Global degradation of gaming knowledge and respect of the hobby as a whole

I'm struggling to figure out what I said that was so wrong or offensive to you, because you sound like I wronged you somehow.

I've been all for exploration of retro gaming my entire life, even in this topic I said people should explore retro games, learn about new games, expand their experiences. I don't see how that's related to being an expert or not. Nobody expects someone to be an expert at all times. But a person isn't a gamer if they have played 3-4 games in their lives, however if they start exploring, leaning games sure then they're becoming one slowly but surely.

Over time they'll learn more and more, understand gaming history more and so forth.

A person not knowing what a 3ds is and refusing to learn what it is, isn't a gamer, it's a person who just casually plays Tomodachi Life.

But a person who plays Tomodachi Life and then goes on to explore more games from different genres, learns about different consoles, doesn't reject knowledge when shared with them slowly becomes a gamer over time.
You didn't say anything wrong, it just seemed strange assuming things about me, but maybe i wasn't clear in the first message.

To the middle part of the message i completely agree, I just don't think putting information that don't come from curiosity of the person is the best way to welcome someone into a hobby, but maybe it's my personal experience.

Would you rather have someone explain how everything on a camera work and then shoot or shoot and learn by making bad photos? there's no right answer in my opinion, and i think the same can be said about games.

Maybe i made a bad example about tomodachi life, what I was trying to say it's the it needs to come first from the outside the need to know more, play better, be more mindful about games and their story, I don't know if people you were talking about earlier post were curious about retrogaming or just remebering playing one gaming and wanted to share a memory.

About the part of being called a gamer i actually agree with you, but I think there are too much implication that come from deciding whos a gamer and whos not. Even if we decide a way to determine who's what, then? People outside can just ignore or see the gaming community as a closed place, and from people inside can be seen as a performative act. I dont know, just one hypothesis

I personally prefer 4:3 because of my eyesight for horizontal games, but a specifically patched 4:3 game that runs properly in 16:9 is completely fine in my book.
my problem is when games get stretched and everything looks like ass yet nobody notices it but if you dare suggest otherwise you're the bad guy.

If the game is running in 16:9 natively and the sprites and art isn't distorted, there are no gameplay issues, why not, I'm ok with that. I wouldn't do it myself because it doesn't benefit me but it's ok.
Oh, of course, stretched widescreen is not a good idea.

And some games may break the immersion when seen in widescreen (because of the edges of a texture) but thankfully most are fine.

I'll drop a random fun fact here, but Street Fighter III: Double Impact had an in-built actual widescreen mode in the debug menu of the arcade. This is the SF that came right before Third Strike.
What's really interesting is, while looking very pretty, it actually disrupts the way supers and specific mechanics work completely. The game is from 1999 btw.

I understand why it's only experimental.

We're in this weird/creepy reality now where "everyone's a winner" and it's very disturbing to me. It's OK to not be a gamer just like it's ok for me to not be a music or movie geek whatever the correct terms are for those just because I listen to some music and watch a movie or two once in a blue moon.
Now I'm confused because it's not a competition (or at least neither a speedrun nor e-sport) so there's no winner nor loser when enjoying a game per se.

I'd say that tryharders and people that plays just for bragging rights or to feel superior about something may be the ones actually making it worse for everybody else.

My point is that it's ok to enjoy games even if you are not a gamer per se, you don't need the label the moment you touch your first video game or two. Let the hobby develop for you, if you learn enough, explore enough you become one, if not you are not a gamer but enjoy dabbling in the occasional game or two.

I don't think about the gamer thing too deepily.
To me, if I can hold a conversation with a person about games and they give feedback and show interest and have played more than a few games NON MOBILE/non flash, know more than like 3 consoles they're a gamer.

Their knowledge is key, for example.
A guy bragging how big a gamer he is to me, then tells me he only plays GTA and FIFA and when I try to engage him about other gaming stuff, he blanks out? I don't even consider him a casual gamer.

But someone who sticks to AAA games only, plays GTA, FIFA, all that nonsense, but has played a good number of games, knows about other what other consoles exist, not everything but enough, they're a casual gamer.

Their favorite game is whatever random popular title they are playing, they stare at you blankly when you try talking about less popular modern or retro games, but they know what a DS, 3DS, Nintendo Wii and Switch are, they don't know what a PCEngine/TurboGrafx or god forbid SEGA SG-1000 is, but they know enough to be a casual gamer.

Interestingly enough tho, that one guy I brought up in this topic and the other, the one who knows little to nothing about gaming, who didn't know and couldn't understand video game genres? Well HE is a casual gamer status too now I'd say.
The lowest of the low casual gamer tier but he is one now.

This unfortunate happens with a lot of things, there are always going to be people who come along and ruin it. There’s nothing we can do about it, it just is what it is, it really does ruin things for the people who are truly passionate about it.

Resident Evil was eye opening for me. And when I corrected them on actual plot and gameplay details, they ganged up and told me I was wrong. And god forbid your opinion isn't "top 5 RE!" or "GOTY!" because you'll catch hell there too.

I can relate. I had this happen with Nirvana and a relative a decade younger than me that was in diapers when they hit it big. You can't win. ::sailor-embarrassed

I think this problem is in part thanks to younger people watching streams more than they play the games themselves. They don't have personal experience playing the game. The streamer may only play as one character or do the most common route, miss important pickups or obnoxiously talk over dialogue.

One of the reasons I don't watch full playthroughs of games I can't currently play is because I know I can't get the full experience and would rather wait until I can actually play the game myself.

Words, words, words...
Too many words to explain a simple concept.
It has nothing to do with gaming.
Modern societal "norms", political correctness, wokeness and the new
cancel culture are all pushing EVERYTHING into the desired one large amalgamation
of just "ONE". I have no other way to describe the colorless, raceless, featureless, flavorless,
sexless lump of Nothing that is meant to consume EVERYTHING. How do you describe the un-describable?

Maybe the closest analog to what I mean is a Gelatinous Cube from D&D

God I'm glad I grew up when all the Nirvana fame was over. Just fucking hate their music and people overrate Kurt Cobain to a disgusting degree.
Can't imagine growing up with the music from around that era then they become popular and having to put up with their fans. Even the remnants now around my age are terrible to put up with and they're "casual"

annoyed when normies stormed in and took over the hobby. Even more annoyed when CoD dude bros did it. I could even kind of tolerate the woke mob. but this latest flood is different.
The "woke" mob barely did anything and that was grifter rhetoric that took advantage of everything. Do you even actually know what that word actually means?

Gaming wasn't afraid to be multicultural and had variety. All it did was just expand in the late 2000s and 2010s. There's a game out there for everyone, from all walks of life, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Grifters of nearly any kind, don't care about the art of gaming as a whole and just using it has their own soapbox because they can't accept women, LGBT, or people of different skin color and races.

Also, the "normies" had been in since day one with Japanese consoles releasing into the West and most definitely by the start of the 5th generation. Like it or not.

As for you @Sonic Boomer, don't let other people who don't enjoy the hobby or fake it bother you or get into their skin. Obviously, be direct to people who are wrong and do it in the most constructive fashion you can, but if you're in places that are already full of assholes, bitches in box-stands, and fuck heads. Just stay away from them and don't bother engaging. They only bother to be controversial or combative. They're the types that spend their whole day on youtube and social media and do nothing else. They're not even worth talking to, because they don't know how to act, or they don't wanna act like an actual decent person, and think only acting like an ass is the best way to live life.

Back then at least with my experience, fans were just fine, it was more after he died that the usual propping happened. I like Nirvana but I don’t hold them or Kurt as godly figures or anything but yeah it wasn’t really that bad when he was alive, it was when he died that people got a little over the top. That’s normal though, someone famous dies and people act like they were better than they were when that’s not always the case.

Ah, that makes sense. Look I don't hate the music that much its just that subgenre is not really my favorite and I find it less vocally/musically rich than contemporaries from that era, but I get it has an audience.
Most people I know now who are Nirvana fans they're just so god damn insufferable with how much they shove it down your throat and try to act intellectually superior often. The t-shirts, the same songs (they don't even delve deep into his library) and this is gonna be a whole side-tangent, but when people will say shit like how he stopped playing at some concert cause he caught a girl getting abused in the crowd.

Like, no offense, but I'm supposed to get on my knees he did the bare minimum human decency act to not play and point out to people that was happening? Treat him as some saint or deity? Fuck off.

Haha yes I totally get it!

Grunge music was and still is not really my thing, they were kinda the rarity for me in that regard in terms of taste but overall, I kinda hated the grunge era so I wasn’t too upset when it went away lol

Lots of people go on about his lyrics and I just don’t get it, what’s so special?

With the lights out, it's less dangerous

I feel stupid and contagious

I like the song but I’m not sure what’s so jaw dropping here lol I wouldn’t put him in a top ten list for anything.

I've had some Nirvana fans tell me my taste is trash cause I listen to Dio and his lyrics make no sense but Nirvana lyrics is genius. Still trying to find the genius in them.
Also there's more than just lyrics, its a really dumb criticism from them to begin with.

Da fawk, Dio is a legend.

Music fans gets under my skin sometimes lmao I know people like their own thing and that’s cool, I know I like stuff others don’t but at least don’t be a biased knob about it. Dio > Kurt and it’s not even close.

I really never cared for the grunge genre. I really didn't know the name of it until it was pretty much near dead. The most fun I ever had with grunge was literally the Comix Zone soundtrack. Both the in game music, and the official soundtrack remix, I found better than anything Nirvana ever did. The only crime song I really like that's not from a video game is "Dem Bones". The only reason I know that song is because of the Street Fighter II Animated Movie.

Honestly I love the sound of that. I might just try and make it myself! I need a good slapping and Will Smith refuses to do it for me.
