the way through ascension. He is angry because, and ambitious because..... of reasons??

Ryu Hayabusa speaks with his eyes and has an actual job as a ninja of his clan, he has purpose implied by showing and not telling, Bayonetta is like the antithesis of Kratos, all style but there's lore and personality that I found amusing in the first game(haven't played the others) and finally Dante, there's four versions of Dante, the post Leon version in the first game, stoic starey man in 2, screamo Dante in 3, and the Dante found in 4 and 5 are closer to the guy in the first one blended with the silly of the third game and some elements of hero Dante from the first game.

This new game seemed like it is trying to be something completely different and new in a very original looking game world, like old european Faery aesthetic, like Folklore on the ps3, but giving Kratos a presence as opposed to just dropping him, but then they went and sh*t the bed with the talking cube thing and it's only going to get worse from there.

The boss battle looked fun but you just know the dialogue with the cube is gonna be insufferable, imagine replacing the "boy" with a smarmy cube, what's she going to say "cube"?

He's f**king everywhere now I will say though that he's good voice actor, he played Clark Kent pretty well at least in terms of making him sound human, and not heroic, but awkward,.

He's ambitious because he is/was a Spartan General..

He's angry because Ares tricked him into slaughtering his wife & daughter, which was then (later) compounded by being used by the Gods & Goddesses (and eventually Titans) without relieving him of his nightmares & constant mental torment..

It's not exactly Shakespeare, but then again– murderous rage isn't exactly a subtle or multi-dimensional emotion...
The entire Greco-Roman Pantheon is full of extreme archetypes, so Kratos's blind rage works well for what it is within that particular setting..

I guess by slower I meant methodical, something with a form of pacing that isn't just "combo up the wazoo" or "QTE to win". To be honest the only 3D action games I enjoy are Monster Hunter ones, so yeah.

If you're looking for something else, that's also more methodical and grounded, try out No More Heroes 1 & 2. More so the first game, but by the third game, while still grounded compared to other action games, does get more over the top, ut in a good way. Evil West is a good alternative as well that is a shooter and brawler, hybrid. I actually do enjoy that game more than both Norse games. EW was pulling a few things from those games while still doing its own thing.

Yes, the Doomguy did all of that just for a "pet rabbit" (which is less bad than losing a wife and child objectively) yet was done in a much better manner.

Not entirely sure of Kratos suddenly having a kid out of nowhere in the PS4 game but I guess they wanted him to evolve as a character.

He did loose comrades in each entry. The intro to D64 pretty much implies this and that he has PTSD in intermission narration between levels.

That was pretty much their mission statement from the start. More so Corey. There were arguments about it, because even most of the team got sick and tired of Kratos. They all wanted to just have a new character in general, but Barlog stood his ground. Even the top executives at Sony were doubting him. Yet it worked, now those same fat cats refuse to let it go. Though at least Santa Monica are allowed a lot more creative freedom to do their own thing.

Travis Touchdown and Jack Cayman are the also the better versions of Kratos, or of the Type V Anti-Hero/ Villain Protagonist role. Travis especially.

The best kind of perspective. Travis Touchdown is the most developed third person, hack and slash, action game character ever made, and the most consistent. Seriously, see how he started in original, and all the way up to the final game in the time line. Travis Strikes Again included.
