Global degradation of gaming knowledge and respect of the hobby as a whole

Totz.

I used to get BULLIED over my love for gaming at a time when it still wasn't "socially acceptable" to broadcast that your afternoon may involve shooting demons in the face with the Super Shotgun.

The switch from offline (private, casual, deeply personal) to online (communal, massive, update-your-AOL-status-with) gaming opened a lot of doors, but it also allowed for certain elements to entrench themselves with as if they had been the keepers of the flame all-along.

Gaming has come a long way and it's mostly been great, but tell me of any ride that hasn't either been hijacked or had a bandwagon hitched to it.
*SIGHS* It's almost like a mandatory thing for any hobby that grows into the mainstream.
please dont say "totz".. god I hate that word ever since Funimation dubs would put that in almost every one of their animes.. ugh.. even the good ones Id hear that word and go crazy..

and I'm still in purgatory and technoMF got BANNED because the mods think we're the same person.
Their board looks like it hasn't been upgraded since 2006 — no wonder they can't tell IPs apart.

But assuming two people to be the same dude just because they hail from the same place is the kind of shitshow that you'd think would be extinct by now. It may even run afoul of some actual laws XD

>Why do you care that people are getting stuff wrong and doing stuff wrong?
>Just do your own thing... why do you care?
>Why are you paying attention to discourse in the public space?
>What are you even doing in the public space?! You should just go back to your private space and never show your face outside ever again. The public space just agitates your 'tism. You are not ready for public space.
>Some people enjoy doing stuff wrong on purpose.
>Actually you're the only one who's wrong for wanting to correct people who are wrong.
>It's just video games anyway, a petty inconsequential little hobby.
>Let me guess, if people started reading books upside down for shits and giggles, you'd have another one of your hissy-fits...
>It's your own fault for not having put yourself in a position where you benefit from a breakdown in public discourse
>So what if people say things that are wrong? Everyone's entitled to their own opinion...
>Objective truth is actually an illusory mass psychosis. Facts actually don't exist and we live in a fluid world of pure subjectivity, where down is up depending on any person's moment to moment mood.
>Also, everyone lives in a vacuum, people actually are islands unto themselves and people who disagree should simply never interact.
>That's a weird hill to die on. Why not crawl into a hole instead?

>Hey, excuse me, your shoelace is untied, be careful not to trip and fall.
>Why are you staring at my shoelaces you weirdo?! Get away from me!

This is a weird ass thread

Oh nooo other people aren't turbo nerds like I am about a thing I really like oh nooo

Are you like 12 or something, I'm almost 30 years old I have more important shit in my life to care about than people who are casually into my hobbies not being as hardcore into them as I am. I got bills and taxes to pay.

I think you're making a big fuss about a rather vocal minority in gaming.

Yes, there are people who aren't hardcore or don't have deep knowledge about something and it's nice to learn but in the same time I think getting upset at someone for not being too much into a hobby isn't healthy on the long run.

This is a very pretentious thread. Of course people aren't gonna be super knowledgeable of video games cause video games are an expensive hobby. Most people could only get 1-2 games a year in the past and maybe some rentals. And while emulating games is easier now I have a feeling everything will come crashing down once digital ids get implemented everywhere

Do you imagine that being passionate and caring about your hobbies somehow locks you out of life stuff?

Let's see what all I do in life because even tho I know this is the default go-to internet insult

I also have a youtube channel I make videos on when I have time
https://www.youtube.com/@GamingPalOllie/videos

My latest video was a review on ZPF for SEGA Mega Drive/Steam and Switch

And I'm where I'm at in life thanks to my passion for gaming

so I don't see what what I do in life has anything to do with this topic

why are you putting your own hobby down?
why is it wrong to be passionate about gaming? Are you embarrassed of your hobbies?

And yet you still choose to spend your limited time on this planet getting mad at idiots for being idiots. How tragic.

No, I'm not embarrassed about being into video games. I just find caring about other people's opinions this much to be a total waste of time and energy I'd rather spend actually playing video games.

It's true that gaming is more mainstream today than ever, and with that comes the "casuals". Honestly, i have no problem with people exploring only the surface level of something, as long as they don't claim to be specialists on the matter just cause they saw a 1 hour video essay about gaming. If they enjoy playing a game on 16:9, so be it. It's their experience, not mine.

I'd even dare saying that said essays shouldn't be that long either.

So no matter what I say you're going to twist it to suit your needs, pathetic.

But they might not enjoy it, they might simply not know better
why is it so wrong to just say it, then leave it to the person to decide if they want to use 4:3 or not? People literally don't know what they don't know in many cases and can't even see it until you point it out.

I don't mind people being ignorant of Video Game history as a whole, but I've had to chide coworkers in the past who've tried to throw out boxed NES consoles and games before because they didn't know what they were

Well... Ok.

But only because you asked nicely ;)!

I've been gaming for 40 years of my 45 on this planet, since Mom bought a deeply discounted Atari 2600 from the Sears catalogue for the family. I may correct uninformed statements now and then, but by and large do not engage with it or care. Certainly do not stick around and keep arguing if people take offense to me doing it. I was on the receiving end of completely unjustified gatekeeping attempts constantly my whole life, so I'm not quick to make attempts to gatekeep others myself.

On the subject of labels like "tourist", I was just being labelled as that and a "poser" by a person born in 2005 on the Steam forum for Fatal Frame 2 Remake recently because I mocked him for being upset that the Remake slightly modernized the character costumes, so Mio had no cleavage for them to see, and Mayu was wearing boyshorts under her skirt. (these characters are canonically 15 during the events of this game for reference!)

He was also mad the unlockable bikini costumes from later releases after the PS2 version were not included. I, a person who stood in line on launch day at Babbages of Fatal Frame 2 PS2 with a pre-sell receipt, was called a "tourist" and "poser" for pointing out how silly he was being and that none of that mattered at all in the PS2 release because it was one of the greatest survival horror games ever made, the atmosphere and story made that game the legend it is.

Called those things by a young man barely out of childhood who wasn't even born yet when the version of the game the Remake was based on came out, who felt the need to try to do all that because I'm a woman. No other reason. Same dumb shit I've dealt with for forty years. So yeah, I really can't be bothered more times than not because I've been on the other end of gatekeeping. I'm sure you probably think your gatekeeping is good gatekeeping, but I know they all thought theirs was as well.

Out there outside of gamer circles where people like the ones here are generally knowledgeable I take the Keanu philosophy.

The best way to live life. You won't change the mind of the "intellectuals", so why stress about it?

reading a book doesn't meant you understand it, same for games

You're an ageist
Art is not just an author imagination but snapshot of space/time he lives. It's not just about story but all the elements author include in his work, consciously and unconsciously. By editing art you destroy it value. If you okay with art being destroyed you don't care about art.

A whole lot of people getting way too angry over finding out that everybody else doesn't do things exactly the same way as they do.

Well, it's out of your control, and no amount of spiking your blood pressure and getting your cortisol levels stressed is going to change that.

Oh no, I don't have a PVM and a SCART-JP21 converter! I'm heckin' doin' gamer crimes!

You wanna talk shit, "levels" and "tiers"? Back when everyone and their grandma got an NES off eBay or whatever, there was a site that had a tutorial on how to make it region-free by maiming the Nin10 chip found within (and it still amuses me how that's all the protection Nintendo thought they'd ever need — sweet summer children) and people went fucking bananas over it, arguing over the most meaningless shit and shaming others for not - and I want to make this exceedingly clear - cutting a chip "the right away". This went on a few weeks.

That's the day I learned that the AVGN wasn't such a funny character, but an accurate parody of reality (except that many failed to be ironic and/or clever while they were at it).

Debatebros never lose a debate like bad drivers never miss a turn. Best to pump the brakes and let them wreck into someone else.

Kinda still want a Nintoaster. (so when are those avgn 8-bit carts shipping out again?)

I'm sorry but I don't get your point about "understanding"... You mean recognising the characters and being able to retell the plot from mind? Unless someone rushes through the pages I'm pretty sure that most understand what they're reading (unless it's advanced mathematics without prior knowledge of irrational and imaginary numbers).

Same with video games: if you understand the mechanics and its plot I don't see why someone cannot understand it either.

Unless you're meaning something else.

You're an ageist.
Sorry but how? Also I think that calling someone who was fan of a franchise before they were born a "poser" is a bit presumptuous...

The thing is that video games are the conjunction of various people's effort (for most cases) than just one's and while the whole "are games art" debate is an entirely different subject I'd also argue that it's also a product you've spent money for and modding is a form of editing yet people don't "destroy its value" just because they're playing a modified version of said game.

I'd also argue that there's the "death of the author" thing to take into account and the private/personal life of said artist shouldn't be the only thing defining said video game (or any other media for that matter).

"No you posers just do not get it. Being able to see a 15 year old girls cleavage and her sisters panties was an incredibly critical factor in what made the original release one of the greatest survival horror games of all time!"
-the art appreciator

On that particular subject with that game, trust me. It's not about art for that person. It's about gooners gooning. That crowd absolutely doesn't care about art.

Any time somebody complains about censorship like that, I just zone out because it's the most boring, unnecessary and lame thing to ever talk about.

steam discussions boards are always just like that though, but in general ive seen in on a lot of Koei Temco games about people upset not being able to ogle teenage girls panties in releases (in things like Atelier & Blue Reflection), like if actual meaningful game content was being censored or removed yeah id be on the same side, its just weird their obession with this stuff

You know it's bad when there's this exact complain even on the new Pragmata game. Yes, they talking about the little android girl

it's not the same thing
there's nothing wrong with telling someone that they could be playing a game in 4:3 and if they're emulating there's nothing wrong with telling them to use CRT Shaders or at least turn off that awful bilinear filtering that makes everything look like ass.

why are you so against us just discussing gaming and sharing ways to make retro games look better or suggesting people get off the generic games and broaden their horizones? that's what gaming is all about, discovery

I mean if you remember Babbages, you're old
but you can still be a tourist. Tho in this case no, you are not.

However we don't all feel "old" or "at that age" about stuff, I'm 42 and I'm as passionate about gaming as when I was 22 and I still feel the same need to correct people or argue about collectors and scammers in my local scene.
I'm not going to stand by and watch as the Macedonian Retro Game Mafia scams people out of their money for shitty custom made arcades and how they gobble up everything and anything they find for dirt cheap just to resell abroad or hoard for themselves without ever knowing anything about the games they keep hoarding.

Losing that passion, that's what frightens me most, granted I too sometimes walk away from a pointless argument but I've always done that from time to time.

I've also been on the recieving end of major gatekeeping
IN FACT I stepped down as an admin of the Gaming tag on LUElinks...back when tags were a serious thing and people cared about them, because people were giving me shit for playing games on Easy.
Both GameFAQs and LUElinks users would seriously obsess over this for a while and give me a hard time over it, but I fought them on it.
I have my own way of approaching gaming and I'd be damned if I don't defend it or stand by it.

THIS is me

I'd fight you if you give me a hard time over this

but I will also fight you if all you play is GTA, AAAs, Call of Duty and FIFA or Fortnite and the like and dare to call yourself a gamer while knowing jack all about gaming outside of that filth.

If I lose this passion, something isn't right with me
